When I asked her if I should get her diapers as a shower gift (hoping she’d say yes) or something off her registry, I was enthused and relieved by her answer—“cloth diapers!” I put a lot of thought into what to get her. I would have liked to buy her an entire stash but had to keep it around $50. Do I go with a couple covers and decent supply of prefolds, flats, or Flip inserts? Or do I get fewer diapers that are more user-friendly for a newbie cloth diaperer?
I took the less is more approach, and here is what I ended up buying: one Thirsties Duo Diaper, one FuzziBunz perfect size (I thought the FB one size may seem too complicated with the adjustable elastic, even though it’s really not), one Flip cover and stay dry insert, and a pack of CuteyBaby flushable liners since inevitably everyone asks, “What about the poo?” Of course I took advantage of a Kelly’s Closet coupon, which was a good one—a free one size diaper, minimum $22 value. I think my friend said she received a Rumparooz which I was hoping, as I love mine. So in the end, my friend got four “nice and easy” diapers and a pack of liners. Of course four won’t get her too far but with the variety of brands it will give her a glimpse into how easy cloth diapering is, then when she wants to take the next leap of prefolds or similar she’ll have the confidence to do so. Even her husband is now on board with trying them after seeing them in person—no plastic pants or safety pins like he envisioned.
Best of all, it fed my diaper addiction, but this time it was husband-approved (though I did go slightly over budget…oops). And being a practical person, I feel better knowing that I didn’t chip in for a $500 glider or get some obscure item that seems critical when you’re pregnant but really has no use (I won’t single any out, but you know them when you see them). Compared to the cost of most typical baby registry items, diapers are cheap and will get the most use by far!

What a great gift! I think I'd be scared to buy something like this for just anyone, even though we've encouraged quite a few people to try. Of course, one of the best gifts we got at a shower was a pack of prefolds--we weren't planning on prefolds when we got into CDing, but like my friend said, there is ALWAYS a use--and yep! They stuff, they do spit rag duty, the baby chews on them... holy cow! Best gift ever! :) Now, all those newborn fancy dresses? Not so much. :)
I did a shower gift of cloth a couple of months ago too! I gave 2 one size pocket diapers and a wetbag. It was such a fun thing to do!
That's a fantastic start for her to cloth diaper! I wish I had that sort of gift when I was expecting! I find it interesting you mentioned a $500 glider... as the one I simply HAD to have was nearing $600, yet I never had a use for a glider before I was expecting. -cough- ((In the end, I settled for a La-Z-Boy that was the same cost but had a lifetime warranty... and it was a rocker recliner, which was a life saver when I became too big to sleep comfortably in my bed!))
I asked for cloth diapers on my registry and was thrilled to receive them. As a newbie I'm glad people got me easy AIO and a couple pockets. As a newbie covers, flats, fitteds, prefolds.. those were all too overwhelming. Once she grew out of her newborn size I was able to go as complicated or as simple as I felt like, all while keeping my sanity as a first time mom and a new CDer!
Back in 2005 we were told that a relative was going to use cloth diapers to save money, so we bought stuff for them and it was NEVER. USED. 2 years later I actually asked for them for my baby shower and the only person that bought them for me was my wonderful mom.
Such a great idea! I think that I will ask future Mom to be's if they would be interested in trying out cloth. What a fun present to put together.
we are having our second baby in june, a boy, and i'm thinking about trying cloth diapers for the first time. i would love to receive them as a shower gift. i think it's a wonderful gesture. great post!
That is a great gift! What a great way to get her started on Mommyhood!
I hope someone does this for me! :) What a great friend!
What a cute idea for a shower! I love how cloth diapering is coming "back in style". So Kelly's Closet offers a coupon for a free diaper?! I'm trying to find anything for free anywhere I can. I want to do cloth but am not in a postion to buy anything! (Which is what GOT me into cloth... when the disposables ran out and so did the money, I thought, "How dumb NOT to have reusable CLOTH diapers!")
I like to give people a couple of covers and six inserts. I tell my friends who use disposables that these can be used whenever they are just around the house one day to save them at least $1.50 each time the use the whole stash. i feel like trifold inserts are so un-intimidating. when people see that the laundry isn't really so scary, they can try whatever kind they want after that.
