I hear this from mom’s all the time, at Twitter parties, on Facebook, and even in the comments of The Cloth Diaper Whisperer: “I really wish I could buy more cloth diapers, but we just don’t have the money.” Maybe it’s because they want to get started in cloth. Maybe it’s because they want to wash less frequently. Maybe it’s they are just addicted to the cuteness and NEED more! Whatever the reasons for wanting to buy more cloth, finances can have a serious impact on the size of your stash. As a full-time college student, I know as well as anyone how tight a budget can get. But after a few months navigating the cloth diapering world, and drooling over everything I wanted to buy, I’ve found a few tips and tricks to grow my stash and still pay the bills.

My first trick is to expand your stash with prefolds. Even if you prefer pockets diapers or All-In-Ones, prefolds work great around the house, when you have more room for diaper changes and can slack on the convenience factor somewhat. Then your pockets or AIOs are available for going out and about. If you have an older baby you can just fold the prefold in thirds and lay it in the cover. (I prefer Thirsties Duo Wrap Diaper Covers.) If you have a smaller baby, you will want to use something to fasten the prefold around the baby to prevent leaks onto the cover. Diaper pins are very cost effective, but some parents prefer not to use them. Snappis are T-shaped fasteners with teeth that hold the prefold on the baby. They are not quite as cost-effective as pins, but still a very good option for families on a budget that prefer not to use pins.

Next stash-growing strategy: sacrifice. This one should be somewhat self-explanatory. You have to give up some things to get things that are more important. It’s all about priorities. For me, my sacrifice is my morning bagel before class. A bagel at the bakery I frequent is about $2.30 with cream cheese. When I get a bagel there, I must have a smoothie, which is about $4. Yes, it is outrageous, but it is SOO good! This breakfast ends up being about $7 with tax. I usually got a bagel & smoothie 1 morning a week. When I cut it down to only on test days (about once a month) it saved me about $21 a month! There is one OS pocket diaper (my diaper of choice) a month right there! This same principle could be applied to whatever you like: brew your own morning coffee, eat out less, or don’t buy that pair of shoes you “just have to have.” Your baby’s bottom will thank you!

My last tip is to use the Kelly’s Closet coupon codes! My favorites are the free one-size diaper coupons. Usually the minimum purchase for these is only $25! So buy the diaper you have sacrificed for, and grab a free one too! To get an email with all the new coupon codes, subscribe to the Kelly’s Closet Newsletter.

I hope this post helps you realize a small budget doesn’t have to mean a small stash! There are many ways to expand your fluff inventory without taking out a second  mortgage!

Feeding the Addiction & Paying the Bills

We live in a disposable world.  Americans regularly dispose of over 4 pounds of trash per person per day.  Many parents choose cloth diapers over disposables so that they can personally reduce their impact on our disposable society.  While cloth diapering parents want to avoid using disposable diapers there are still occasions where using disposables seems like the only viable option. 

Some common reasons that cloth diapering parents use disposable diapers include:
  • Traveling
  • Sickness – diarrhea, yeast infection, or severe diaper rash
  • Childcare provider not willing to use or accept cloth diapers
  • Relatives or friends not willing to use or accept cloth diapers

ENVIRONMENT:  Are hybrid systems any better for the environment compared to disposables?
  • Both the Flip and GroVia disposable inserts are much smaller in size than disposables creating less waste by volume than disposable diapers. 
  • Both Flip and GroVia disposable inserts contain only 3 grams of SAP compared to 10-20 in traditional disposable diapers which makes them a healthier option for your baby compared to disposable diapers.
  • Since the Flip and GroVia are meant to be used inside a diaper cover or shell they don’t need any ink to decorate the outside of the diapers like with disposables.
  • They also don’t need Velcro on each disposable insert since they are placed inside a reusable shell or cover.  
  • Flip inserts are made using a bamboo viscose, wood pulp filler, and starch-based glues (all better than plastic based products used in other disposable diapers)
  • GroVia are both biodegradable and compostable (see notes below).
  • GroVia are fragrance free, dye free, plastic free and chlorine free.
  • Both are made by cloth diaper companies whose primary mission is to get more babies in cloth diapers.
COST:  Are hybrids more expensive than disposables?  It all depends on which disposable you are comparing them to.  For our cruise I selected the Huggies Pure & Natural diaper which cost me $19.99 for 56 size 4’s at the local big box retailer.  This equates to a cost of $0.3569 per diaper.  Compared to the per diaper price of Flip at $0.275 each and the GroVia Biosoakers at $0.3995.  Flip disposable inserts clearly win over disposables if price alone is a factor.

SPACE:  If you are traveling and space is limited the hybrid systems are hands down the best option.  You can see here the difference between the sizes of each insert.   The GroVia Biosoakers are actually the smallest of them all. 

FIT:  Using disposable diapers for a week made me realize how badly they fit a baby.  Disposables fit poorly around the legs and waists and are more likely to leak than a cloth diaper.  The GroVia BioSoakers are a much better fitting insert and include an inner leg gusset and protective layer unlike the Flip.  However, both the Flip and GroVia liners are used with an outer shell or cover which will actually add an extra layer of protection from leaks.  Since they both use an outer shell they are truly a better fit than disposable diapers. 

COMPOSTING AND BIODEGRADABILITY:  GroVia markets their disposable inserts to be compostable and biodegradable (under certain conditions).  Be sure to educate yourself on the conditions that would be required to compost and degrade naturally.

My final thoughts on hybrids and disposables:  I think that parents (especially mothers) have enough stresses in their lives that if they choose to use a disposable diaper or disposable insert they shouldn’t feel like a bad parent.  With that being said I also think that if a parent feels strongly about using cloth diapers 100% of the time that there is a way to use cloth diapers in every situation.  Only you know your boundaries and limits. 

If you are faced with deciding between a hybrid system (like the Flip and GroVia) and a disposable diaper the hybrid systems are better for the environment, better for your babies health, and better for your wallet.  The differences may not be as significant as when you use cloth diapers but every little bit helps.  I also think that hybrid systems are a great option for those parents who are unsure if they are ready to make the commitment to cloth diapers.

On Tuesday, October 26th over 400 of your closest friends and cloth diaper users addicts met on Twitter for a spooky Halloween celebration - #FluffNTreat!  We’re all just big kids and really enjoy Trick-or-Treating so DiaperShops decided to fill our treat bags with lots of fluff and other exciting cloth diapering accessories and baby products.  The good thing about these treats is that they won’t add an extra inch to our waistlines like that bag of candy that’s sitting on my counter from Halloween night.

I know many of the party attendees ended up in jail but so did @EcoChicParties and @RockinGreenSoap.

Eco Chic Parties is back from a few weeks vacation with a good cause – fundraising for the Real Diapers Association (RDA).

This Thursday evening (9pm ET) we will join the RDA in a fundraising twitter party to help them reach their goal of $3500 in 35 days.

Who is the Real Diaper Association? The RDA is a non-profit organization that plays a leading role in the cloth diaper movement, training and supporting grassroots advocates to lead local Real Diaper Circles, compiling and distributing research on the subject, working with the media and other businesses and organizations to increase awareness about cloth diapers, and providing direct reliable, unbiased support for consumers. They do all of this with the support of their member donors.

The RDA is celebrating their 6th anniversary on August 11th and is hoping to continue to employee their Executive Director; which has accomplished a lot over the past year in this position. Explore the archives of their blog at www.realdiaperevents.org for stories about some of their most recent accomplishments, such as:

•the launch of a cloth-diaper-friendly daycare directory and publication of a tip sheet on using cloth diapers in daycare ,
•a blog carnival focused on Real Diaper Facts that highlighted some of the most useful research out there on the benefits of cloth diapers, and
•the ongoing 100% reusable cloth diapers campaign to support people and choosing and using real diapers in any situation.
Additionally, there are 15 active Real Diaper Circles and nearly 100 volunteers in training to become Leaders across the U.S. and Canada.

In order to accomplish even more this coming year the RDA needs to continue to fund the Executive Director position and ensure that we have someone in place to push all their efforts forward.

This is the time for cloth diapers for a number of great reasons. We have all been supportive in individual advocacy, spreading the message time and again to our friends and acquaintances. By joining together we can become a bigger voice and make a larger impact.

1. Become a member of the Real Diaper Association today at www.realdiaperassociation.org/directory/signup.php. Individual membership is only $25 a year – that’s less than 0.06 cents a day to help this worth organization.

2. Contribute to the RDA’s Keep Our Executive Director – $3500 in 35 Days campaign on Razoo. http://www.razoo.com/story/Keep-Our-Executive-Director-1 Donations can be as little as $1.00 – every little bit will help.
