Submit Your Pictures For February's Cute Baby of the Cloth Contest

Man, you mamas have some cute kids! We had the tough decision to choose just one as our winner, but this month’s Cute Baby of the Cloth Photo Contest winners are Savannah and Maddie sporting their BFF t-shirts and Kangas from Kelly’s Closet! Thanks to moms, Ashley and Beth, who have been best friends since middle school and are now committed to seeing their daughters be BFFs too! This photo was taken at one of their monthly get-together. Even though the two families live in different states, they make an effort to get their girls together regularly and hope they’ll cloth diaper their own babies someday.

FROM ASHLEY: The baby on the left is my daughter Savannah, and the baby on the right is my best friend Beth's daughter, Maddie. Beth and I have been best friends since middle school, and we're hoping that our daughters will be best friends too! One thing we share is a love for cloth diapers, and this picture shows our daughters in their Baby Kangas that we bought from Kelly's Closet. The girls are also in matching shirts that say "Best Friends Forever". Beth and Maddie live in Birmingham, AL and Savannah and I live in Atlanta, GA. We try to meet halfway between the two cities once a month. This picture is of our daughters enjoying themselves at the rocking chairs in front of Cracker Barrel. We hope that they will be friends even when they are mothers themselves and rocking their own babies to sleep! And we hope they cloth diaper, too. :-)

We got so many submissions of Best Friends that we had to put together another video slideshow of our “other” favorites. Seeing the sweet relationships budding between babies and their pets, their grandparents, siblings, favorite toys and other babies was absolutely priceless.

In honor of our 9th birthday, the theme for next month’s contest is: “Nine.” Get creative with this one and interpret it in your own way. Submit photos to sarah@diapershops.com by Wednesday, April 21st.

Note: By submitting a photo for this contest, you consent that Kelly’s Closet and Diapershops.com has the right to use the photo of your child and his or her first name in future newsletters.

Cute Baby of the Cloth Photo Contest – Deadline Friday!

The Real Diaper Association’s Real Diapers, Real Babies Photo Contest (announced here previously) was a huge success! There were over 160 entries of beautiful babies in cloth diapers. Entries were posted to the RDA blog, where people lobbied hard for their photos! RDA members selected the twelve winners, who will appear in the 2010 RDA Calendar. The calendar will go on sale to the public via RDA’s Café Press store in October at http://www.cafepress.com/rdassociation. Proceeds from sales of the calendar (which would make a great gift!) will help RDA in their mission to get more babies into cloth diapers.

Our grand prize winning photograph (by Jennifer H.) featured a baby playing on the beach by the Mackinaw Bridge in Michigan. Jennifer was excited to receive a $150 gift certificate from diapershops.com (our Grand Prize Sponsor) as she is hoping to upgrade her stash! The two runners-up received $50 gift certificates from Babies in Bloom and Mama Momo.

Some interesting notes about the winning pictures:
  • 8 featured boys, 4 featured girls.
  • Half the photos were taken inside and half were taken outside.
  • 4 of the pictures featured props – a wagon, a toy fire engine, a mobile, and fishing gear/boat.
  • 1 picture featured siblings.
  • 2 pictures showed babies in prefolds and covers. Those same two featured newborns.
  • 2 babies wore hats in their photos.
  • 4 pictures included water – a big lake, a little lake, a waterfall, and an ocean.
  • 7 babies wore solid color diapers, 5 babies wore prints.
  • ALL of the babies looked happy and comfortable in their real diapers!

Thanks to all who submitted photos and thanks especially to all of our sponsors who made the contest and calendar possible!

ANNOUNCING THE 2010 REAL DIAPER ASSOCIATION CALENDAR!

There’s so much going on with the Real Diaper Association lately that I was really glad when Kelly offered me this Guest Whispering opportunity to share some of it!

RDA accredits local leaders to form groups called Real Diaper Circles. Circles have local meetings to support members and people in the local community in using cloth diapers. (If you recall, Serena whispered here about our San Diego Real Diaper Circle a couple of months ago.) I love helping volunteers (who are usually already holding informal “Cloth Diaper 101” classes locally) form Circles like ours around the country.

I’m working with my brother and sister-in-law now to build a cloth diaper stash as they’re expecting their first baby in October, but, since they live 3000 miles away from me, I really wish they had a local Circle to support them through the process. Despite all the written arguments for cloth diapers and all the great explanations of cloth diapering, many people still learn about cloth diapers from a trusted friend or relative (as we used to learn from our mothers and grandmothers). As proof, how many people have you personally turned on to cloth diapers? (By the way, if you enjoy doing it, and want to organize - or help organize - a Circle locally, contact me here and I’ll help you navigate the training process).

Besides helping the local, grassroots leaders, I’ve also been working with some volunteers and folks over at the Real Diaper Industry Association on a project related to the use of cloth diapers in daycare facilities. So many of our members have run into trouble with this that I’m hoping we can join together to provide a voice and solution for the thousands of parents who want to continue cloth diapering their babies within their chosen daycare setting. Watch for more details about this project to be announced in September.

Of course, as the head of a non-profit organization, I also have to focus on raising funds to continue to do our work. We’re applying for some grant money, but we are mostly supported by donations from individuals and business members (such as DiaperShops.com!). Recently, to supplement those donations, I’ve been working with some great volunteers on a new project, which leads me to an exciting announcement...

The Real Diaper Association is launching our first Real Diapers, Real Babies Photo Contest! The winners of the contest will appear in our first ever Real Diaper Association Cloth Diaper Calendar, which will be ready for sale in October! The Grand Prize winner will receive a special prize, thanks to our Grand Prize sponsor - - none other than DiaperShops.com! Details about the contest and calendar can be found on our website, and contest updates will be posted to our blog as it progresses.

So, do you have an adorable baby in diapers? Get the camera out and start shooting! We’re looking for high quality photos of happy babes in real diapers to grace our walls for a month at a time. Any U.S. resident can enter, and RDA members will do the voting. Contest ends 8/24, so get on it!! Can’t wait to see your photos!

Now, finally, since employees of RDA are prohibited from entering the contest, I’ll share a cloth diaper picture of my littlest here... Isn’t he cute??? J
