Cloth Diapering Helped Save Our Finances

When we decided to start a family, my husband and I agreed that I would stay home with the baby. My job didn’t pay enough to justify the extra expenses of day care anyway. This was going to mean living on a single income and a very tight budget. But at the time, I don’t think we fully realized how tight. When I began researching the major expenses of having a baby, diapers were the one thing everyone talked about: they were expensive. I couldn’t imagine how we were going to come up with enough money to keep buying disposable diapers every week.

I decided to search for other options and I found information all over the internet about cloth diapers, in spite of the fact that no store I’d ever been in carried more than Gerber prefolds. My research began when I was only one month pregnant and within days I knew that cloth diapers were the best economic choice for us and I never looked back. I ate up all the information I could find on the subject. My days soon revolved around the benefits of pocket diapers vs. prefolds and snaps vs. Aplix.

My daughter is now nearly 18 months old and we almost exclusively cloth diaper. We have an eclectic stash of prefolds with Bummis and Thirsties covers, Thirsties Fab Fitted diapers, Thirsties Duo diapers, bumGenius Deluxe AIOs and bumGenius 3.0 One-Size pocket diapers. Thank goodness we do because I don’t know how our finances would have survived otherwise. Due to the economic downturn my husband’s income has remained stagnant, but every other bill we have has increased. I conserve electricity, bake my own bread, shop consignment sales and line dry my cloth diapers. Then my husband developed a clinical depression resulting in increased medical bills. There have been months were I only had about $40 a week for groceries and other household supplies, which doesn’t go very far in this part of the country. But every time I change my daughter’s diaper I say a little prayer of thanks that we use cloth diapers. When I go to the grocery store and see the aisles piled high with boxes of disposable diapers with their equally high price tags, I breathe a huge sigh of relief that they aren’t on my shopping list.

A Family Affair

It all began when I was introduced to the world of cloth diapering with my 15 month old. A friend used them, they were cute, and it saved money! So, I ordered my first three pack of Fuzzibunz.

It was love at first sight...and smell...and touch! I soon began ordering more, stalking the online shops and making room in our budget for more cloth, so that I'd have enough cloth diapers and never have to buy disposables.

When I had enough for my 15 month old, I realized that I was still buying disposables for my 2 1/2 year old for night time and naps, and discovered I was pregnant, again! I soon put cloth diapering on hold, and got rid of the stash I had acquired. I felt like I was wasting money on cloth, "special" detergent, and electricity by just cloth diapering one of my soon to be three children. I didn't have the money at the time to buy enough cloth to fully diaper three kids.

Sometime in mid pregnancy, after reading my brains out about cloth diapers and how to make it work with all of my children, I decided that I was going to make it work. I was determined to be a cloth diapering family, from newborn to toddlers.

I started over, regretting ever stopping and letting go of my dear stash. I started with diapers for the baby on the way, since she was going to be using them the most! With all of the coupons Kelly's Closet has, I had her stash ready in no time! From pocket diapers, pre-folds and covers, wet bags and detergents, we were set! Except...the toddlers. Remember, all of the kids Shay, stop wasting money on disposables! After more research, I ended up purchasing a few large Thirsties covers and some pre-folds for my 32 and 35lb toddlers. They only needed them at nap time and night time. A week later, all of our children had their own diapers and we had enough to stop buying them! Two weeks later, we ran out of disposables and we have yet to buy any more!

We were finally a 100% cloth diapering family! Even Daddy will change the diapers, knowing that we are saving a good amount of money, x3! Our toddlers love picking what color diaper they want before bed, and I love changing, washing, drying, smelling and admiring them! Here's to no more disposables!

"Fluffing" the large bum

My son was born weighing 10 lb. 4 oz. and did not fit into the newborn-sized diapers I purchased for him. He has continued to be large for his age, always measuring in the 95th percentile in height and 80th in weight. Around 18 months old, we had troubles squeezing him into most of his “one-size” diapers, especially nighttime pockets that needed extra stuffing. Friends told me that he’d “slim down” and his diapers would fit well again and that he is not really chubby. He’s just tall and solid and his physique has not changed. By 20 months, diapering was nearly impossible and our son was upset that his diapers were pinching or digging in on his skin. I had to find other solutions.

My search began in our own diaper stash. I found his Thirsties large covers still fit perfectly, but the “one-size” fitteds and standard prefolds did not. I ordered large Thirsties Fab Fitteds and found this to be an EXCELLENT combo with plenty of room to grow. The Fab Fitted is so soft and stretchy and the cover is plenty roomy. Also in our home stash, we found FuzziBunz perfect fit diapers in large are also still fitting and working, though on the last hip and waist snaps. Bumkins large all-in-ones fit great and are a favorite with babysitters, grandparents and my husband. But our combined stash of all these items added up to 6 diapers, and I do diaper laundry every OTHER day usually.

Yay! Time for shopping! There are some terrific new options out there! The Sandy’s Toddle-ease fitted paired with a Mother-Ease Air Flow cover in the toddler size is incredibly absorbent and very roomy. I find this combo is a bit bulky, so works best at home with no pants, with stretchy pants like sweats, or with jammies. With a Babykicks Hemparoo Joey Bunz doubler laid inside and a wool soaker cover outside, the Sandy’s Toddle-ease is without a doubt our new nighttime solution.

The softest, most comfortable (and hands down ABSOLUTE trimmest under clothing) of our new finds is the Bamboo Baby all-in-one toddler size. My son prefers this diaper and keeps asking for it. (He says, “New softie diaper, please, Mommy!”) The Thirsties Duo diaper in size 2 is a consistent part of our new rotation and like the large Thirsties cover and Fab-Fitted, offers a soft, stretchy diaper with room to grow. One of my favorite finds and the one that will also work when potty-training is the Little Beetle Organic Velour Cotton Learners. These training pants are thick and absorbent where it matters and have worked as well as any diaper with his Thirsties, Mother-Ease airflow or wool soaker covers on top. The Little Beetle Learners are also a great option when we are at home and he can wear them alone to more easily use the potty. They pull on and off like pants, or have snaps on the hips for easy removal when wet or soiled. The Knickernappies side-snapping pocket diaper is also a true fits-to-40-pounds diaper and one my son can’t take off when he wakes up from his naps. (Bonus!)

There are a few brands of one-size diapers from our past diapering (now mostly being used on our 4 month old) that will still work in a pinch, but do exactly that - pinch. It took a bit of research and some trial and error, but keeping our big toddler in cloth that fits until he’s using the potty is the best reward.

You Know You Are a Cloth Diaper Addict When...

I admit that I am addicted to cloth diapers of all kinds. Covers, pockets, and anything in between. My addiction started slowlyduring my 4th pregnancy we discovered we would be having twins. I then randomly searched Ebay for cloth diapers and found some seconds and ordered them. ( Not the best purchase I ever made.)

I didn’t think much about my diapers until the twins were two months old and finally big enough to wear the diapers. It was then that I started researching cloth diapers and my addiction became full blown. I now “stalk” cloth diaper website, blogs, and online stores for good deals and great giveaways. I talk about my diapers to anyone who will listen and have currently been able to switch three friends to cloth diapers just by talking about how much I love my cloth.Here are a few of my favorite moments of my cloth diaper addiction:

1) You know you are a cloth diaper addict when you start stalking your mail box after receiving a shipping notice from your favorite cloth diaper store.

2) You know you are a cloth diaper addict when you wake up from a dream that was taking place in a cloth diaper store.

3) You know you are a cloth diaper addict when you forget to tell your husband the exit while driving because you were day dreaming about Thirsties Duo Wraps while taking a family trip.

4) You know you are a cloth diaper addict when you are asked if there is anything you would like for Mother’s Day and in your head you are dreaming of getting some more fluff for your babies’ bums!

From Worry to Love in One Week!

I knew I wanted to use cloth diapers while planning to start a family. When I lived away from my home I was briefly babysat for a family who used cloth diapers, so I thought I knew what I was getting into. In hindsight, the one kid who was still in diapers was almost potty trained so she didn't wear as many diapers and I wasn't doing the laundry.

When I became pregnant I began obsessively researching about cloth diapers. I quickly learned about the various types, how to care for them, etc. I informed everyone I was going to use cloth diapers and became a cloth diaper crusader before even using them. Thankfully, my husband was agreeable to the idea; although, every time he would talk about them he would say we're going to "try" them. Try? Why would we need to try them? In my mind we were using them… end of story!

With a couple months to go, I had the opportunity to visit family a couple hours away in an area that has one small shop which carries cloth diapers. I was a bit surprised when I discovered one-size diapers are bigger and bulkier than I expected. Then I began to worry. I realized there was a chance we wouldn't like them. I had been so caught up in baby and diaper excitement I really hadn't given it much serious thought. I then began to develop fear of the unknown. What if they were too bulky, looked huge, and were uncomfortable for our baby? What if they didn't fit well or leaked all the time? What if it was just too much work? I had skimmed over blogs about issues with build up and smell, but now I was worried.

I planned what I felt was the perfect stash to get us started, and diapers were arriving in the mail at a rapid rate. I reluctantly promised my husband not to open and wash all the diapers I purchased just in case we would want to send them back. Then we waited.

Our son was born on 12/29/09 and we began using the cloth diapers when we was 10 days old. His first diapers were 6 bumGenius Deluxe 3.0 All-In-Ones, 3 Thirsties Fab Fitted Diapers, and 1 Kissaluvs Fitted Diaper. We had a couple Thirsties Diaper Covers and a couple Thirsties Duo Wrap Diaper Covers. Obviously not enough to exclusively use cloth diapers, but enough to get started. Day 1 passed, day 2, and then a week. We were using cloth diapers... and LOVING them! We were having major issues with leaking using the disposables plus we were quickly amazed with how many we were using! It was easy to see within one week how much money we could be saving by using cloth diapers exclusively.

Additionally, we had far less leaks! With much relief I opened up the other box from Kelly's Closet and started washing the rest of our new stash. Our son quickly gained weight and we were able to use the one-size diapers just a couple weeks later when he was up to 10 pounds. Our one-diaper stash consist of several bumGenius 3.0 and FuzziBunz, plus a couple Rocky Mountain diapers. I love them all, however, the bumGenius 3.0’s are becoming a quick favorite. The hook and loop tabs make getting a diaper on a wiggling infant so easy.

It is such a relief to discover we really do love cloth diapers and we're going to stick with them. I believe being over-prepared [with all the reading I did early in my pregnancy] helped. I knew how to properly launder the diapers and I had my cloth diaper friendly detergent [Charlie's Soap] ready. I had 2 diaper pail liners and a wet bag for the diaper bag. I really liked being able to launch fully into using cloth diapers all at once. I was able to establish a routine and it was a super easy transition from the disposables. The only item we haven’t purchased yet is a diaper sprayer. Right now I'm comfortable with rinsing the diapers in the sink, but a sprayer will probably be a future purchase.

I've been saying "we" were using cloth diapers, but my husband is still slowing transitioning. I've found myself changing most diapers, disposable or cloth, just because I'm quicker and it seems like less of a hassle. He started helping with the cloth by taking a dirty diaper to the pail, but he wasn't thrilled with pulling the insert out of the pocket diaper. I've since arranged the diapers to have all the all-in-ones together for him to use. The next step was the laundry.

I showed him the special detergent and went over the general instructions, so he helped out with washing a load last week. He asked a couple questions before starting the cold rinse and again before the hot wash. Then he came to tell me the diapers would not be done as soon as expected because he forgot to add fabric softener. That's right. Panic!!!

Unfortunately, he already started another rinse cycle with fabric softener. Many hot washes and nearly a day later the diapers were stripped and ready to use again. A minor set back but the diapers survived! His first attempt to change a cloth diaper a few days ago was a bit of a struggle too. He almost put it on backwards and then didn't get it snug enough. He stepped back and let me fix the diaper while he watched and took some mental notes. I appreciate his efforts to try something totally new and I'm sure he's going to be a cloth diapering pro soon!

Thirsties is Harnessing the Sun

Among Colorado’s many natural blessings is an almost daily dose of high-intensity, high-altitude sunshine--over 300 days per year. The kind that can burn your skin nastily if you stay out more than just a few minutes without protection, but as well the kind that makes solar panel manufacturers slobber on themselves.

Enter Erin Kimmett, founder and owner of one of America’s largest cloth diaper manufacturing and wholesale companies, Thirsties, Inc. Long an advocate for less-impacting methods of modern living, Kimmett began Thirsties five years ago as a venture to supplement her husband’s teaching income, to find an outlet for her incessant entrepreneurial spirit, and in large part to spread the news of the wonders of cloth diapering, both as a less-expensive means of diapering and as a way to drastically cut down on the environmental consequences of the omnipresent--and in her mind dangerous--disposable diaper.

Fast-forward the five-odd years since its inception, boasting a retailer roster of over 300 stores worldwide, and through all the struggles and hardships that any small business owner witnesses, Erin is still hard at it--the all too common platitude of “being a good steward of the planet” living deeply and with resounding truth in both her life and business ethic:

• 100% domestic manufacturing--check
• Utilizes American-made materials--check
• Purchases carbon credits to offset 100% of manufacturing and transport utilities--check
• Recycling of all used cardboard and paper--check
• 100% recycled cardboard and paper for new shipments--check

The next step is underway: to power the entire warehouse operations with solar electricity. And then some--enough to sell back to the local coal-burning utility! Thirsties is presently installing a behemoth of a solar panel array, with a configuration that at full-capacity will produce enough electricity to cover more than all of the business’ needs--11 clean, sustainable, photovoltaic Kilowatts. This equates to a total CO2 reduction of 200 tons, as if Kimmett herself is planting over 7700 trees.

Skimming past the obstacles that seemingly obstructed her path to the sun--local skepticism and regulatory hurdles, among others--Kimmett has never taken her eyes off of the prize, and is characteristically enthusiastic about steering her alternative-energy mantra to solar production. Especially relevant to Thirsties’ ability to finance the undertaking are the present federal tax credits available to anyone installing a solar energy system ¾ coupled with a special business installation credit ¾ in addition to the local utility’s own solar energy rebate program, bringing a $44,000 system down to a more small-business manageable level of roughly $7000.

The solar tour de force is only adding fuel to Kimmett’s clean energy fire, complementing an already long laundry list of green practices which dominate Thirsties’ business model. Who knows what’s next?

Cloth Diapering Gone Awry

When I first informed my family I would be using cloth diapers on my daughter, they were all very supportive. My mom even drove more than 2 hours with me to the closest brick and mortar store which carries cloth diapers so I could check them out in person before deciding to buy. When my daughter was a newborn, we used mainly Kissavlus Fitted Diapers in Size 0 with Thirsties Diaper Covers during the day and bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diapers at night.

As soon as I put that first cloth diaper on her, I was hooked, as was my husband. My parents were equally impressed and we couldn't get enough of her cute, fluffy butt! We had no issues with leaks, blow-outs, etc. and couldn't believe how easy they were to use. However, that hasn't always been the case for Kendall's other caretakers - my mom and daycare!

A few months after my daughter was born, my husband and I decided it was time for a date night. My parents came over to baby-sit (certainly not a chore in their minds!). We laid out all the cloth diapering supplies, instructed my mom in which diapers to use when and left. When I arrived home that evening, my daughter was sleeping soundly in her crib. My parents said they'd had no issues with diapers or otherwise and went home. Little did I know what I would find when she woke up later that night.

When Kendall awoke for her early morning feeding, I laid her on the changing table and unsnapped her pajamas. Her bumGenius diaper looked a little larger than usual, and I noticed the velcro tabs weren't quite as tight as I normally put them. I was surprised there weren't any leaks, as her legs were still pretty skinny and she was only about 10 pounds, but when I opened the tabs, I discovered my mom had inadvertently used the bumGenius pocket diaper as a diaper cover over the Kissaluvs Fitted diaper! Not only that, but the Kissaluvs fitted was on inside out! No wonder there were no leaks; she was certainly protected! How my mom was able to get the Kissaluvs fitted snapped on the inside is a mystery to me! My husband and I got a good laugh.

Eventually I went back to work when Kendall was 3 months old. We were fortunate to find a daycare that would continue to cloth diaper her. During her first week, there was a bit of a learning curve with the diapers, and each night I couldn't wait to see what would happen next with the diapers. Usually the diapers are just on a bit looser than I would prefer, but one night, Kendall's bottom felt a little funny - it turns out, her diaper was on backward! How they managed to get her bumGenius diapers fastened in the back on a wiggly 3-month old, I'll never know!

After some careful guidance for Kendall's grandmother and daycare providers, we haven't had any other wacky diaper applications. However, with each misstep, we've never had a leak! Now, if only I could get the diapers to wash themselves....

The Gift of Cloth Diapering

On 9/9/09, my daughter was born. She weighed a whopping 9 pounds and 5 ounces and as her slimy, beautiful little body was placed on my belly, my world changed forever. When a friend came to visit us in the hospital bearing the kind gift of three one size bumGenius One Size 3.0 cloth diapers, my diapering philosophy was also irrevocably changed.

The thing is, I had the intention to cloth diaper while I was expecting – I intended on using prefolds because I didn’t know that there were any other options. Then, I talked to a friend of mine who was using FuzziBunz; they sounded so cool I had to look them up online for myself. WOAH! I couldn’t imagine myself shelling out $15-$20 per diaper—especially since the reason I wanted to cloth diaper in the first place was so I could save money.

I resigned myself to stick with Gerber prefolds and rubber pants I could find at Wal-Mart, Target, and BabiesRUs, although I was less inclined to use them after seeing how much cloth diapering had changed. However, I just couldn’t bring myself to buy them. I registered for some Kushies but unfortunately no one bought them for me and I knew my husband and I would never be able to shell out that amount of cash at one time on our own.

Thankfully my friend walked into our hospital room bearing the gift of three, adorably amazing diapers (along with a special coupon), and I was hooked. Seriously, it was the one of the best baby gifts I received, and that’s after four—no seriously, four baby showers.

My daughter was big baby, as mentioned above, so my bumGenius diapers fit her right away—though the rise was a little high. As soon as her umbilical cord fell off I started using all three of her cloth diapers. I loved them so much I’d wash them twice a day just so I could use them more. Obviously, though, full time cloth diapering wasn’t an option at this time. What I discovered, though, was it wasn’t necessary to shell out the big bucks for these amazing diapers all at once. Sure, $13-18 a diaper seems steep when you look at all the diapers a baby needs at once, but if you take small bites out of that chunk just a little bit at a time, it really isn’t that bad; and that’s what we did.

With each paycheck, we bought 1-3 diapers. At first, I was unaware of all the different types of diapers that were out there. I was only aware of one website that had bumGenius diapers - so I gradually bought all of their great colors. One day, as I was online, I decided to do a Google search for “cloth diapers.”

I was delighted to find the Smartipants One Size diapers for only $14.95 each. I bought a 3-pack, bringing the price down to only $13 each. I wanted to pay it forward, so I kept two of those diapers and set one aside for a friend of mine who was expecting and interested in cloth diapering. I didn’t know what kind of diaper she’d prefer, so I went ahead and bought her a bumGenius and a Happy Heinys One Size diaper as well the next time I made my orders so that she’d have three different diapers to try. Once I touched the Happy Heinys for myself and saw how stinkin’ adorable they are, I had to have some for my daughter, so I bought a couple of them with my next paycheck.

I finally discovered websites like Kelly’s Closet that offered tons of different types of diapers; searching through these sites to find the perfect cloth diaper for my family became an obsession. I now have a stash of 24 one-size pocket diapers (26 once my recent order arrives) including many different brands such as Haute Pockets, Knickernappies, Gro Baby (which I thankfully won from Kelly’s Closet), FuzziBunz, Tweedlebugs, Rocky Mountain and even some Indian prefolds (which I have yet to master). And yes, I have found the perfect diaper to suit my needs. I absolutely adore the FuzziBunz One Size diaper because of its durability and great—no I mean great—fit.

It’s funny. Originally my husband and I never intended to cloth diaper fulltime. We fully intended on using disposables outside of the house. However, with the purchase of a small wet bag, I discovered cloth diapering while outside of the home is surprisingly easy! I’ve even gone so far as to make my own baby wipes—double sided flannel wipes stitched together with a zigzag stitch that work better than any disposable (see The Cloth Diaper Whisperer Tutorial for DIY Wipes). I wet the wipes with wipe solution I make from wipe cubes I bought online. After I made some for myself, I sent a couple of these homemade wipes to two friends who cloth diaper.

To make a long story short, our Diaper Genie is officially retired and gathering dust in the basement, and it’s been weeks since my daughter donned a disposable. To tell you the truth, my husband and I have never wasted a dime on disposable diapers ourselves. The ones we have are still left over from my baby showers! And as for the $6+ I was spending on wipes every week? That money is now saved for better purposes as well. Our daughter is happily diapered in cloth diapers all the time, and we’re so pleased that she has the best material imaginable next to her sensitive skin. I’m sold on cloth diapers 100% and I will never go back!

My aforementioned friend had her baby and is also cloth diapering with a preference of Indian unbleached prefolds and some Thirsties Diaper Covers. Cloth diapers are truly the gift that keeps on giving. I’m certainly glad someone thought to give some to me!

A Good Investment

When I found out I was pregnant, I began thinking about cloth diapers. I don’t remember why, but I thought I wanted to use them. After briefly considering FuzziBunz, we decided on prefolds because they were cheapest option and we could use them to stuff pockets, should we ever decide to go that route. We bought 24 infant prefolds and 4 X-Small Thirsties diaper covers.

We started cloth diapering when our daughter was 1 month old. We would have used cloth sooner - but we moved when she was only 11 days old; disposables were much simpler for that first month with all the transitions). I loved not having to buy disposables all the time, as we did the first month. We have since moved on to the premium sized prefolds and we’re already in Medium sized Thirsties diaper covers now!

In March 2009, I won the How Green Are You? contest from The Cloth Diaper Whisperer - and won a Limited Edition Fleece bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diaper in Ribbit Green, a bumGenius All-in-One One Size diaper with snaps in Grasshopper Green, a Blueberry Deluxe One Size diaper with Aplix in Green Diaper, and a pair of bumGenius Babylegs in Sweet Greens. I like the one size diapers because they always fit. I have had pilling issues with the fleece diapers because I wash them with my prefolds, however, they still hold in the mess!

I continued entering cloth diaper giveaways at The Cloth Diaper Whisperer and was surprised to discover I won again in October 2009; a Baby Beehinds One Size Hemp Diaper, a Baby Beehinds One Size Bamboo Diaper, and Baby Beehinds Wool Cover. I love these for overnight because they are much trimmer than doubling up on prefolds or even a fully stuffed pocket diaper. I’m slowly using fewer inserts to see just how trim I can get it without leaking.

Since receiving my pocket diapers, my husband has told me that he’d help out with changing diapers more if we had more of “those that go on like ‘regular’ (disposable) diapers.” My sister loved using the pocket diapers when we were home for Thanksgiving. In her words, she called them “cheater diapers” and said she might consider cloth diapers when she has kids, now that she’s tried more than just my prefolds!

In total, we’ve spent a little over $450 on cloth and only $175 on disposable in the last 19 months since my daughter was born. Considering we won't have to spend much more on cloth for another baby, I'd say it's well worth the investment, both the time entering giveaways and the money spent!

What I Grab and Why

I’ve noticed that lately I’ve been rather consistent on the type of diaper I grab at different diaper changes throughout the day. I tend to grab a pocket diaper, usually a bumGenius 3.0 or Blueberry first thing in the morning if Brendan, my 17 month old, hasn’t messed his overnight diaper. I have found it easier to knock off the solids with my diaper sprayer from a lined pocket, than the other types of diapers in my stash.

If he’s already done his big messy diaper for the day, I will move right on to my current favorite diaper…my Kiwi Pie Fitteds. I love the cute patterns, and the terrific fit they give me on my skinny little man. Since he is a rather heavy wetter, I usually double up the diaper with an additional insert between the diaper and the cover. Right now I have Kissaluvs Diaper Doublers, bumGenius Stay Dry Diaper Doublers, and Thirsties Fab Doublers, but I’m anxious to add some bamboo doublers to my stash due to their incredible absorbency. I finish up the diaper change with a waterproof cover, my current favorite being Thirsties and Wonder Wraps. My only wish is that they came in snaps – my little guy has become quite good at unhooking the Velcro – even when it’s concealed underneath his clothing! As soon as I can add more to my stash, I plan on trying a Blueberry One-Size Coverall – I love the cute patterns and the fact that they are available in snaps.

Another frequent go to diaper for daytime, as well as afternoon naps, are my Birdseye Cotton flat diapers. I have been folding one in the traditional style, and then adding a second one folded up as a doubler in the center of the diaper. I then lay it in the diaper cover and put it on Brendan. Sometimes I use a snappi, but most days my little guy can’t lay still during diaper changes, so I usually just skip that step.

At night time, I use my bumGenius 3.0’s exclusively. I stuff them with a Super Do Insert and we’re ready to go for 12 hours without leaks. I first purchased these inserts for use with my 3 year old for nighttime, but now that he’s night time trained, I have switched them to my youngest son’s night time diaper. I was hesitant at first due to the cost per insert, but as soon as I tried the first one, I bought two more right away. They are by far the best night time insert and worth every dollar.

About the Inventor...

Erin Kimmett, owner and designer of Thirsties, became infatuated with the sewing machine and all its wonders beginning at a very young age. Her grandmother, Pearl McBride, was a truly gifted craftswoman and eventually become a local celebrity in her artful expressions. Pearl's father passed away when she was just a baby leaving she and her mother to fend for themselves in a poverty-stricken tenement of New York City. Pearl was taught to sew professionally alongside learning her ABCs and tying her shoes. Though Pearl was only a child, she and her mother worked tirelessly together as sewers for a large clothing manufacturing company to try and make ends meet. Despite the fact that she was forced to sew in lieu of a formal education in order to keep bread on the table for herself, Pearl was enamored with the needle and thread and all the limitless possibilities of creativity it provided. As an adult, she continued to sew for both hobby and profession. Never was she seen without a needle and thread in her hand. In due time, she graciously passed along her gift and her unquenchable thirst for creativity and sewing to her granddaughter, Erin Kimmett.

Pearl has since passed, but her love for sewing is still expressed in Thirsties cloth diapers today. As a new cloth diapering mom herself, Erin Kimmett, couldn’t find a diaper cover that quite suited the needs of her baby, and therefore set out to create her own design of waterproof wraps. USA Diaper!

I knew I wanted Carson to wear red, white and blue for his first 4th of July, but by the time it dawned on me that a patriotic DIAPER would be adorable, it was too late to order one and get it in time for the 4th. So, I decided to get creative! We love Thirsties fab fitteds and Thirsties covers, so we had a red Thirsties cover. I decided to hit up the local Hobby Lobby and see if I could find a decorative patch to sew on. Well, ok. A decorative patch that my MOM could sew on, for me!! I found an aisle full of potential diaper decorations, but they were all iron on!! I wasn't sure how that would pan out, with the cover being PUL. I decided to try it out anyway, since I have quite a few covers.

When I got the cover home, and looked at the patches, I realized that they also had adhesive on the back, for a one time use! So, I decided to just stick them on the cover for the 4th of July, and voila! Instant patriotism displayed on the bum! For what it's worth, I got a few other iron on transfers, and DID try them on other Thirsties covers, and it worked great! The PUL did NOT melt. The covers won't be able to go in the dryer any longer though!

So here is Carson, proudly displaying his pride for the Red, White and Blue! Happy 4th of July!!

The Day We Wash

One of the most common reactions I get from people when I tell them I use cloth diapers (after "Eew!") is: "Isn't it an awful lot of work? I mean, all that laundry..." The answer is of course no, it's not much work at all. Certainly a lot less "work" than I'd have to do to afford disposables. The wash and care routine did take me a long time to develop though.

When I decided to try cloth diapers I didn't know anyone else who had used them in the past twenty-five years or so. I bought a couple of fitted diapers on a whim one day while I was checking out a local consignment store. I had no idea how to care for them, so I asked the owner of the store and she very helpfully wrote me out some detailed instructions.

Considering the fact that those instructions directed me to fill a wet bucket with cold water and vinegar, rinse diapers by dunking them in the toilet and use the strongest detergent I could find and bleach once a week, it's pretty surprising that I stuck with cloth diapers at all. I knew I wanted to move away from disposables though, so one day it finally occurred to me to type "cloth diapers" into a search engine to see if there were any other options and the world of modern diapering opened before me. There were far better diapers out there than the ones I was using, that's for sure! There were also some handy links for How To Care For Cloth Diapers, but more importantly, there were forums and groups for cloth diapering parents in places like Facebook where you can ask questions and get dozens of suggestions, ideas, answers and opinions. Apparently no one else had a big bucket of stinky diaper stew brewing in their bathroom, how interesting! After months of experimentation I have devised a system for washing cloth diapers that works perfectly for me and my family. I will share it with you now in the hopes that some poor clueless newbie will be able to learn faster than I did:

-In my bathroom, which is within arm's reach of the change table in my daughter's room, I have two cheap plastic trash bins from Wal-Mart with locking lids. I put fitteds, prefolds, inserts, wipes and doublers in the larger one and PUL covers and pockets in the smaller one to prevent them from trapping smells.

-Wet diapers go straight into the pails. Dirty diapers either have disposable liners removed and flushed or they are shaken over the toilet and rinsed under the foot-wash faucet in my shower. I never got around to buying a diaper sprayer, although I'd love one! Sometimes I spray them with BumGenius Odor Remover.

-I don't use pail liners. Every three days I dump both buckets into the washing machine and give them a cold rinse, then a hot wash with a bag of soap nuts or some Purex detergent and sometimes a few drops of tea tree oil, then a rinse.

-Every so often, if my diapers seem a little dingy or smelly, I put a scoop of oxy cleaner in the wash cycle.

-If the pails get smelly I rinse them out with water and a drop of tea tree oil while the diapers are washing.

-When the weather is nice I hang everything out to dry in the sun after running a quick tumble fluff cycle in the dryer to soften them up a little.

-When line drying isn't an option I hang covers, pockets and AIO's on a drying rack overnight and dry everything else in the dryer on medium heat with a few dryer balls.

-I wash my wool covers by hand once every two or three weeks with Eucalan and lay them out to dry.

-When everything is dry I pre-stuff my pockets and sort it all onto the change table shelves.

Basically it works out to two extra loads of laundry a week and maybe twenty minutes of folding and putting away (More if my nineteen month old wants to "help"). It's barely even noticeable since I'm doing laundry for six people anyway. I certainly wouldn't call it an inconvenience, and nothing smells as good as clean laundry hung to dry in the sunlight.

Against the Grain

You know I've always been the weird one in our family when it comes to doing certain things. I tend to go against the grain I suppose because sometimes it feels so good. My dream was to be a wife and mother (I know to some it seemed ridiculous because what would I do with the rest of my time?), I would rather sew something for half the price it would cost me to buy it, I decided to breastfeed (why wouldn't I just bottle feed?), I just am starting to home-school (what am I doing to my poor child?) and now I cloth diaper?!?!

One day when I was opening registries for my baby shower I came across disposable liners for cloth diapers and got me thinking. I started reading and reading and reading and boldly told my husband I would give it a shot, I don't think he was optimistic. All I we heard about cloth was negative and I had even been told that babies get more rashes with cloth! I sat there thinking about how for 3 years we had just thrown money away over and over with each diaper change just because its what you do, you just buy disposable diapers for your baby. I was flabbergasted when I read that to diaper one child from birth to potty trained can cost between $1500 to $3000 and it made me determined to try.

Shortly after my son was born I ordered some really inexpensive prefolds and diaper covers. They were thin and leaked if I didn't change it quickly but I liked it for some reason. I didn't seem like the burden everyone claimed it to be. I started doing more research on diaper quality and couldn't believe the variety there is and at the same time the prices of some of the diapers! For budget purposes I decided to go with Chinese prefolds and Wonderwrap one size covers. I bought my snappis and some Kushie disposable liners and was set! I haven't had a leak or rash with the cloth except for the time I put him back in sposies for an outing. I like to do the newspaper fold and the snappi makes it easy to clip securely, then I just put the cover over it and no leaks ever! I've since also gotten 3 one size BumGenius that we use at night and a thirsties cover that is wonderful because its so thin and roomy over the prefolds. The best part is that since my stash consists of premium size prefolds and one size covers and BGs my almost 2 year old can use them too.

Since I was on a roll with the diapers I thought about the wipes too and made myself a few dozen out of our older towels and receiving blankets and they work so much better than the disposable wipes especially with the aloe and caress soap mixture I use. They get so clean and are so fresh and their bottoms never dry out. It makes me feel like a super mom, lol.

It really makes me proud to be a part of a group of families that have decided that its important to be informed and do what is best for our children and ourselves. I just love holding my little son in his cloth diped bum. For right under $200 I got everything I would need to diaper him and my middle daughter until they learn to use the potty. There are so many other diapers I want to try but if I don't get a chance it still feels so good to say that I'm not taking thousands of dollars and putting them in the trash anymore.

My advice for anyone who thinks its terrible would be to try it for 2 days, you won't go back!

Works for our 2

I have three kiddos and two of them are in dipes, am I ready for my 2 year old to potty train? Well she is trying and I'm not going to push, she will get it before I know it. My son is 3 months now and since I ventured into cloth diapering because of him I figured why not with my daughter also (especially because her sposies are so much pricier).

Since I was buying to save money I decided to buy prefolds (PFs) and one size covers and some one size dipers. I have bleached chinese PFs (12) and unbleached chinese PFs (12) 4 snappis and 4 WonderWraps which I love, no leaks ever! I also have 1 med Thirsties cover and 1 small. My BumGenius OS 3.0 I reserve for overnight (my daughter is a heavy wetter), I have 6 in gender neutral and just added a blossom AIO for my daughter, just figured I could splurge on one girly dipe and I am hoping to add a few GroBabys into our mix.

Our stash works really well for 2 in diapers that are different ages because with the pfs you can fold them for each child depending where they need the most absorbancy. For my son I use the newspaper fold and for my daughter the jelly roll works great and then the BumGenius you can add the amount of inserts each kid needs for absorbancy. The best part is not having to make sure I have enough of each size in my diaper bag for outings or running to the store because I'm out of dipes. I do laundry every 2 days but I don't run out of clean ones because I have plenty of PFs. I can't imagine going back!
