Hopefully I have done a little bit of this work for you. At Padded Tush Stats, people fill out surveys on how different diapers worked for them. One of the questions they are asked is whether or not the diaper works for them. So here are the results on how some diapers have worked at night:

One of the things I found when looking through survey responses is that although a pocket diaper may not hold up at night with the original insert, many have added an additional insert or a different insert altogether. For example, one very popular insert people recommended was the Joey Bunz Hemp Insert.
However, for naptime I like to use snaps because my girl likes to play a while before going to sleep and she takes off her diaper if it is velcro (see picture above).
Can I just say that the WEEK I figured this all out and found the perfect nighttime solution, I brought home a newborn. Isn’t that how life works? So I am no longer waking up throughout the night for one baby, but I am for another. Ah the life of a Mom! But in case you are wondering, here are the diapers that I use for my two kids at night for minimal leaks:
Baby #1: (24-pound, 20 month old heavy wetter , female)– Ragababe size large with a large insert laid overtop, Sustainablebabyish Magic Fitted Diaper with a fleece cover, or a Bumgenius 4.0 or Fuzzibunz One Size stuffed with a Knickernappies Super Do Insert.
Baby #2: (10-pound, 11 week old skinny legged heavy wetter, male) – Kissaluvs size Zero or Little Boppers Newborn fitted with a Thirsties XS cover.

My name is Tara and I am the owner of Padded Tush Stats. I am a happy mom of a wonderful 17-month old baby and am about to be a mother of a newborn! I stay home with my girl as much as possible, but I am also a full time graduate student in education. I have cloth diapered my daughter for over a year now and love it. I started only because I am just so frugal, but now I am excited about how I am helping the environment.
I experienced a lot of difficulties finding the "right" diaper for my daughter (she is 17 months and I feel like I JUST figured it out). She is a heavy wetter, so I went through a lot of brands before I found what worked for me. But I spent quite a bit of money on highly recommended brands, only to find that they didn't work for her. That's when I wondered if there was a way to categorize reviews based on the unique needs of babies. My dissertation is a survey study on writing programs--so when I had this question about cloth diapering reviews, my mind immediately went to surveys! The surveys in here are in no way a reflection of fancy statistics and survey work, so please don't judge me on that. These are just simple surveys to hopefully help out a few cloth diapering parents/guardians.

I have found that I can't use pockets at night. No matter what I put in it she leaks. We use a prefold wrapped around a regular insert and a hemp insert. Its bulky, but she wakes up dry :) For naptimes a pocket with two inserts works just fine :)
Thanks for the post. We have been using BG 3.0 for my daughter for the last two years...never had a leak or blowout. Now that I have a 7 week old boy, we have leaks all the time now and I am in the process of trying to figure out a solution. We don't really have the $ to try a whole new bunch of diapers, so I am working with adjusting the inserts. I was given two GoGreen Champ 2.0 as a gift and they are the best for nighttime...no leaks and trim fit. Which I might have to get a few more, if I can't solve my leaking problem.
I have found that the Blueberry Bamboo & BumGenius 4.0 w/ newborn doubler works well for us at night on my 12 weeks old son who is about 15lbs.
My solution to nighttime leaks are Kushie Ultra AIO diapers. They are made of a very bulky PUL and thick microfiber. They are very bulky diapers (doesnt seem to bother my son) but they last all night!
I actually started using cloth as a desperate attempt to keep my boy dry at night. He was waking up soaked all the way through his Pampers Overnights every night. We were lucky & found a solution right away- Kawaii Overnight diaper usually stuffed with a BG microfiber & a babykicks joey bunz premium. A BG 4.0 with the same in the pocket works just as well. I am proud to say we haven't had a leak yet. My guy is almost 15 months old & 26 pounds. We have been using cloth for about 3 months :)
My solution for nighttime is one size fitted diapers (this kind, to be exact: http://www.bellabottoms.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=81 ) with 2 inserts included (either microfiber, hemp, a small folded prefold... a combination of whatever is on hand, really). And I buy great covers from shops like Brookiellen.etsy.com or Zookies.etsy.com to top it all off. Gets my guy through 11-13 hours of sleep a night. He very rarely wakes up soaked through, and that's only if we let him drink too much right before bed.
We use a BG 4.0 snap with 3 (yep, 3!) Joey Bunz Hemparoo Premiums in it for both my 2 1/2 yr old daughter and 18 month old son. My daughter can also wear the Super Undies Nighttime Undies all night without leaking.
Do you think the top photo could be removed from this post? There are horrible people out there who could use the photo of a child's naked bottom for their own disgusting purposes. The photo is violating that child's privacy.
It totally varies. One night, I was out of my normal nighttime diaper (b/c hubs grabs what he grabs sometimes) and put him in an AIO that's a little big and it lasted all night. But typically, we use Kawaii heavy wetter with one of their inserts and a hemp insert behind.
He still wakes at night, but is usually not leaked.
We use Kawaiis with both inserts.
This is why I invented my own!! No leaks since!
I am a little surprised by the stats you shared. Does it say anywhere how many people filled out the survey?
I love your site and I've taken a few of the surveys! Its great to have statistics like that! For me, I have fitteds and wool wraps for nighttime only. Days are pockets. It took me a solid 3 months to figure out what combo worked best though!
I'm honestly surprised by the poll results. My son isn't an extremely heavy wetter and he leaks through mnay of those (some that I love for daytime when he'll be in them 4 hours or less). Kawaii overnights double stuffed work wonderfully, he's never woken up wet in them. My only problem is my son gets a rash everytime I try to have him in cloth overnight. Doesn't matter what brand or fabric type...it happens everytime. Makes me sad that I found something that works so well but can't use it.
