Putting Rockin' Green Cloth Diaper Detergent to the Test

As a detergent manufacturer, I have a little bit of a dirty secret. You may find it a bit shocking to find me in the aisle of the grocery store buying detergent. My laundry room is littered with detergent boxes, bags and bottles. All with someone else's name on them. The reason behind it is simple. The only way that I could make a better detergent, is to test everything else that is on the market. And find out why it works...or in most cases why it doesn't. In a recent testing round I did wash after wash with some of the "other guys" cloth diaper safe, clean rinsing formulas and was shocked at the amount of bubbles that were produced. I was even more shocked, when I had to do 2, 3, 4 plus rinses to get everything out of my washer. One popular brand in particular, I had to do several empty washes just to get the foam out of my machine! Which was what inspired me to create this video.

When you are washing clothes, soap buildup isn’t that big of an issue. If you do a load of towels with no soap, chances are you will have a washer full of suds. Towels lose absorbency over time because of detergent buildup, but most people just assume this is normal and replace towels every few years because they stop holding water.

But washing diapers is a whole new ballgame, and buildup can really mess up your diapers. The more rinses you have to do, the higher your water bill and the more wear and tear on your diapers and washer. All of the suds and such are gone from Rockin’ Green in the first rinse, because it was designed to have just enough for cloth diapers and nothing more. We aren't a clothing detergent that just happens to be OK for diapers, Rockin' Green was created for the soul purpose of washing diapers. Though, it will really really rock a load of towels or baby clothes...

Wow! Loved that demonstration!

I'm really liking Rockin' Green. It's the only thing I've used in my new washer - I'm afraid to switch to any "Other Guys" because of buildup! :)

wow, very interesting to see the difference. I want to try that with my detergent now and see how it stacks up! :)

Is Rockin' Green okay for my BG 3.0s? I'm worried about the warranty. Is the first rinse an extra rinse, or just letting your clothes wash/rinse on their own with no extra step? THANKS!

I was already convinced that Rockin Green is the best....but this just confirms it! Thanks for the video.

Interesting video. Thanks for posting it.

Great video. I'm pretty new to cloth diapering and am still trying to figure all this washing stuff out. It is the one thing that makes cloth diapering less attractive to me. In that though, I am so thankful for all of your blog posts about it. I have a live gro baby system that I have not prewashed yet because my baby isn't here yet. I'm considering different detergent types.
What makes Rockin' Green better than something like Tiny Bubbles?
I'd appreciate any feedback.

I'd been looking and looking into getting some RnG to try out, but hadn't yet convinced myself into making an order. That is, until I saw this video on the RnG site!

I watched it, then showed it to the rest of the family and after that it was a matter of researching the price in comparison to the organic detergent we already use. We found out we'd be spending pretty much the same (shipping included) and put in our first order for one bag, a couple of samples, and a few extra scent cards. We ordered everything in a different scent because we couldn't decide on just one. RnG is like the Baskin Robins of CD detergents! XD

We plan on using it for all our laundry, too, just because it seems to work so well on hard water and rinse so cleanly, plus we figureit will keep buildup from another detergent in the washer from affecting our CDs.

this really has me more determined to go and try some... I am having an issue with lots of bubbles with my current CD friendly detergent and i'm not liking it, and i haven't even been CD but for a few months so far... hrmmm

Rockin Green- so many scents... which did you use for this test? And also- why won't you tell us WHO the other guys are, so we know what to avoid in order to not ruin our diapers?

Wow! That was such a cool video! I had no idea... But that explains a lot.
I want to know, are the "other guys" just regular detergents, or other detergents meant specifically for cloth diapers?

I'd be interested to see how much of the soap was left in the washcloths. To me, this video didn't prove that rockin green really rinses cleaner, it just proved that it doesn't sud up as much. We should be able to see the washcloths afterward and see how clean THEY are, not just the water.

I love Rockin' Green!

I had been fighting stinkies for months with all sorts of different wash routines/sunning etc. I recently bought some Rockin' Green and after about 5 wash cycles no more stinkies!

Not sure how scientific this test really is. Doesn't it depend on your washer? And doesn't it also depend on how the detergent is put in the washer? Makes you think though.

Holy. Cow. That is all. Okay, no, not really. But WOW!! I've been using RG Soft Rock for a couple of weeks now and LOVE it for how my diapers look and smell, and how my kiddos aren't breaking out. This? This is the icing on the cake!!

I, too, was wondering who the "Other Guys" are.

I enjoyed the video. I had heard great things about Rockin' Green, but was happy with our brand of soap until my son got a rash, and I ran a hot wash on clean diapers to see if there was any buildup. It took two full hot washes to get all the suds out, so I put in an order for Rockin' Green in the hopes that my little boy's sensitive skin fares better. I'm looking forward to trying it, but I'm also really excited about the hard water formula coming out soon. We have very very hard water.

I tried Rockin' Green for the first time almost a week ago. I was so impressed, I turned around and put in an order for a full bag 2 days later! We have very hard water, and yet I was able to use only 1 1/2 tbs (classic formula)! I ALWAYS do an extra rinse or two because there's ALWAYS bubbles left over. BUT with Rockin' Green there weren't ANY bubbles left so no extra rinses needed! The diapers came out smelling clean and it even almost completely got rid of the stinkies we have from mineral buildup (I'm waiting for an order of RLR to do a final strip to get out the rest). It's Rockin' Green all the way for us!

That video was great. I can't wait to get my Rockin' Green samples in the mail and try it out on my diapers! Too bad I only ordered yesterday and we are getting slammed with snow now so who knows when it will come??

Thanks for the video! I just wish I knew for sure who the other guys were.

wow! That was an eye opener of what is happening to my diapers.

I love Rockin' Green! I tried it after seeing it reviewed on 2 or 3 site that I frequent. Choosing a scent is HARD!

Now I REALLY want to try rockin' green! I would love to know who the "other guys" are also...

Rockin Green really is the gold standard for diaper laundry.

Mindy-I have tried several different detergents and faced either build-up, smells or set-in stains. Rockin Green washes really well, rinses out completely and doesn't leave any residue or smell. I can't speak for Tiny Bubbles, but compared to the other detergents I've tried it's the best.

As far as the washing routine goes, don't be intimidated (although I think all of us were at first). Check out the "Cloth Diaper Laundry" posts on the blog, I think there are 8, for info. The one about keeping it simple should, hopefully, help with your confusion. Good Luck!!!
