Out On A Line

My favorite way to dry my cloth diapers is definitely hanging them outside in the sun. It’s the best of both worlds, the sun bleaches stains out, kills residual bacteria, and I save on electricity. Not to mention I love looking outside at a colorful line full of fluff – is there anything better?

Right now my family is living in a rental home while waiting for our old home out of state to sell. The yard is quite steep and there really isn’t a good place for me to easily set up my laundry line. With two little boys running around I don’t like the idea of having to leave them alone in the house while I hike up and down the basement stairs to reach the backyard and a laundry line.

Not long after we moved in I began wracking my brain for solution to the problem. I looked out the back door while sitting down for breakfast one morning and wondered if there was a way to rig up my umbrella style laundry line onto the small deck just off the breakfast nook. That very afternoon I pulled my laundry line out of the garage and hauled it out on the deck. Using some Velcro straps, I attached the pole to the wood railings on the deck and TA-DA, problem solved!

Of course, I should mention that there are woods behind the house and we don’t have any next door neighbors so no one will see my little rigged up laundry line…I wouldn’t dare try this if someone else could see it. I don’t want to be one of “those people” that people secretly talk about when you’re not around.

Now if I could only get the temperature to warm up and the sun to come out of hiding from behind the clouds so much. But alas, this is still better than those cold, snowy winters I left behind back in Wisconsin!

I can't wait for summer. Western Oregon has two seasons. In one the sun shines. In the other, longer, one, the rain shines.

We live in Chattanooga, which every spring and summer gets a lovely yellow coating from all the pollen in the air. Our cars, driveways, patio furniture...you name it, it's yellow. I haven't tried line drying because I'm afraid of the pollen coating the diapers. Any thoughts?

I assume that we *are* "one of those people" - we have the same sort of clothes line on our deck all summer long, in an upper-middle-class suburb....and it has diapers on it every other afternoon :)

That is awesome. I love that line. I need to do something like that because we have a deck out back and a steep backyard. Great use of the space.

Lol, I have a make-shift line as well! Mine is a retractable dog leash that I strung from one corner of the house to the other! It is nice though because I can let it retract back to hanging on the side of the house when it isn't being used.

I am so happy it is summer.....well almost!

I can't wait until I can hang my cd's outside. I had my husband put up a clothes line last summer for me, but I only got to use it a few times. I am really looking forward to seeing my baby's cute fluff hanging out to dry.

We are in a rental right now and had to rig up a way to line dry diapers. Isn't it SO worth it though! Love your post!

so jealous...my community association doesn't allow clothes lines...so, my solution instead is to lay a sheet on the grass and cover it with my diapers--it's worth it even though i have to go out and flip them...cause there's nothing better than a beautiful white sun-bleached diaper!

Right now I have a collapsable drying rack, that i brought from Kmart a few years back. I hang all my diapers on that. I live in an apt so I dont want to pay 1.50 every other day to dry my diapers. I hear it's better to line dry anyways.

I am trying to figure out a way to hang my diapers to dry outside without drawing to much attention. In the end I will probably just accept the attention it might create because it is better for the environment and it is good for my cloth.

I think diapers on the line is the cutest thing! I'm so happy warm weather is back so I can see my fluff flap in the breeze again!

Definitely a creative solution! Whatever it takes to save on electricity, right?! Line drying is great for removing stains, naturally disinfecting, and helping cloth diapers last longer. I LOVE it!
