Diapering a Newborn? Sold on Pockets!

When I first started looking into cloth diapering my son, I wanted the easiest way to go.. Prefolds and Snappis frightened me at first; I didn’t think I would stick with it if I went that route. So I started out with pocket; my first diapers were FuzziBunz pockets, bumGenius pockets, Haute Pockets, and Starbunz diapers. I wanted diapers that would be daddy and grandparent friendly so I wouldn’t have to be the only one changing diapers. Pockets fit that perfectly and I was sold!

When my son came along I was over the moon to put him in cloth and see that fluffy little bum! All 7lbs 11oz of him fit into the diapers that I had, which I was thrilled about! It was pretty easy to just snap or Velcro the diaper on. I wanted the easiest way possible, even more so in those days of no sleep, and it looked so easy to just put the insert in the pocket. Daddy was sold on the diapers after that first diaper change and seeing how easy it was. Once he also saw how much money we were saving not having to run to the store to buy diapers like we did with our first son, he wished we would have cloth diapered from day one!

After a little while, I got more willing to branch out to other diapers, I added some fitted diapers into my stash, which worked great for around the house when I wanted his little bum to get some air, I would just leave him coverless unless we were going out.

Even now that he is almost 4 months old, we’re still figuring out what we like and don’t like and trying different types of diapers. Starting out with the pockets for him as a newborn really was my best choice; they made cloth diapers seem so easy and got me hooked! I also had so much fun seeing his little bum in all the cute diapers, they really are as easy as disposables.

I think with CD'ing we will ALWAYS be figuring out what we like best even if we have ones that we love already! Its all part of the addiction! :)

I love that picture! =)

We switched to cloth when my son was 3 months old, and I wondered if the pockets we bought him would work on our next child as a newborn. I've got hope they will! Thank you for sharing your story.

That is such a cute picture! I didn't start my son on cloth until he was about 6 weeks old. I didn't think it would fit him...seemed like my BG's would cover his head! You proved me wrong! Just think... I could have has 6 more weeks of cloth!

My son is 4 months old and he's the first of our three kids that we've CD'ed. Like you, we wish we had used cloth on our other kids. It seemed intimidating to me back then, but now I'm a total convert and shudder at the idea of disposables! lol

I started cloth diapering when our daughter was 20 months and now our next baby is coming in 5 months. I'm glad to hear that another mom enjoys the pocket diapers with her newborn because that is what I already have! lol

I like pockets too, but we like prefolds for newborns. Especially b/c it's too expensive for us to buy sized pockets.

It's encouraging to hear that pockets worked well on a newborn. I was figuring I'd have to come up with something different for my next one. I've never cloth-diapered a newborn before.

It's great to hear about newborns. I'm working with that right now. I tend to have leaks with the pockets at nights, maybe because he's a heavy wetter - maybe because he's a newborn. My daughter (I started her at six months) never had leaks with the pockets. Hmmm!
We're using prefolds and a cover.. I hate snappi's. I thought I would like them and now he's a month old I'm still not liking them. Pockets are my favorite.s

This is 100% correct! I'd used only disposables on my now 5yr old because we didn't have access to a washing machine at our old place. We moved house, had a new baby and we started using cloth gradually by using AIOs - BumGenius and FuzziBunz. I tried prefolds and covers, but they're not right for us, and now we're adding some fitted diapers with fleece and wool covers. You have to start out with what's easiest and work your way into it. :)

Since I started using cloth with my 8-month old, I'm really curious about using cloth when the next one comes along (whenever that is). I'm hoping to have a better stash by then, but I'm glad to read that pockets worked well for your little one!

Good Good Good to know! I am a little nervous about doing cloth with our next one, as I"ve never cloth diapered a newborn before.

JennBergerBrown: When you use fitted diapers without a cover - you just have to be more attentive to when your little one goes potty. I used fitted diapers quite regularly without covers - and most of the time, since the Kiwi Pie fitted diapers are so absorbent they only ever feel damp to the touch when my little guy goes potty. Of course I change him rather frequently - usually every 2.5 - 3 hours - so it's never a big issue. We've never had him leak or get things wet while going coverless with a fitted diaper on!

I hope this helps!

That picture is adorable :D I have not tried cd'ing a newborn yet. My brother in law will be having his firstborn soon and he will be trying out the fuzzi bunz. We'll see how it works!!

We started off with BG OS pockets as well! We loved them!! That is all we have used, and now she is 4 months old. We are just buying some Smartipants OS to try those out too!

That diaper does look so cute on your little guy! I know everyone has their different preferences, but I wish prefolds didn't have to be so scary- maybe I need to write an article about how I love my prefolds. I don't want people on a really tight budget to be scared off from cloth diapering.

Good for you! I wish our daughter had either fit her one-size and small diapers from day one or we had realized how long it would take for her to grow into them. After four (gasp!) packs of newborn sposies, we finally went and bought her newborn size covers. Think how many cloth diapers that could have bought, lol.

I am so impressed that you could get your diaper on the 7lb baby! I had so many issues when my son was little. His legs were just to skinny!

I really appreciate this post because we want to have another baby and wondered about the best way to cloth diaper a newborn. We use prefolds with our 18 month old and it works fine for him, but like you, not sure I'd want to do with with a newborn.

Hannah- I'm with you on the prefolds! Although I will confess that they're actually EASIER on infants than on toddlers! My DD hates having to wait while I Snappi her up and add a cover! She much prefers pockets!

Upstatemamma said...

I am so jealous of all you mamas who cloth diapered your infants - I did not come to cloth until three months. :(

Arizona Girl said...

We started with the infant pre-folds, often I would double diaper. We also used disposables until he was past the black poop stage. For some reason I thought that being that small, he wouldn't fit into the one-size diapers I had purchased. I had a few first-stage diapers that when I finally got brave enough to use they were almost too small. -the things you wish you did different, now I know for the next baby, and I'm still learning with my 5 month old too.

i agree with upstatemom--we didn't start CD until my LO was 4 months. so i've been very curious about CDing a newborn! glad to see the pockets fit fine. does anyone have info on how the pockets do on not irritating the belly button? i love kiwipie and kissaluvs fitteds, and if i have another baby, i might buy a stash of those to use in the early months! thanks for the information and encouragement! --camille
