Spotlight MOMs! *April and May 2009*

April Spotlight Moms

MEET KIRA

Name: Kira
Hometown: Inglewood, CA
Mom to: Logan Elizabeth (6 months)
Occupation: Physician
Stats: Woke up today at 1:30 am, 3:30 am, 6:00 am and finally 7:00 am – regularly fantasizes about sleeping until 9:00 am
Would be in big trouble if she lost... her baby’s Miracle Blanket – “We’d never get any sleep!”

Why did you decide to cloth diaper Logan?
I’m trying to “go green” as much as possible without becoming militant about it. I did a ton of research before Logan was born and it just felt like the right thing to do for her health and for the health of our vulnerable planet. I’d say it’s good for our budget, but since I keep finding new things to buy on Kelly’s Closet, I’m not so sure that’s true. Beware the CD addiction!

What is your favorite cloth diaper brand?
I’m torn between bumGenius and Fuzzi Bunz. I love that the BG’s will grow with baby, but the FB’s fit a little trimmer under her clothes and the snaps are harder for her to unfasten (yes, at 6 months, she is already trying to take off her diapers!). Both of them are great in terms of containing those explosive BF poopies! I’m looking forward to trying out the one-size FBs…the best of both worlds!

What is your one guilty pleasure? (OK, Kira, you can have two….)
I have 2: 1) Facebook and 2) The Cloth Diaper Whisperer (seriously, not just saying that because I’m being “Spotlighted”). One of the downsides of returning to work is that I don’t have time to get on the Internet anymore. Now I have to sneak in a few minutes before bedtime!

What is one thing Logan hates doing?
She hates when I try to excavate boogies from her nose! It’s like I’m on an archeological dig with those Q-tips!

What is one “mom invention” you wish you came up with?
Some sort of “surrogate” breast contraption that can soothe baby when you’re driving. Maybe it could be attached to a battery-operated breast pump and could feed baby while you drive…nothing worse than that helpless feeling you get when baby is crying and you can’t pull over! OK, don’t anyone steal my idea!

What is the best parenting advice you ever received?
“Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, they throw you a curveball. Don’t get fooled into thinking you’ve got a rhythm or a routine going… just go with the flow.” This advice was from a friend with two grown kids who both seem really well-adjusted, so I figure she must have done something right!

What’s the nicest thing you did for your husband since baby came along?
My husband says that nursing the baby throughout the night and allowing him to get uninterrupted sleep. He has to get up at 4:30 am so I guess I am pretty awesome to let him get his rest! Best wife ever!

What’s on the menu for dinner tonight?
Either beef stew or chicken in chipotle red sauce. I cook up a few things over the weekend so all hubby has to do is heat up leftovers when I get home from work.

MEET AMY

Name: Amy
Hometown: Frisco, TX
Mom to: Haven Elise (10 months)
Occupation: Stay-at-Home Mom

One Guilty Pleasure… Online window shopping

Can’t Leave Home Without… Veggie puffs

Why did you decide to cloth diaper Haven?
There are so many reasons to use cloth diapers that I honestly don’t know why people still use disposables! They are easy to take care of, soft and safe on your baby’s skin. Plus, they’re great on your pocketbook too (in the long-term anyway!).

What is your favorite cloth diaper brand?
Softbums are my go-to diapers. My baby isn’t the biggest baby, so the ultra trim fit of these diapers is really great. There is no stuffing either, so if I’m behind on my diaper laundry I always have these to go to. I just snap on a soaker and go!

How long have you been cloth diapering?
I’ve been cloth diapering since December 2008. I started cloth diapering Haven at seven months. Of course I plan on cloth diapering the other babies I plan on having too!

What three adjectives describe your baby?
Curious. Adventurous. Bossy.

What is one thing your baby hates doing?
Yelling and flailing may ensue when any of these are encountered: 1) Being still on the changing table; 2) Pooping; or 3) Waiting for food to be made.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
The ability to go without sleep. I would not get grumpy and get so much done!

What’s on the menu for dinner tonight?
Mexican Stack (Stack your plate in this order: Fritos, Rice, Ground Beef, Shredded Cheese, Salsa, and Olives….yum!!)

May Spotlight Moms

MEET SHANAKA

Name: Shanaka (aka “Mama B”)
Hometown: Rustburg, VA
Mom to: Caleb (4 years) and Kyle (15 months)
Occupation: Domestic Goddess in Training and SAHM
Guilty Pleasure: The Internet
Superpower: I wish I could simply wiggle my nose and make my house clean.

Three words that describes you… adaptable, determined and happy.

Three words that describes your baby… adventurous, hungry and silly

Could watch her baby… sleep forever (he’s so cute and quiet too!)

Wishes she invented… the On-the-Go Potty – I despise public restrooms (ick!)

Uses cloth diapers… because I like to save money

Favorite cloth diaper brand is… Drybees, particularly the fleece nighttime diapers because they work the best at night. So far so good!

MEET PAMELA

Name: Pamela
Hometown: Bel Air, MD
Mom to: Brian Andrew (16 months)
Occupation: Treasury Coordinator
Stats: Woke up at… 4:00 am
Wishes she woke up at… 8:00 am

Would be in trouble if she lost… my baby’s Goldfish crackers. It’s the only way I can keep Brian still on the changing table.

Wishes she invented… the Snack Trap cups. They are the best!

Has been cloth diapering for… 10 months

First learned about cloth… while looking for an environmentally-friendly alternative to disposables. Although it was a little scary and intimidating to take the first step, I quickly found out how incredibly easy and addicting it was.

Favorite cloth diaper… bumGenius because they’re well-made and trim-fitting!

Being green is important because… because it enables me to contribute to an important cause

And what’s on the menu for tonight?... Pork chops, garlic mashed potatoes, and green beans! Yummy!

Nice to "meet" you! I love hearing about other cloth diapering moms!

I still think it's interesting to see what everyone's favorite diaper is. It's so true that some diapers work great on one child, and not so good on another.
