Cloth Diaper Washing Confession

I have a confession to make. I do a big NO-NO each time I wash cloth diapers, and I don’t even feel bad about it. I started doing this “bad” thing when I started using a new HE washer and had to completely change my diaper wash routine. Are you ready? Here it is…

I USE TIDE!

Yes, it’s true. I use Original Liquid HE Tide that can be purchased at any given super store, grocery store, or in-the-middle-of-nowhere store every single time I wash cloth diapers. I fill the cap to the #1 line during the cold wash and the hot wash, plus add baking soda. And, I haven’t had one issue since I switched. I tried all the natural/Free & Clear/Free & Gentle versions and they worked in my old top loading washer, but the only one that works in my HE Top Loader is the blue straight up original Tide. No need to pull your hair out trying to find the “right” detergent, you’re a parent and you have enough to worry about. Many moms swear by this detergent and now I’m one of them. There, I said it. And, I feel much better.

Gina is a green living advocate, and mom of two boys (ages 2 & 3), who has cloth diapered exclusively for 3 years. A self-proclaimed tree hugger, she loves to share the benefits of all things natural and organic.

I am having so many issues with my new he toploader and I tried tide powder, but it burned my little ones behind! Even with two or three extra rinses. Does the liquid wash out differently? Which wash cycles do you use?

Padded Tush Stats just wrote a couple positive articles about Tide :) She collects data from hundreds of CD users to draw conclusions.

I use the Tide free and clear :) I've never used baking soda though-should I try? I only fill the cap up to the 1 line for the cold wash, then I do a hot wash and three cold rinses with no detergent. I don't have smelly diapers and I don't have stains...I'd say Tide works pretty good :)

The Tide Original powder worked well for us. Then they switched. Then I started using the liquid. Started to develop stink issues. I still use it on my clothes though. Anyway, I added bleach to help with stink. Even that started to fail after a while. I've been trying various things, but so far nothing has worked long term. I've been thinking of making my own, but event hat has me nervous.

I used Tide Powder and love it! We have tried 6+ cloth diaper friendly detergents and they have all either caused horrible burns/rashes or eventually caused stinkies. Tide is the only one that seems to work consistently! :-D

Im not sure why you call it a no-no?! Rumparooz, happy heineys and fuzzi bunz all recommend tide on their websites!
I think we as moms feel guilty because it isn't organic but you know what ........ it works!
And it was THE. Only. Thing. That worked for us after trying every possible combination of stripping and fixing our ammonia filled diapers. Tide has enzymes which make a detergent just that....a detergent. Most homemade and all natural brands lack enzymes making them a soap.
Use tide proudly!

Same here!! It wasn't until I read a post on Doable Diaper that I started using Tide.

We are allergic to Tide but found that Lulu's in the Fluff works well in our HE front loader after A LOT of trial and error and you're right!! When you find something that works, no matter what it is...you must just roll with it! ;)

I use no more than 1/4 cup of baking soda in an HE machine.
