Daddy's on Diaper Duty... Without Disposables!

“You want to do what?” were my husband’s first words when I shared the news with him that I wanted to cloth diaper. Our children at the time were four months old and a newly turned two year old and he had just got into the swing of things with disposables... now I wanted to switch to cloth on him?!? Thankfully, however, he always has a “mommy knows best” attitude when it comes to our boys. Reluctantly, he consented when I told him of the money savings we could have should we decide to switch. Since we had started being very diligent about getting out of debt and building up a savings - I'm certain visions of dollar signs danced in his head.

My first fluff purchase were hand-me-down flat diapers along with a few Snappi's and Thirsties diaper covers. Initially the diapering responsibilities fell solely on me. Folding, fastening and poop scraping were not his idea of a good time! Shortly after beginning our adventures in cloth diapering our two year old decided he no longer wanted to wear diapers (I attribute this to the cloth diapers - an awesome perk by the way). Potty training alone was enough change for daddy to handle at one time. The diapers were for mommy to handle.

As I slowly researched, experimented, and bought new cloth diapering accessories, my husband warmed up to cloth diapering. Using disposable liners to help "catch" bowel movements was a HUGE improvement for him, along with the first WAHM pocket diapers I received second-hand. In fact, once we had a few pocket diapers and All-in-One's in our stash, daddy became a cloth diapering pro! Of course buying a diaper with his favorite college football team on the bum didn't hurt in winning him over either. *sweet smirk*

I'm happy to say my husband is now 100% onboard with using cloth diapers; he even hesitates to put on the occasional disposable. He changes cloth diapers at home and on the road with ease. I am so proud of him! With baby number three on the way - mommy needs all the help she can get.

“They are not that bad!” is his response today, a year later, when curious people ask about our decision to cloth diaper. While I don’t think any daddy is thrilled about diapering in general, a “not that bad” is pretty good!

I think anyone who gives it an honest try finds it bot too hard.

After five children, my husband still has yet to master cloth diapers! No matter what type we have used he just struggles. Ever time he is up for diaper changes he opts for the Huggies Pure and Natural diapers.

My hubby is 100% on board, too. He'll even use a snappi and prefolds! :D

This is so similar to my experience. At first my husband was like, "Are you sure about this?" But he's totally come around. He doesn't seem to mind it at all. Of course, I stay home with the kids, so I still change the majority of the diapers. My husband has even used the sprayer a few times!!

Not that bad... is not that bad.
But my husband is all for cloth & tells everyone how much better cloth diapers are.
He can use prefolds too.
And, even my dad has a cloth diaper wash routine down, he likes me to leave diapers there for when we are visiting for the day or occasionally overnight.
My single, childless sister can tell you more about cloth diapers than a lot of moms could.
My family truly LOVES cloth diapers & we wouldn't have it any other way.

I am jealous... my husband wants nothing to do with cloth diapers. He thinks they smell and not worth it.

My husband falls somewhere right in the middle. He prefers disposables, but if I keep them hidden (which I do) he'll take off a pocket diaper (or all in one) and put on another if I'm not around or busy. Last night he even changed a poopie! Of course, he then just sets them on the bathroom counter for me to deal with, but I don't mind! :) With a newborn about to join our 20 month old ANY day now, I agree with the other commenter who said, "I can use all the help I can get!" :D

My husband always reaches for the prefolds too, because they are all EXACTLY the same (whereas some of my homemade fitteds have velcro, some don't, some are snappiable, some aren't, etc.). He has different folding preferences than me but they all work fine.

Now with two in diapers, my hubby seems to be changing more of our older boy's diapers, as long as there is no "whammies" ie. poop. But this is after having our 3rd. I guess he is just use to cloth diaper around.

I logged onto my computer, clicked the "Cloth Diaper Whisperer" and said "Man, that is one hot guy! Oh yeah, it is my HUSBAND" :o)

My DH is the same way!! He'll do prefolds, but prefers pockets.

You're lucky to have him changing diapers at all! My husband is all in favor of me cloth diapering. He doesn't ever change diapers unless I'm not at home. Those are great photos of your hubs with the kids, too! Very sweet.

My husband still asks me questions from time to time about what to do, but over all, he does an awesome job! He also loves that we save so much money!

My husband loves them too. We have a thing where we put a quarter in a jar (about the cost of a disposable) every time we change a diaper. We started when we figured that we'd reached the break even point, and every time we have to buy something new for the cloth (like a sprayer or an extra wet bag) we take it out of the jar. We're going to take a vacation with our cloth diaper money some day.

MY hubby does fine with the pocket diapers as long as I have them pre-stuffed for him...all he has to do is snap them on! But other types confuse him. Once he put a Thirsties cover with a microfiber insert in it on my son. Another time he forgot to put the cover over a fitted for bedtime. THAT was interesting! He also hates dealing with poop. But I shouldn't complain. He does pretty well for a man who thought I was crazy when I first talked about switching to cloth!

That's awesome. My husband is totally supportive too- except when out on the town, he doesn't want to bring dirty diapers home with him.

It definitely makes it so much easier when you have hubby's support! Mine is on the ball and super excited everytime we get a new one, for our baby arriving next year:-) Very encouraging to see the guys step up!
