August Spotlight Mom

Name: Dina
Hometown: Brooklyn, NY
Mom to: Chaim (6 months old)
Occupation: Magazine Editor, Mom
Loves: Knitting, playing guitar and listening to music
Fav. Cloth Diaper: Goodmama

Who introduced you to cloth diapering? I actually stumbled across cloth diapering on the Internet when I was pregnant with my son. I only know one person in real life who cloth diapers and I met her last week!

What is one cloth diapering tip you wish you had gotten at the very start? Don’t buy a whole stash of a certain brand without trying out one or two first. [Ed. Note: Good advice!]

What is the one cloth diapering tip you would tell a new mom? Don’t be intimidated by wool. It’s really easy to care for and works great as an overnight cover.
What is one thing you wish you could do more of? I wish I could do more “date nights” with my husband, but babysitters are not really in our budget right now.

Ahhhh - the beloved "date nights." Thankfully we have plenty of family who would be willing to watch the kids but my hubby seems to think my desire to have an afternoon or evening without the kids is "wrong."

"We're a family," he says. Yes, well, us grownups need some quality time (sans kids) too! =)

Here's to hoping you can go on a date soon!

I am very intimidated by wool...

We don't have a budget for date nights either, but we've started swapping dates with another couple by watching their kids in the middle of the day on Saturdays - then they watch our kids the next time. The kids play together, we know they're staying with someone we trust, and we save babysitter money. Maybe that would work for you?

I refused to buy one kind of diapers only. SO, that's great advice!

I also wish we could budget more date nights as well

Ah! I too learned by mistake not buy a whole stash without really knowing what you are wanting/ getting! Talk about a waste of a whole lot of $$$!! Dear hubby will never let me live that one down! Too bad the ones I got are so bad they aren't even worth selling! Still trying to decide whether to toss them or find another use for them. . .

Good luck on the date nights! DH and I haven't had one in nearly a year. :(

You have some great advice there! I bought several different diapers until I settled on one I love the most. Great spotlight and your baby is adorable!

I know what you mean about not buying a whole stash w/o trying one first. I did that with the OS Fuzzi Bunz. It was my first CD ever and didnt know how to use it or how big or small it needed to be (newbie lol) but after Serena helped me out, I WAS LUCKY!! I ended up loving the big stash of os Fuzzi bunz we got!

Good advice. I admit that I'm intimidated by wool. But maybe it's just what we need for overnight.

Thanks for the tip about wool. I have been thinking about trying it, but have been slightly intimidated about trying it.
Good advice about not buying all of one kind of diaper before you try them. I learned that one the hard way. :)

Please PLEASE ladies, DON'T be intimidated by wool! IT has to be the EASIEST part of my stash to take care of.

Try to figure out WHAT it is that is bugging you (for me lanolizing not really any other issue) and I'll BET some other wonderful WAHM has found a way to make it easier!

Spot scrub in the shower when needed but otherwise most of my covers only see maintenance once a MONTH! and smell BETTER then my other dipes (great for family beds) not to mention longies can double for pants in warm or cool weather, that saves too!

Date night? Is that where I go buy dates for dessert?

I'm still intimidated by wool--I haven't really given it a shot yet since I'm kind of in my happy groove with pocket diapers. I think I may give it a go though, since I've heard others say its great for overnight.

Good for you for doing cloth without knowing someone in real life who did it first! I kind of wanted to use cloth before I was pregnant, but finding a cousin who used cloth diapers too made me feel much less crazy about it and she gave me good advice!

Great advice! As for the date nights, have you considered finding a friend to trade child care with? That way, you and your friend both get a date night! :D

I'm so impressed that you started doing cloth without even knowing anyone other cloth diapering mamas!
