TotsBots began after our second baby, Maia, was born in 2001. Having used disposables for three years on our first child, we headed down the cloth nappy route with fingers crossed as lots of people thought we were a bit mad to be using old-fashioned nappies (incidentally folk who had never used cloth nappies before!) Four months later having tried various brands of cloth nappies we were about to give up. I then decided to design and make my own nappies combining the best of both, the convenience of disposables with the comfort of cloth. Even I was amazed at how well my prototypes worked! Soon our friends wanted some, they told their friends, who told their friends and it wasn't long before we were well on our way to became the thriving business TotsBots is today. We are still a family run business, led by myself and my partner Magnus. (The kids help out too, Kyle helps in dispatch during the summer holidays, Maia helps choose colourways for new prints and the youngest two, Darach and baby Stroan, give our products a thorough testing daily!)

Our nappies have evolved hugely since the first towelling prototypes with the fairly recent addition of the Easyfit Birth to Potty to our range. We came up with the concept for this about 3 years ago and it took about 12 months to fully research and test the design and component fabrics. Essentially it is a hybrid nappy, a cross between a Pocket and an All-in-One. It is a one piece with the option to stuff giving extra absorbency when required. We were looking for the nappy to tick lots of boxes, it needed to be easy to use yet perform as well as a two piece; slim fitting yet absorbent with great containment; fast drying with the option to boost absorbency when required; but most of all it needed to be durable and comfortable for baby. By using a combination of fabrics, knitted bamboo absorbent interior, hidden microfibre core, wickproof edging and wick free PU outer we feel we have achieved what we set out to do. The Easyfit is now by far our best seller despite the fact that the original TotsBots nappy was a two piece.

We are very proud of the fact that all TotsBots nappies are made in our factory Glasgow, this gives us total control over quality and it is a great feeling to know that we are providing jobs to local people. We have a very dedicated, experienced team who have been making nappies day-in day-out for the last 9 years. This is clearly reflected in the the quality and performance of our products. Product Focus: Bum Essentials

Bum Essentials was started by Adnan and Nora, parents of 4 young children under the age of 6. When their 3rd childre was born they starting thinking there had to be a modern cloth diaper available. Diapering was becoming very expensive. Nora searched and found the cutest cloth diapers. After she started using cloth diaper she realized her trash was cut in half and all the diaper rashes she had dealt with her first two children were non existent with using cloth. Nora wished she had used cloth diapers on her older two children because they had terrible diaper rashes all the time - not to mention the significant money savings. Motivated by her cloth diaper experience after a couple years she decided to get more involved in making her own cloth diapers. Nora had lots of ideas about how to make the perfect cloth diaper. As business owners they new what it would take to make a business work so they invested 9 months in planning and designing a cloth diaper!

They worked hard on all the products and the design. Nora sought out to perfect the modern cloth diaper by including everything she felt was important in a diaper. The Bum Essentials Bumbino One-Size Cloth Diaper is similar to a hybrid diaper, but it was nearly a year before other "hybrid" diapers were on the market.

Following is what is special about the Bum Essentials Bumbino One-Size Cloth Diaper:

1. Not a traditional pocket diaper. Nora disliked stuffing diapers because they were too time consuming and hubby couldn't help stuff because his hands were too big. Each diaper features snap in Bum Pads which are easy to change and clean.
2. Elasticized waist. Every diaper Nora used always had a gap in the front when they were on the baby and often resulted in leaks from the top of the diaper. The elastic in the front of the Bum Essentials diaper really helps prevent leaks!

In additional to the design, the material they use is just as important for a quality product. The diaper shell is made of waterproof coated polyester to prevent wetness from seeping through. The Bum Pads are made of cotton and bamboo blends. Once style has a hint of polyester for extra softness and flexibility. Bamboo was chosen for its antibacterial qualities and superb absorption.

Their Bum Bag is made from the same material as the diapers and have many nice features such as being reversible - giving you the ability to change the colors! The bag is also thicker so there is less chance of odors or wetness escaping the bag.

A lot of thought and care was put into their products to be user friendly and economical for parents and caregivers. They want their products to be known for their quality and ease of use.

Bamboo Baby Product Focus

I am Crystal, distributor for Bamboo Baby. I have carried a variety of cloth diapers during my 9 years of business and was thrilled to find the Bamboo Baby line from Dri-Line. Kushies Baby designs, manufactures and markets an innovative collection of quality baby products and accessories. The company was established as Diana Dolls Wear Ltd. in 1953, by Mary Malinowski of Stoney Creek, Ontario. Founded as a small "cottage-style" industry, it grew to become the only Canadian manufacturer of doll clothing and accessories, with a customer list that included all the major Canadian department stores. In 1987, Mary Malinowski retired and on January 1st 1988, Susan Malinowski and Sam Perez purchased Diana Dolls Wear Ltd. assets.

With a seasonal product line focused on Christmas, Diana Dolls Wear Ltd. naturally began to look for additional markets possibilities for the company to expand. The decision was made to concentrate efforts on the infant children's market, with the initial product to be a re-useable form-fitted cloth diaper. The internationally trademarked name Kooshies was created for the new product line. As President, Sam Perez, explained, "It was a unique name easily pronounced in many languages, enabling the product to be marketed worldwide under one name."

After designing the revolutionary 100 per cent cotton, reusable diaper, Kooshies undertook a year of extensive testing and refinements, and went on to patent the Kooshies diaper.

Kooshies was awarded the privilege of displaying the "Ecologo" of the Canadian Ministry of the Environment on their patented cloth diapers and have received numerous awards and "Best Buy" rankings for their products. Sam Perez recalls, "Timing was an extremely important factor. In the late 1980s there was a new and growing awareness in Canada concerning environmental issues, and Kooshies offered a quality, environmentally - friendly product at the right time".

The Canadian public also responded to the "Kooshies' washable diaper with an overwhelming positive response as Kooshies offered a product better for the environment, a product that made diapering convenient for parents and healthy for the baby.

In just over a year, Kooshies became the industry leader in Canada, with sales exceeding initial projections tenfold. Their market was also expanding into the United States at this time. Since 1990 Kooshies has grown to become a market leader in more than 35 countries around the world.

State-of-the-art manufacturing equipment and meticulous inspection standards for the expanding Kooshies product line, which currently encompasses over 350 baby products, ensures the continuation of the company's high quality standards.

The year 2003 has been notable for Kooshies. When Sam took over the company in 1988, the name was spelled "KOOSHIES". This name had been successfully registered with a worldwide trademark. However, there was opposition from a company registered in the United States and over a ten-year period, without any real progress, the parties finally reached a settlement early 2003. Sam realized the solution would be to change the spelling. This year the corporate logo, labels and packaging have been changed to "KUSHIES".

Today, Kushies is located in a huge, beautiful facility in Stoney Creek, Ontario - less than an hour's drive outside of Toronto. All of our corporate and manufacturing personnel are housed under one roof, resulting in increased efficiency. Sam reflects that, 2003 has been a big year for us. One day over breakfast, Jason and Kim Graham-Nye came across an interesting fact. They discovered conventional disposable diapers are the third largest contributors to landfills in the world and yet only five percent of the population uses them. It was a fact of stunning proportion met by another amazing fact. A single disposable diaper can take up to 500 years to biodegrade in the landfill. Well, that got the Jason and Kim thinking, since they were about to have a baby themselves. At 60 diapers a week until toilet training kicks in, compounded by the possibility of having more than one child... well, it was beyond comprehension. And so they gasped. Did they want to jump on the landfill train? Absolutely not! What would the neighbors say? How would they face the world on Earth Day? And what about their garbage can? Could it contain it all?

It was too much to imagine and so they did what any two self respecting, socially responsible people do in a situation like that, they began researching an alternative. Obviously, disposables were out. Cloth used too much water for the water conscious couple living in drought-stricken Australia. Jason and Kimberly discovered a Tasmanian company that made flushable diapers, right in their own backyard! Thrilled with the discovery and their belief in the product, they bought the worldwide rights (excluding Australia and New Zealand), raised several million dollars, improved the product and brought the concept to the United States (in Portland, Oregon).

Fair Dinkum
The company’s motto, Fair Dinkum, is an Australian expression that means being genuine and real with everyone you encounter. That is gDiapers philosophy toward their business, their people, their customers and the planet.

What are gDiapers?

About the Inventor...

Erin Kimmett, owner and designer of Thirsties, became infatuated with the sewing machine and all its wonders beginning at a very young age. Her grandmother, Pearl McBride, was a truly gifted craftswoman and eventually become a local celebrity in her artful expressions. Pearl's father passed away when she was just a baby leaving she and her mother to fend for themselves in a poverty-stricken tenement of New York City. Pearl was taught to sew professionally alongside learning her ABCs and tying her shoes. Though Pearl was only a child, she and her mother worked tirelessly together as sewers for a large clothing manufacturing company to try and make ends meet. Despite the fact that she was forced to sew in lieu of a formal education in order to keep bread on the table for herself, Pearl was enamored with the needle and thread and all the limitless possibilities of creativity it provided. As an adult, she continued to sew for both hobby and profession. Never was she seen without a needle and thread in her hand. In due time, she graciously passed along her gift and her unquenchable thirst for creativity and sewing to her granddaughter, Erin Kimmett.

Pearl has since passed, but her love for sewing is still expressed in Thirsties cloth diapers today. As a new cloth diapering mom herself, Erin Kimmett, couldn’t find a diaper cover that quite suited the needs of her baby, and therefore set out to create her own design of waterproof wraps. The first covers were patterned, cut, and sewn on her dining room table and went through several tweaks over the course of 18 months before they were finally released! It was a painstaking process, but all the hard work and innovation paid off and resulted in the best selling diaper cover on the market today.

Gro Baby: Two Snaps Up!

Two Snaps Up!

Gro Baby launched their revolutionary diaper a few months ago and it quickly became a cloth diaper favorite. Now, added to the Gro Baby family is the Vanilla color Gro Baby diaper, now available with Snaps!

Now, there are some hand-offs between the hook and loop version and the snaps version and I’m here to highlight them in order to help you determine which diaper will work best for you and your little one!

Hook and Loop

The original Gro Baby diaper features a new, proprietary hook and loop that is soft and non-pilling. Although many people complain how hook and loop (aka Velcro or Aplix) ages over time - this diaper continues to look and feel great wash after wash! Additionally, with this unique hook and loop you get endless adjustments in the waist to accommodate the fluffy bellied or slim bellied child without the scratchy hook and loop irritating your little one’s tummy!

Pros:
Hook and Loop version allows for tab “directionality” (ie. you can start by fastening
either tab first since they can overlap in either direction).
Virtually limitless adjustments, providing the best possible fit.

Con:
* If your little one is prone to strip off their diapers, then it’s very easy to do with this diaper!

Snaps

The new Gro Baby diaper with Snaps is essentially identical to its sister, except there is no hook and loop closure material on the front - so the entire diaper is constructed from PUL (polyurethane laminate). The waist snaps are the same super durable YKK snaps the diaper utilizes for the rise adjustment; they’re virtually toddler proof.

Pro:
Snaps are very strong and durable, no streaking toddler with these!
No need to prepare the tabs for laundry

Con:
* Limited adjustments for fastening the diaper


The new snap version gets “two snaps up.” However, I’m still a bit partial to the original because I love the unique hook and loop and how quick and easy it is to adjust!
