He Was the One...

When I was pregnant with our darling son, my husband and I had discussing our finances and planning for buying a home as well as having a baby. We wanted to know what we could reasonably afford for a mortgage after the baby was born. As we started talking about the cost of diapers, my husband suggested we use cloth diapers to save money and help establish a more predictable budget.

While I had given some thought to the idea, I wasn’t so sure I wanted to deal with them and feared if we did use cloth diapers, the responsibility would be all on me. I needed my husbands help and I did not want to alienate him by going the route of cloth diapers. After all, he has never changed a diaper in his life; I could not imagine him wanting to do the “hard” stuff.

However, after my husband made the suggestion and ultimately expressed his complete willingness to change (and clean) the cloth diapers, I began researching how much they would cost.

Oh my... I did not realize how many options were available. I mentioned to a friend about our investigations into cloth diapering and to my surprise she shared with me all the joys of their cloth diapering experience.

Ultimately I purchased a few different types of diapers. My goal was to figure out what type of diaper I wanted to use. I also purchased a couple dozen prefolds, a few diaper covers and some Snappi’s. When our son arrived we were a little reluctant to get started... There was an unspoken fear that we couldn’t handle the cloth diapers.

Slowly we started using the prefolds/diaper covers and occasionally the other diapers we bought. Thankfully, my husband never complained and he changed his share of diapers. After a few weeks we weren’t very satisfied with the diaper we were using. Rather than spend more money on diapers that we wouldn’t be sure of - I bought some Goodmama seconds.

The first time my husband used the Goodmama One Size diapers he exclaimed, “Hun, these are win! We need more of these.” I took that as the green light to buy some more. I’ve been a cloth diaper advocate/addict ever since.

I have a huge wish list of diapers I would like to try next. Our most recent win are the Flip diapers. We tell everyone cloth diapers today are NOT our “parents’ cloth.” I continually learning about new styles of cloth diapers. When I have an urge to buy more fluff I have to remind myself why we started cloth diapering in the first place- to save money. My husband is great about using cloth, but he still rolls his eyes with each diaper I order. He probably wonders what sort of monster he created by suggesting cloth to begin with.

he is so cute... there are so many options and what works for one family doesn't for another. I have been doing the same and testing different types.

I have to constantly remind myself that we started to save money too! After you start cloth diapering, you just want to try out so many different kinds.

Very new to cloth diapering, and I too are trying like one of every kind. Heard so many good things about goodmama, but they are a little out of our price range. I seem to like AIO or pockets better than fitted and prefolds (too much trouble working with a cover.

Cute story! I started out as a 100% BumGenius girl and add some new diapers along the way. I hope to eventually add some Goodmama's into my rotation.

We did not use cloth with our first daughter, and made the decision to try it out now with our second daughter. Our first real "order" will be arriving in just a few days. I started simple just like you did and looking forward to figuring out what types works best for our little family. Great post!

It totally is an addiction, isn't it? I never realized how CDing sucks you in like it does until I was making a wishlist of things for my son to poo in lol!

The number of options is very overwhelming in the beginning. It does help to have the resource of friends to ask questions of, but I'm still discovering new diaper brands all the time.

Your little guy is adorable.

We wanted to cd our first but didn't find anything that worked for us so we used disposables. Our newborn son developed a terrible diaper rash at just afeq days old and nothing seemed to help. We decided to look into cd as a temp solution. There were so many choices that we were overwhelmed. The staff at our local baby boutique showed us several options we decided to start out with Econobums because they were a cost effective. We liked them and decided to continue so we bought 2 Flip covers. I was in LOVE. I have been telling everyone I know about how easy they are. And I want to stock up on them but they are sold out and backordered everywhere.

What an adorable little boy! I love the picture with the snappi in his mouth! Hilarious!!!

And I agree with you on that last part. I've become such a cloth diaper addict that I wonder if we really are saving money because I just love buying them (even though our stash is quite sufficient at this point)

My husband was the one who wanted to do cloth too-- for environment, not economics. But I am so glad now that I listened!

Cloth diapering is such an addiction! And Goodmama's super cute prints do not help! We have a little bit of everything, but I am always working at perfecting my stash!

He is so cute. We don't know how we got so lucky. Just wanted to point out he put the Snappi in his mouth all on his own- I was just lucky enough to snap the photo.

It is good to hear about cloth diapering Daddys! My husband too has never changed a diaper in his life. His first diaper change will be cloth! He is totally sold on using cloth, and I cannot wait to see him use them. We are going with the Gro Babys, hopefully we will love them as much as I think we will! Bay #1 makes an arrival in April!

We're always telling people the same thing . . . "Today's cloth diapers, are not like yesterday's!"

That's so funny, my hubby was all behind this as well, I wish we had tried a bunch of different kinds, I'm not unhappy with what we have, but it would be nice to have some prints and such, which we don't currently have!
