Fluff Friday 143
When I was pregnant and it was decided that I should leave my job to stay home with our children, I was looking for ways to reduce expenses. It didn't take me long to realize that cloth diapers could play a major role in that equation. I will admit that I spent months reading and looking at pictures and trying to figure out what all of the diapering terms meant before I took a huge leap and actually ordered some. Disposables were fine for us with my older daughter and I'm not exactly a fan of laundry, so I was really having to wrap my head around the idea of washing diapers...and their contents. I kept referencing the Excel spreadsheet that I'd made, reassuring myself that the cost savings would be worth it.My sweet husband was on board from the beginning and actually mentioned it to one of his coworkers whose wife was pregnant with their second baby. The coworker raved about their bumGenius diapers, so that was my first purchase. When they arrived, I was in love with how cute they were and how soft they felt – I was delighted at the thought of putting something so gentle against my baby's skin.
The more I read, the more I realized that I would probably need some newborn sized diapers. I ordered Rumparooz Lil' Joeys (love the darling whale print!), XS FuzziBunz and Kissaluvs Fitteds in size zeros, plus four covers. My husband, eight year old daughter and I spent a morning diapering one of her stuffed bunnies, practicing with the snaps and trying out the different styles of covers. I also bought several dozen inexpensive white washcloths to use as cloth wipes in a Prince Lionheart wipes warmer.
After Noah was born, the first cloth diaper we used was the Lil' Joey and I was hooked. His behind was so fluffy and cute, and I never worried about the cost of diapers when he'd go through three or four in a row during one changing – I just laughed and figured on an extra load of laundry that day! Once I caught myself running low on cloth diapers and did a quick count as I loaded the washer to figure out exactly how many we'd been through that day: nineteen diapers and twenty wipes. Referencing my spreadsheet, which used the cost of the least expensive store brand, that day's changes would have cost me about $3.50 and used a quarter of a package of disposables.
The Kissaluvs fitteds with a cover has worked the best for us, especially at night. Our heavy wetter would soak through microfiber inserts and then not only would we be changing him, but we'd be changing the bed, too! Plus, it was nice to use the same diaper all the time at night so we weren't trying to figure out different configurations of closures while totally exhausted. Since Noah was born at 8lb 2.7oz and 22.5", it wasn't long until he outgrew the Lil Joeys, but I was glad to have them since the inner gussets really held in the newborn stool. Along the way, I added a couple of Applecheeks in size one, and the super-absorbent bamboo inserts made for a great overnight diaper.
One of the best things that happened was when a mom commented on how cute Noah's diaper was, and how disposables had come a long way! I explained that it wasn't a disposable, it was a cloth diaper, and it sparked a great discussion about how easy cloth was with a group of moms as we waited to pick up our older children (By the way, the cute diaper was a Bummis Super Whisper Wrap cover with the red rocket print.)
My precious Noah is now six weeks old and I feel like we've gotten in a groove with cloth diapering. We only carry cloth in our diaper bag and made our first out-of-town trip with cloth when we drove five hours to my parents' house. We've experimented with some different washing routines and installed a clothesline to take advantage of the bright Texas sun. We're certainly not experts – I've called the helpful ladies at Kelly's twice now with questions! – but we're confident in our ability to effectively cloth diaper and in the knowledge that this is saving our family money.

The First Six Weeks
After a little bit of research and some strategic planning, I decided that I would attempt a hybrid cloth diapering approach. For the daytime car trip, I purchased a package of FLIP disposable inserts to use in the FLIP covers that I already own. I was pleasantly surprised by how affordable they were! I layered two FLIP disposable inserts into my cover and hoped for the best. 240 miles and four hours later, we stopped for lunch - I hadn’t heard a peep from the rear-facing carseat in ages. I grabbed my diaper bag with additional FLIP inserts, a Fuzzibunz pocket diaper (just in case his bum was looking red), some Kissaluvs diaper changing spray, and headed into the (surprisingly clean) restroom.
The FLIP disposable inserts were a total success. They were wet, but his bum was not red, the FLIP cover didn’t leak, and he was not at all uncomfortable. We decided to give a double disposable FLIP insert another try for the next leg of the trip. I switched out covers and decided to use a Bummis cover (the bright yellow one in the background of the photo up top). I felt like I could rest a little easier now that the disposable inserts had passed the first big test!When we arrived at our first hotel for the night, I wanted to stick with our regular nighttime routine: a Bum Genius pocket diaper stuffed with a regular insert plus a hemp insert, lined with a disposable Bummis liner, covered with wool - usually a Kissaluvs cover or longies my mom made. Although I wouldn’t have access to a washer for another day, I grabbed the plastic “laundry bag” from the hotel room closet and turned that into my mini travel diaper bag (yup, totally forgot the wet bag!). Back in the car the next day and back on the road, I only put a single FLIP disposable insert into his cover because our road time was only scheduled to be two hours before we reached our next destination - New York City! The singly insert was also a success. No complaints and we all arrived happily at our hotel.
After we checked into our second hotel, I went back to my normal daytime cloth routine knowing that I was about 24 hours away from the use of a washing machine at my mom’s house! (Such a nice feeling.) I used about a 1/2 days worth of my regular mix and match cloth diaper approach - an all-in-one, a fitted with a cover, a pocket... I can’t commit! All of these diapers were tossed into our de facto diaper laundry bag, ready for the big washer at Mimi’s house! Using Bummis disposable liners helped keep the mess to a minimum while we were out of our element.Back on the road the next day, we were back to our road-friendly double layer of disposable FLIP inserts and a cute cover. Knowing that we had about five hours of driving from New York to Boston, I also put a pair of fleece pants on - they seem to help with any leaking issues. (I certainly didn’t want to be dealing with a wet carseat.) Finally arriving at Mimi’s house, I made a quick dash for the laundry room and dumped all the diapers in for a good soak in cold water. For the rest of the time at my mom’s house, we were able to continue our regular routine and I wasn’t at all hesitant about using the disposable inserts for our long trip back to Charlotte at the end of the week. Having a cloth diaper travel system in place really helps me to know that I have one less thing to worry about on my next trip!

Fluff Friday 131 WINNER!
Saying that anyone can cloth diaper by using flats and hand washing the diapers is one thing, doing it is another. I’ve collected all of the things that I think I am going to need for the Flats Challenge.
First off, birdseye flat diapers:
I am using twelve Swaddlebees flats and six OsoCozy unbleached flats. I bought the Swaddlebees because I am a sucker for prints, even if they are going to end up under a diaper cover. To add extra absorbency for naps and overnight, I am going to use the OsoCozy flats pad folded as doublers since they are a little bit smaller than the Swaddlebees.
Next up the covers:
I have no shortage of covers but since I had to choose just five, I wanted the ones that have proven to work the best. I am choosing a Bummis Super Brite wrap, a Thirsties Cover, a Kissaluvs kissa’s one size cover, a Blueberry one size, and a Hiney Liney Versa cover. The Hiney Liney is my wildcard cover. I just recently found out about them and bought a cover specifically for the flats challenge.
Hand Washing
I really love the idea of the camp washer so I ran out and bought all of the supplies to make it. A friend was even able to find me a plunger at the Dollar Store, thus making it even less expensive to make the camp washer. Once it was made, I did some test runs with mediocre success. The rubber plunger has such a strong smell, I couldn’t figure out if I was getting the diapers clean. Somehow I can’t tell the difference between the smell of ammonia and the smell of cheap rubber. So I have decided to do a cold rinse in the camp washer, dump the water, add hot water, agitate the diapers with Rockin’ Green in the camp washer using the smelly plunger and then do all of my final rinsing in a basin in the kitchen sink. I’m rinsing in the sink to make sure that all of the soap is out and also to rinse off the smell of the plunger. Since my hands are going to end up touching very hot water (we have our hot water heater set dangerously high) and freezing cold water, I am using my Blue Meanies. (My fancy dishwashing gloves that I registered for when we got married and never used).
Once washed and rinsed, the diapers are going on to my drying rack. I just have a simple drying rack from Target so the diapers don’t fit perfectly. I need to use backs of chairs, towel bars and the dishwasher and oven handles for additional space. There will be diapers all over my kitchen while they are drying.
Strategy
I plan on washing the diapers every other night after the kids go to bed. This will leave enough time for the diapers to dry before they wake up in the morning. Some of the diapers on the inside of the drying rack are still going to be damp by morning, so I am just going to put the whole drying rack on my kitchen island until they are dry.
Extra Credit
The extra fun and excitement portion of the flats challenge is that we are traveling from Boston to Philadelphia for Memorial Day weekend to visit a friend. So we will be traveling with flats and washing somewhere else. I think I will have to boil water to use in the camp washer outside and rinse the diapers outside with a hose while we are visiting because I don’t want our hosts to feel uncomfortable that dirty diaper water would end up anywhere in their home.

Fluff Friday 131
I originally started cloth diapering because a friend of mine cloth diapers her little girl and I loved the idea of saving the environment, money, and my little ones bum from chemicals:) I quickly became addicted to all of the different styles and accessories that go along with cloth diapering. My main diaper is a Fuzzibunz perfect size but I've fed my addiction and expanded my collection to include Grovia, Kissaluvs fitted, Thirsties duo diapers, fab fitted, and duo wraps, hemp prefolds, and stay dry duo inserts. I LOVE my fuzzibunz hanging dry bag because it unzips at the bottom so it does not fill with water during washing. I also love my Budda Bunz wool dryer balls because they really speed up the drying time in the winter when I dry in the dryer.
In the summer time I love to hang dry my diapers and I get so excited to just smell everyone as I take them down because they smell sooooooooo good:) I never thought I would use cloth wipes but I LOVE using those too and it's so much easier than I thought it would be. My favorite are grovia. I also make my own cloth wipes solution. I use Honey Bun Drops Cloth Diaper Wipes Solution and I just love the oatmeal and shea butter scent. Yummy! My baby's bottom is so soft and free of any diaper rash!!!! I never felt the need for a diaper sprayer. I use grovia flushable liners instead when I know we are going to have a dirty diaper and I just take out the liner and flush it! It's fabulous! I am always looking at new goodies and new diapers to try to add to my collection DAILY and I just flip when my fluff arrives in the mail:) I don't know why everyone doesn't use cloth diapers. I love cloth diapering!!!!

My Name is Kathy and I'm addicted to cloth
I started interviewing daycare providers for Baby #3 while I was still pregnant, but I didn’t have to look long. I was thrilled to find a daycare provider who was perfect for us: a family friend who cared for two infants in her home. She was just the kind of loving person I wanted to care for my child. When I asked about cloth, she told me she was already using cloth with one of her babies and was happy to use it for our baby, too. “I won’t wash them, but I’m happy to use them!” I started planning my new stash, and when Sam arrived, stocked up on a variety of pocket diapers, mostly one-sized. I knew he would be our last baby, so I decided OS would be the best value for us. I bought extra wipes and a zippered wetbag and we were ready to roll when I returned to part-time work when Sam was about three months old.
The transition to daycare went smoothly (at least as far as diapers go). There was a learning curve for all of us, since I had never used cloth with a daycare provider (and since things had changed, mostly for the better, in six years!). At first we had some leaking issues, but that was largely due to having to figure out exactly which snap settings Sam needed on each diaper. I had shopped sales so we had a variety of styles, a mixture of applix and snap diapers. Our daycare provider preferred the Velcro ones (“it’s easier to get a good fit on him, although they all work well”), but I had preferred snaps when cloth diapering my second child.
Cloth diapering Sam at daycare was a success. If I were doing it over (and buying a stash designed for daycare), I would buy applix diapers in one style only. That said, our daycare provider didn’t mind using the snap diapers, although the variety of snap placements did make things confusing from time to time. A simpler stash would have helped with that. With my second child, I had a completely eclectic stash and I loved it—fitteds, wool, pockets. Needing to wash and stuff diapers at night (often late) made simplicity more appealing this time around. But we have been happy to be able to use cloth diapers round-the-clock with Sam—we haven’t needed to buy disposables at all!

Diapering At Daycare
My daughter was born six years later, and I knew I would start with cloth right away. She first wore Kissaluvs size 0’s with Thirsties covers, and then when she was about two months old, I switched to FuzziBunz smalls and BumGenius. When she was about three months old, I went back to work. I was using a different home-based care provider this time around, and I approached her about using cloth diapers. I brought along a FuzziBunz and wet bag to show her how it would work, and after seeing how simple the cloth diapers were, she readily agreed that using cloth diapers would be just fine. It’s no more work to change a pre-stuffed pocket diaper than a disposable one—the main issue was keeping all of the used diapers in a wet bag. Every day when I take my daughter to the sitter’s house, I bring along 4 pre-stuffed pocket diapers, 4 moist cloth wipes (in a disposable travel holder), and a small wet bag. The diaper bag also contains some Grandma El’s diaper cream, and a few disposable diapers and wipes in case of an emergency. For my cloth wipes solution, I use 10 oz. of water, 20 drops of grapefruit seed extract (to prevent a musty smell), and a drop of baby soap. This system has worked out perfectly. When I get home from picking her up, I go through the wet bag and separate the diapers and inserts, spray the diapers off if necessary, and toss them in my large wet bag. I wash cloth diapers about every 2-3 days.

Before approaching my sitter, I did check the laws for day care homes. These may vary by state, but in Illinois, the code specifically mentions cloth diapers. According to the Licensing Standards for Day Care Homes, “A toilet shall be easily accessible so that the contents of reusable diapers may be disposed of before placing the diapers in the diaper pail. Disposable diapers and their contents shall be disposed of in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. “
My daughter Campbell is 8 months old now, and she’s been cloth diapered 99.5% of the time since the day we came home from the hospital. She’s only worn disposables a handful of times. She currently wears FuzziBunz size mediums and BumGenius. I wish I had kept better records of what I paid for the diapers I have and how much I’ve earned back by selling the ones we are no longer using, but if I had to guess I’d say we are currently getting close to the break-even point and from now on we will just be investing in detergent and water, assuming she is like my son and wears size medium through toddlerhood.
I am very thankful for my open-minded sitter who is willing to use cloth diapers. No only are we saving money, we are helping the environment, she has more natural fibers against her bottom, and she looks adorable!

Fluff Friday 119 WINNER!
For daytime use my son stayed completely leak-free in his Flips and Prefolds. He also stayed leak-free for naps with double stuffed FuzziBunz One-Size Pockets or pre-folds and a cover. It was with overnight use that I was constantly having a problem. It seemed no matter what I did my son would wake up wet the next morning. Early on I realized that my son was a heavy wetter so I ended up buying some Thirstie's Hemp Inserts as well as Thirstie's Fab doublers and figured I would try both to see which I liked better. However even with the addition of the hemp insert or the fab doubler my son was waking up damp. I even tried triple stuffing and using one microfiber insert, one fab doubler, and one hemp insert and he was STILL damp in the morning. Why was this happening? I seriously considered switching back to disposables at night as I was getting incredibly frustrated. I decided to do some research and I discovered two things:
1) If the inserts don't lay completely flat in the pocket then it can cause leaks as there is no where for the urine to go if there are bends in the insert. Basically the urine would just roll around on the PUL fabric until it found an escape route out of the diaper. No amount of extra inserts would stop this kind of leak if the inserts aren't lying flat. All I had to do was, once the diapers would stuff, I would stick my hand to the top of the diaper and smooth the inserts out as I moved my hand back out of the diaper.
2) Tucking the microfleece layer of the pocket back into the diaper if it is sticking out will also cause leaks. For the longest time I thought that I was supposed to be tucking the microfleece back in or it would cause leaks... turns out it was just the opposite. So, I started letting the microfleece stick out of the back of the diaper and VOILA! No more leaks!
Not-tucking the microfleece back into the diaper was the turning point for keeping the diapers leak free. As soon as I stopped tucking them the leaks stopped completely.
So, by making these adjustments to my nighttime diapering routine my son has been able to stay completely dry all through the night. Even after sleeping 10 to 13 hours straight!

Fluff Friday 119
When I tell people this, some ask me, "Aren't you overwhelmed by the thought of a newborn in cloth diapers? All that laundry?! Three kids to take care of, and cloth too?! And two kids in cloth diapers?! I am overwhelmed by just thinking about that! Are you sure you're not?"
I wasn’t sure. So, I did a lot of research and a lot of thinking in preparation for our newborn-in-cloth journey, and learned a lot. I must say, from what I've learned so far, they were right, I am overwhelmed!
I'm overwhelmed by how amazingly affordable cloth diapering a newborn can be! I was surprised to learn how much people loved "old-fashioned" prefolds for newborns. Sure, they were inexpensive, but don't you get what you pay for? (Personally, I never thought of them as cute, or convenient, but I decided to order some anyway. Have I mentioned I'm cheap?). When I got my Bummis Preemie size and Infant size unbleached prefolds, I actually loved watching them fluff up with each pre-wash. Prefolds may be the least expensive standard of cloth diapering, but they definitely aren't boring or cheap! You can customize your stash with the cutest covers to reuse through several changes...saving hundreds of dollars over disposables! Besides, these aren't your run-of-the-mill megastore prefolds, they are amazingly absorbent and luxuriously soft! I'm already in love with my affordable prefolds!
I'm overwhelmed by how easy cloth diapering a newborn will be! It never occurred to me that exclusively breastfed babies have water-soluble "dirties." No rinsing necessary, just toss in the wet bag or pail and wash! When I told my husband about this, he was actually excited too. "Wow, I guess it really is going to be just as easy," he said and nodded his approval, "Just toss them in with all the others? I like it!" It's not going to impact the laundry routine at all! In fact, even if you don't have another child in cloth diapers, the effort it takes to throw a dirty diaper in the laundry is equal to the effort it takes to throw a disposable in the trash (and buy more, and empty the bags, and take them down to the street, and buy more, and did I mention buy more?). Wait, it might actually be saving time and energy! So easy!
I'm also overwhelmed by the great options for using cloth with a newborn! For some reason, I assumed a smaller size meant a narrower selection of options. Larger diapers can be fully customized to each individual child's needs and the newborn sizes are no different...they are just smaller! There are pockets like XS Fuzzi Bunz and Happy Heiny's Minis that can be stuffed with just the right insert, All-in-Ones like XS BumGenius or Lil' Joeys for convenience, fitteds like Kissaluvs 0's and covers like Thirsties or Bummis to contain super-soakers and blow-outs, and everything in between! You know how I've handled having so many options? I've had so much fun stacking up all the different kinds of fluff! I imagine I'll like each for different circumstances. It's wonderful to have so many options!
Finally, I'm overwhelmed by the absolute cuteness of newborn cloth diapers! Did you know that no person (despite their feelings about cloth) can resist the adorable little fluffy bundle of a newborn cloth diaper?! I might have to keep a newborn around just so I don't have to part with them! (Kidding! I think). Those tiny cloth diapers are absolutely irresistible!
So there you have it. I will readily admit to everyone that I'm definitely overwhelmed by cloth diapering a newborn. I'm overwhelmed by the money we'll save, how easy it will be, the options I have, and how cute my itty-bitty newborn will be in his little cloth diapers!
I never thought I would be one to say that I’m actually excitedly looking forward to all the diaper changes having a newborn means. I have many diapers to try, in all sorts of fun colors and prints. Above everything else, cloth diapering a newborn is just overwhelming FUN! :)

Overwhelmed by Newborn Cloth Diapers
Gift Idea #1: Cloth Diaper Newborn Package … Help a new baby get a great start in cloth! I loved prefolds, snappis, and covers as my newborn cloth diaper of choice (Bummis has a newborn pack but you can put your own together as well), but I recently gave a mom friend a small stash of Kissaluvs fitted size 0s and a couple of cute covers from Thirsties. Rumparooz also has the cutest newborn diaper 2-pack – pocket diapers, super cute and intended for preemie to twelve pounds – great colors, great designs! You could also choose one or two diapers that the new baby can “grow into.” Do you have a favorite diaper for your little one? Share the love and introduce her to something that will come in handy down the road!
Gift Idea #2: Cloth Diaper Accessory Must-Haves … Buy one or buy an assortment. As a mom new to cloth diapering, I appreciated getting cloth diaper accessories that I didn’t know I needed until I saw them. One of my favorite cloth diaper accessories were diaper liners – I received stay-dry diaper liners made by Bumgenius as well as flushable diaper liners and fleece liners from Bummis. Diaper doublers were also a welcome gift – they came attached with a little note that they would probably come in handy at night. (And oh, how handy they have been!) Cloth wipes (some were even handmade!) and Kissaluvs Diaper Lotion Potion are another great combination. Large pail liners (you must have two) and small wet bags (3 will do) are practical gifts but they can also be fun if you choose fun colors and prints.
Gift Idea #3: Fluffy Gifts For Non-CD Moms … Just because your friend doesn’t plan to cloth diaper, that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge her in some fun, eco-friendly baby gifts. Mustela Physiobebe No-Rinse Wash is an amazing product to give your baby a little waterless bath. The laundry that you love for cloth diapers is also great for all of baby’s clothes and blankets – why not get the new mom some Charlie’s Laundry Soap or GroVia Tiny Bubbles phosphate free laundry detergent. Diaper rash creams such as CJ’s Butter or GroVia Magic Stick, are cloth diaper friendly but can be used by anyone. Organic cotton burp cloths, sleep sacks, or gorgeous bamboo muslin swaddle wraps from Aden & Anais are great gifts for all moms and their babies! Who knows, maybe your thoughtful gifts might inspire your friend to test out some cute cloth!
Gift Idea #4: The Fabulous Gift Card. Who doesn’t love getting a gift card?! The ability to pick and choose her own favorite diapers and accessories for a new bundle of joy is always a welcome gift!

Putting Together The Perfect (Fluffy) Baby Shower Gift
How Cloth Diapering Helped Me Think More Sustainably All Around My HouseSure, I love cloth diapers on my babies, but using cloth diapers and eliminating disposables has also helped me think about how I can reduce the use of other disposable products around my home. After making the switch completely to cloth for three of my little people, I was instantly amazed at how much less money I spent on disposables and how much less trash I was hauling out of the house on a daily basis. The little wheels started churning in my head... I know that there are many other ways that I could live with less and reduce my carbon footprint so I decided to start brainstorming some ways to reduce waste and help my family live more sustainably by using more cloth.
Babies: Cloth diapers really can't be beat in my opinion. However, once I started using cloth diapers, it seemed a little silly to be using disposable wipes. After a quick trip to the grocery store to purchase a small spray bottle and some rummaging through my cloth remnant basket, I had a new system to take the place of disposable wipes. In addition to homemade wipes, I also purchased a few Kissaluvs organic cloth wipes and found a few thin baby wash cloths at my local discount store. I filled my small spray bottle with nothing but distilled water and I also purchased some Kissaluvs Diaper Lotion Potion to be used as needed. In all honesty, I never missed disposable wipes again. The wipes stay folded in a top drawer in my changing table or get tucked in with my clean dipes in my diaper bag. When I wash my cloth diapers, the wipes get washed right along with them.
Big Kids: Once I saw how easy it was to replace disposable wipes with cloth wipes, I decided to replace all of our disposable napkins and paper towels. With four kids and two dogs, we seem to go through paper napkins and paper towels like water. And so I found myself back to the cloth remnant box and my local discount store... For starters, I decided to start sending my big kids to school with cloth napkins for lunch instead of having them bring paper napkins or use the paper napkins in the cafeteria. For cloth napkins, we just used fun cloth remnants cut into 9 x 9 squares with the edges serged. I also found a variety of cloth napkins for practically pennies in the clearance section of a local store - these napkins don't need to match a theme or a holiday - the funkier the better! The kids love grabbing a cloth napkin or two from our fun selection and sticking them in their lunch bag with their reusable food containers - waste not, want not - right? In the Kitchen: Obviously the beauty of disposable paper towels is the germ-free factor. I, like most people, do not love germs. However, do not fear cloth towels because you are worried about keeping your kitchen sanitary! I keep quite a supply of cloth towels at the ready and do not hesitate to toss any soiled towels into the laundry hamper (or at least in the general direction of the laundry hamper). I always start the day with clean towels at the ready. We use sponges less frequently, but did you know that your sponges can be tossed into the dishwasher when you clean your dishes? What a great and easy way to keep your sponges germ free!
In the Dining Room: If cloth napkins work in lunch boxes, they work even better at the dinner table. Why use cloth napkins just for company? I like to keep on the lookout for dinner napkins on sale at discount stores, bed and bath stores, and even yard sales. I never ever iron so I like to look for cloth napkins that are not 100% cotton so that I can toss them into the washing machine and my kids can pull them from the dryer and fold them - ready for the next meal. (Bonus: cloth napkins do not fall off your lap like a paper napkin does - live sustainably and encourage better manners!)
Around the House: Everything has a second life (or more!) in our house. Beat up t-shirts and boxer shorts from my husband's drawers get cut up for rags, single socks are the perfect size for kid-friendly dusting and cleaning projects, and we use worn pillowcases to neatly tuck away off season clothing for the next year or the next child who can use it. It was incredible to realize that we could make so many little changes around the house that help us save a lot of money and create a lot less trash. Next time you buy a case of paper towels - check out the price - aren't there better things you could do with that money? I am sure that we have room for improvement around our house, but I think we are off to a great start. Cloth: it's not just for babies anymore...

Cloth: It's Not Just For Babies
I am looking for some been-there-done-that advice. I am pregnant with my third baby, but only my second to be in cloth diapers. I started my daughter in cloth at about 4 months and feel as if I have tried just about everything under the sun when it comes to cloth diapers in the 16 months that she’s been in them. However, I’m anxious to get this new little one into cloth as soon as possible and the newborn cloth diaper thing is brand new to me. Therefore, I’m looking for some advice and input when it comes to your experience with newborn diapering. I’ll fill you in a bit on my preferences:
Kissaluv Size 0: The first bit of advice that I received was that the Kissaluv Size 0’s are wonderful for newborns, so I purchased a couple of those and a Thirsties cover. But I thought I just said I’m not a fan of fitteds? Exactly. These diapers are soooo super soft and adorable, but they seem like they will be so bulky with a cover on top of them. I am most skeptical about these, but wondering what moms’ experiences have been with just fitteds and no cover on a newborn? Is this possible or do they leak right through immediately?
Lil Joeys: It was love at first sight with these little beauties. So tiny, so soft, so adorable. I’m tempted to buy twenty of these and call it a day, but I’m not sure how long they will last being that they are so small. I’m also a little wary of AIO’s. I have had bad experiences with sewn-in AIO’s and odor retention.
Tot Bots Tiny Fit Easy Fit: This is another really cute diaper, slightly bigger than the Lil Joeys so I don’t think I’ll be using it immediately. Love, love, love the design of the AIO with the insert that comes out, but stays attached. The inside seems like it will be so soft against the little guy’s bottom.
Fuzzi Bunz X-Small: Fuzzi Bunz have been a staple in my cloth diaper stash since the beginning. Contrary to many other opinions, I find FB’s to run a little bulky, particularly in the rear and lower back area, but they are soft, leak-proof and wear well. Again, this one is slightly bigger so I think I’ll have to wait a little while to get it on him.
I would love to hear what other moms of newborns think of the purchases I’ve already made and/or what other diapers they think I might like for the very beginning. I’m also thinking of trying a Blueberry Mini Deluxe and have heard wonderful things about Flip Organic Cotton inserts so wondering if I might be willing to try those with a cover or in a smaller pocket??? What advice can you guys give me? Just as I was ready to shed my Newbie title I’m feeling lost all over again. I will keep an eye on the comments and thank you in advance for any and all suggestions!

- I definitely prefer pockets.
- Although I know so many others who really couldn’t care less, a huge bulky diaper on a little baby drives me insane. Obviously there’s no getting around it with a little 6-8 pounder, but I want to reduce the bulk as much as possible.
- I’m not a huge fan of fitteds and prefolds with covers, because of the convenience factor, as well as the aforementioned bulk.
- I love my Bum Genius, Fuzzi Bunz, Blueberry, and Smartipants diapers; they are all at the top of the list for me.

Newborn Diapering
I started my cloth diapering stash with a good cross-section of styles, fits and brands to determine what I liked and didn’t like about cloth diapering. I felt that even if I wasn’t crazy about any of the diapers I tried, I would at least have some direction as to what I liked and didn’t like and could then go from there to find “the perfect diaper.” However, in my experience thus far, there is no perfect diaper because your (and your child’s) cloth diapering needs change with each stage. I have found what I thought were the perfect diapers only to have something change with my daughter that sent me reaching for something different in my stash or a new purchase all together. Allow me to take you on my journey.I started with a Perfect Size Fuzzi Bunz, a Bum Genius 3.0, a Bum Genius Organic AIO and a Happy Heiny. From the very beginning the Bum Genius 3.0 was my absolute favorite. It was easy to use, didn’t leak and was trim and adorable. The Bum Genius Organic AIO worked well and was easy to use, but I didn’t like the fact that the moisture stayed close to my daughter’s young, tender skin. The Fuzzi Bunz was cute and didn’t leak, but seemed bulky and the Happy Heiny, though I really liked it, leaked often.
Fast forward about 6 months (my daughter was then about 10 months old), I had introduced some new diapers to the mix and shifted my go-to choices around a bit. The Bum Genius 3.0’s were still a heavy favorite. Fuzzi Bunz became her naptime diaper because they don’t leak and their inner lining is a soft fleece that just seemed like something I would want to be wrapped in while sleeping. Since my daughter was a bit older and a little more rough-and-tumble the moisture against her skin bothered me less so I really came to love the ease of use of the Bum Genius Organic AIO. I introduced a couple of Blueberry diapers with snaps which I loved because of their designs, fabrics and bulletproof wear, but I still really preferred aplix over snaps on a squirmy baby.
By the time my daughter was about 16 months things took a dramatic turn! She discovered the fun of aplix and diaper removal! Even with pants on over her diaper she would undo the aplix resulting in either the best case scenario of Mommy discovering a diaper peaking out at her ankles or the worst case of leaks and messes when I didn’t discover it soon enough. Thus began the search for any and all diapers with snaps. I added a Smartipants and a Kissaluvs Marvel AIO. At this point Bum Genius hadn’t come out yet with snaps and I was eagerly awaiting them! I sadly shelved my BG 3.0’s and relied solely on my snaps stash. I really like the trimness and functionality of the Smartipants and they have a great price point, but I would love more color options and prints. The Marvel AIO is a solid diaper, but it can be a little bulky in the rear and, though minor, I just don’t like the tag sticking out in the back. What I will say about these two diapers, however, is that I LOVE the fact that I can toss them in the wash without pulling out an insert. The laundry feature of the Marvel AIO, in particular, is incredible. It combines the best of a pocket and AIO, by turning itself inside-out in the wash eliminating the need to remove the insert to wash AND having the insert still attached so you don’t have to search for it when it comes time to stuff. In the beginning this seemed like it wasn’t so much of a big deal, but a year and a half later, and who knows how many loads of laundry, this seems like sheer BRILLIANCE!A year and a half later my cloth diaper journey continues. I have just ordered the new Bum Genius 4.0 and I will be trying a Rumparooz G2 for the first time. I’m excited to see what they have to offer, but my laziness has me searching for that diaper with the easy wash-toss and re-stuffing capabilities. I haven’t tried it because it only comes in aplix, but if the Tot Bots Easy Fit came in snaps could it be the one? I’m still hopeful that I might just find “the perfect diaper” to take us through the various stages and issues that can pop up, but in the mean time I have built a very diversified stash that can handle just about any obstacle that comes my way.
