A Cautious Tale of Cloth Diaper “Bargains”

When we were considering trying to conceive, being the analytical/engineer-type that I am, I started researching baby products and best buys. In my online searching, I came across the FuzziBunz website. I thought they were so darn cute and the thought of a baby without diaper rash had me knowing immediately that I was going to cloth diaper. My cloth diaper purchasing adventures began 9 months before we were even pregnant! LoL!

I love eBay and I love a bargain, so that’s the first place I looked hoping to find some great deals. I sure did! I ordered 10 new FuzziBunz Perfect Size Pocket diapers for $140, including shipping. The seller had a great rating and I was getting $4 off per diaper. I was so excited to get my first fluffy mail. I laid them out on the bed, admired the colors, and dreamed of using them as soon as we had a baby to use them on! Now, remember me mentioning these were purchased 9 months before I was even pregnant? Well, it wasn’t until about 18 months later that I pulled them out to be washed. By then, I had found Kelly’s Closet and began purchasing new diapers there as well. I love their sales, free shipping, etc. As soon as I pulled those “eBay Special” diapers out, I realized they were in fact not so special. They were fakes! Sure enough, my deal was too good to be true! The snaps were weak, the colors were “off”, and the inserts were thin and cheap. I was in shock because the FuzziBunz tag was impeccably authentic-looking. I had no way of knowing unless I had inspected them again when I started buying from a legitimate retailer like Kelly’s Closet.

After lots of research and contacting that seller, it soon became apparent that I would be eating the loss. The window for complaints was closed. The diapers aren’t really FuzziBunz so the manufacturer warranty does not apply. I was stuck with 10 crummy diapers for which I more than overpaid. My quest to save a buck just did not pay off. From that point on, eBay was for buying used video games for my husband, not diapers.

It was a hard loss for a master-bargain-finder like myself… and the hit to the budget was felt pretty hard. The lesson was learned… the hard way. I wasted time searching, lots of money, and then more time trying to recover the money. Some things, especially those things that are closest to your baby’s bum, just have to be the highest quality, guaranteed!

The peace of mind I have now buying my cloth diapering products guaranteed from Kelly’s Closet is very satisfying. One of the best parts though, besides getting cute fluffy goodness in the mail, is that I’m still getting great deals! For example, FuzziBunz had a cyber sale and Kelly’s Closet always gives customers a discount on bulk orders, so I saved above and beyond what the cyber sale offered! I also earned diaper dollars rewards to save money on a future order! Can you say sweet?!? It’s nice to know that I can in good conscience order the things my daughter needs and still afford to splurge thanks to great deals and free shipping. I love Kelly’s Closet. Need I say more?

Diapers are the one thing I won't buy on Ebay or Etsy - what you see isn't necessarily what you get in terms of performance and I had a few bad experiences early on that taught me to stick to authorized retailers!

I remember the FB knock offs. There was a big post about it on Diaperswappers a long time ago. I can't believe people have nothing better to do than knock off diapers of all things. ugh.

wow, that's kinda scary! but glad to know you didn't give up.
how does one know whether the bunz are truly Fuzzi or not?

I also bought a couple of diapers on ebay before my guy was born.. they were not fuzzibunz, but I was so excited. Then as I used them the velcro came off some, the elastic was streched out, and not such a good deal...

What a bummer to end up with knock-offs! Sure glad you found kellyscloset.com! :)

I was scammed on ebay with a diaper sprayer! It was just poor quality, I didn't know people really tried to fake brands though.

I'm always torn as to whether it's better to buy new or try to find a "deal" used. Most used items labeled as in excellent or good condition are only marked down a few dollars a diaper. And of course, occasionally, they are not in such great condition. With this in mind, I'd rather spend my cash on brand new diapers from sites that offer free shipping. With all the economical "new" options out there (like Flips, Smartipants and the faithful prefold) I think I'm saving myself time and hassle in searching, and trying to deal with other's stains and stinkies.

Wow, I didn't know there were people out there selling "fake" diapers under name brands! I will be careful with my cloth diaper purchases from not on.

I bought a cloth diaper made in China for pretty cheap off of ebay. The insert was pretty cheap but the shell works great. However, after reading this post, I won't be looking for any used cloth diapers on ebay!
