Fluff Friday 306

Let me begin this romance story with the tale of how I met the new diaper I love. I went to this year’s Pinellas County Great Cloth Diaper Change (GCDC); sponsored by Kelly’s Closet, Molly Suds and Dirty Diaper Laundry. Moms from the area joined together to be part of a worldwide endeavor to make a Guinness World Record.

On April 26th 2014, the GCDC united caregivers across 18 countries to achieve the new world record for the most people changing diapers in 24 hours at multiple venues. A total of 8,459 babies were changed into a cloth diaper. The record is a great achievement toward global awareness for cloth diaper use.

At the GCDC event, I had the opportunity to make a donation to the Real Diaper Association in exchange for raffle tickets. I was excited to try my luck, for a good cause, at winning a myriad of cloth diaper goodies.

Well, who knew?! I was a lucky gal that day and took away a new Thirsties One Size Pocket Diaper. I have to admit I was pretty excited to win something—I hardly ever win prizes—but I did not know that the Thirsties One Size Pocket Diaper would become my new favorite in my cloth diaper stash.

There are a few reasons why I am so in love. First I love the fit. It is slimmer in comparison to other major cloth diaper brands. This narrow design allows for a more natural leg position, so those parents who worry about hip dysplasia this may be the cloth diaper for you. Also, the fit is less “fluffy” and looks much better under stretchy pants in comparison to other pocket diapers. The elastic legs are designed for a nice snug fit and have gussets to keep solids from leaking out while the waist has double snaps for added security.

Another great feature is the double open pocket ends. That’s right the “pocket” is a sleeve that opens at each end. The dual opening makes it easy to load, allowing you to grab it out of the basket and load without looking, with the ability to pull the insert into position from the opposite end. This feature is totally amazing for another reason, you can simple throw the Thirsties One Size Pocket Diaper into the laundry and the insert will agitate itself out—no pulling out the dirty insert, no inserts bunched at the end of a cleaned pocket diaper. You mean my diapers are going to get cleaner without me having to do any more work? Awesome!

Finally, the Thirsties One Size Pocket Diaper comes with two inserts for the user to adjust the absorbency for her needs. This diaper is designed for babies 8-40 lbs. (0-36 months). The newborn insert is 100% polyester-microfiber terry, and the second insert is a full size hemp cotton which combined makes a total of 8 layers of absorbency (I like using both since, as you may already know, hemp is the most absorbent insert material but micro fiber is best against baby’s skin—keeping her dry). How can it get better? These inserts snap together, allowing for various configurations, and will not separate when agitated in the washing machine, but loose enough for proper cleaning. You never have to hunt for your matching inserts again.

If the above reasons haven’t convinced you that the new Thirsties One Size Pocket Diaper is the way to go, here is a list of reasons why you should love Thirsties too!
  •  It’s a Family owned business
  • Their diapers are manufactured in the US
  • They use green shipping and printing practices
  • They recycle 100% of their fabric scraps
  • Their warehouse/offices are 100% powered by wind energy
  • All carbon created in the transport of Thirsties products is 100% offset by Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)
The Thirsties One Size Pocket Diaper truly has become my number one favorite diaper in my stash. I can’t believe I would have never tried it unless Kelly’s Closet and Thirsties so generously donated it as a raffle prize for the Pinellas County Great Cloth Diaper Change. You have to try this diaper for yourself. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

My New Favorite Diaper and Soon to be Your Favorite Too

One of the first cloth diapers I tried on my daughter Charlie was a Thirsties Duo Wrap with a padded prefold. I loved it. It was trim, unlike a lot of the one size diapers I’d tried, and the double gussets contained that lovely, runny EBF poo very well. Even my husband loved it! The Duo Wrap was uncomplicated, and that certainly helped turn him on to cloth. (Simplicity, I quickly learned, was vital if I wanted my spouse to do any of the diaper changing.) However, our tiny newborn suddenly turned into a tall, skinny infant. She outgrew the rise very quickly and way before the 18 lb weight limit that comes with size one Thirsties. So, it was with great sadness that I packed up my Duo Wraps, tucked them away for a future child, and vowed to never again fall in love with a two-size system lest my heart be broken again. (That might be an exaggeration, but we’d been so close.)

And then Thirsties announced a new one size pocket diaper and I threw all my money at them. Okay, maybe not all of it. Had to save some for shoes.

The Thirsties One Size Pocket Diaper is everything I might possibly want in a diaper rolled into one neat and adorable package. Everything I loved about the sized system – double gussets, trim fit – is still present in the new design!

Thirsties has also kept a few of the fantastic features from their discontinued Duo Diaper. The sleeve style pocket allows the insert to be put in from the front or the back, which also means it agitates out in the wash. (Huge bonus for me. Removing wet and dirty inserts ranks right above going to the dentist for a filling on my list of favorite things.) The insert itself consists of two parts – a newborn microfiber insert and a full sized hemp insert. The microfiber can be used alone for newborns and small infants, or the inserts can snap together to provide extra absorbency for heavy wetters. The hemp insert can also be folded down slightly and snap to fit the pocket on the smallest rise setting! I personally like using the inserts together. Fast absorbing microfiber coupled with super absorbent hemp is my favorite combination to use in pockets. It’s great for naptime and long car rides, and really adds an extra layer of protection against those dreaded compression leaks. I love that Thirsties has included both so that I don’t have to add anything to this diaper to make it absorbent enough for my baby!

My one, small complaint about Thirsties’ foray into the world of one size diapers is the size of the pocket. It’s very, well… small. It’s narrow and can be difficult to stuff on the smallest rise. I definitely have to pre-stuff these for my husband. But if that’s the price I have to pay for a great fitting, trim, and otherwise incredible diaper, I can live with it!

While Thirsties doesn’t have the vast rainbow that other brands are known for, they have several vibrant, beautiful gender neutral colors and prints. (Charlie, who is 10 months old and 16 pounds, is sporting Aqua while we wait with increasing impatience for Spring-time weather.) I’m also a big fan of their trademark white trim. I think it gives their diapers a very clean, modern look, and makes the bright colors really pop!

The Thirsties One Size Pocket Diaper is available from Kelly’s Closet in both snaps and newly revamped hook and loop, as well as several colors to help you and your baby get over the cold weather blues!

Thirsties One Size Pocket - Possibly the Perfect Diaper

This blog post originally posted on September 11, 2010. With the recent after-math of Hurricane Sandy we thought we would re-post for you:

The renewal of hurricane season and active storms has made me re-evaluate my emergency plans and preparations. I have given thought to water supply, food, batteries, important documents, and more...but with my decision to use cloth diapers exclusively, and the disappearance of the very last disposable diaper, I have new plans to make. Part of my preparation will no longer include picking up an extra pack of disposable diapers. It is important to me to find an environmentally safe emergency plan.

How will I wash my stash if we were to lose power and water? What happens when I run out of clean cloth diapers? Do I really plan on washing everything by hand with a limited water supply? Many questions began spinning through my head, and I realized I hadn't planned for conditions without a washing machine.

In formulating my plan, I slowed down and asked myself the following questions:
  • How many diapers does my child use in a day?
  • How often will I wash diapers? (As a load, or individually?)
  • Do I have enough diapers to rotate clean/dirty diapers in time for them to be dry and ready?
  • Where will I wash the diapers? (In a bucket? The sink?)
  • Do I have extra needed accessories (diaper rash cream, laundry detergent, wipes, liners)?
  • Where will the waste water be disposed?
  • How will the process maintain sanitary conditions? (Hand-washing/disinfecting?)
  • How long will I be prepared to be without power/water?
My stash of cloth diapers includes mostly One Size FuzziBunz and bumGenius, with a few Rumparooz, and Thirsties. I also have 3 Bummis Whisper Wrap Covers which I use with a Kissaluvs Hybrid One Size Contour (I really need to get more inserts!). I have enough diapers to last 3 or 4 days, but from experience realize that it is necessary to plan for a week or more in an emergency situation. My planning decision revolved mainly around the question of hand-washing diapers that I already have (counting on enough extra water to the supply to enable this), and/or finding an alternative solution. Standard disposables for me will be an absolute last resort, and I won't stock them.

Kelly's Closet offered me a very appealing solution: GroVia Bio-Soakers! With this option, I can reuse a cover multiple times and replace the insert as needed...without a significant water resource impact (I'll only need to clean covers). I will always have my other cloth diapers and inserts, as additional options available in my emergency kit. Even if I ran out of Bio-Soakers (my first choice for avoiding a heavier wash load), I will still have a wonderful supply of fluff to wash and reuse. GroVia also makes Bio-Diapers, an alternative to disposable diapers that may be another option.

Cloth diapers are actually a perfect solution for emergency situations. Long before washing machines, cloth was THE only option, and mothers (and fathers) made it work. Granted, emergencies can be slightly different without a known unlimited source of water, but the same principles apply. Reliance on modern convenience is not necessary to making cloth diapers effective. The biggest added bonus is not having the worry of a panicked sell-out of all disposables at the grocery store...my cloth will always be right there.

I'll be ordering some GroVia shells and Bio-Soakers to test drive this solution. In the meantime, I may come up with other ideas, but at least I'm on the right track for being prepared in an emergency with cloth diapers. Are you?

The first time I tried cloth diapers, I used a Gerber pre-fold with a snapi under a size one Thirsties cover. It worked perfectly. There were no leaks and changing was no big deal. What I was not prepared for was the wet prefold. I know it sounds silly, but at the time I was at the changing table with a wet prefold and nowhere to put it. Like many of us, I am a “googler”. Yet for some reason I did not turn to it to answer this question. Was it baby brain? All I knew was that my mother used disposables. My mother in law used a diaper service and I remembered her stories of hauling a wet pail downstairs. I did not like the idea of having to produce a wet pail that instant. I thought: “What is a wet pail? A bucket of water and soap?” In any case, I changed my baby into a disposable diaper and I wrapped the wet prefold in a used grocery bag and threw it out. Yes, people. Guilty as charged. In my defense, I washed the Thirsties cover.

Fast-forward one year and I am pregnant with baby number two. Due to many breastfeeding problems and hormonal issues, I know baby number two will be formula fed. Baby number one is a toddler under two years old and not potty trained. I will have two babies in diapers and one that needs formula! The idea of spending that kind of money every month was just terrifying. I started researching cloth diapering in earnest. Paying most attention to what to do with the poop and the wet diapers. Thankfully, the wet pail is mostly a thing of the past (phew!) and a dry pail is just fine. I bought a Planet Wise liner and a “tall” plastic trash can with a lid. Now I would not throw out a wet prefold! The poop is not a problem, since a toddler’s poop rolls out of the diaper into the toilet. No need to rinse most of the time. I am sure this will change with a newborn, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

A local store stocks cloth diapers. After much pondering, I bought two Flips with stay dry inserts and three Econobums with hemp inserts. I went home and prepped the diapers. By the time I was done, it was nighttime. We were having a lot of trouble with my son’s disposables leaking overnight. In fact, we were using disposables a size larger and yet sometimes he would soak through the diaper! I read everywhere that hemp absorbs very well so we tried it. Why not? I was dealing with leaky diapers at least once a week. Another one would not be a big deal. That first night, my son used a Flip cover with a stay dry insert over an Econobum hemp prefold. The next morning I had a happy toddler that had not leaked! And to my surprise he was dry. I could not believe that the stay dry insert actually stayed dry! Call me skeptical, but I just could not believe that cloth could do that. The inserts went into the dry pail (not the trash). I wiped the Flip cover and put on another hemp prefold. I was back in the store that day and bought more Flip stay dry inserts. I have even added cloth wipes!

I quickly supplemented my growing stash with new bumGenius pocket diapers and bought some used Happy Heinys. This way I don’t have to wash every day. The dry pail does not smell like I thought it would. Pregnant ladies out there, you know how the nose changes! I cannot smell a thing with the lid closed. My husband does most of our nighttime routine therefore, we use the bumGenius pocket with two inserts overnight. I have no leaks to report. Gladly, by now I know I could also use a Flip or an Econobum with two stay dry inserts get no leaks either.

I find cloth-diapering fun and I wish my son was younger and that the weather was warmer so that he could run around in his cute diaper. Soon a new addition will come home and I will be able to do just that! That reminds me I need to get her some coordinating baby legs!

Fluff Friday 141

My newborn cloth diapering experiments continue…can you tell how much I’m loving this?  At 6 weeks and roughly 11 ½ lbs he is still comfortably in the Happy Heinys.  The Bum Genius AIO Size XS and FuzziBunz XS Pockets are just starting to get a little snug, but still work very well.  I have added a couple of new diapers to my routine: Applecheeks Size 1, Thirsties Cover Size XS, Blueberry Mini Deluxe and Tots Bots Tiny Fit.  He has completely grown out of the Rumparooz Lil Joeys and the premie prefolds so they have been retired.

Of this new group of diapers the Tots Bots Tiny Fit is my favorite.  It is a great fit with room to grow, the inside is super soft against him and the fact that you don’t have to unstuff them prior to washing is a great bonus.  We haven’t had any leaking though it is a very trim diaper.  I give a definite thumbs-up on this diaper.  It has prompted me to take a look at the Tots Bots Easy Fit for down the road when he’s wearing one size diapers.

The Blueberry Mini Deluxe is an incredible diaper.  It is very similar to the Happy Heiny in that it is a mini one-size.  It has snaps to adjust the rise like a one-size, but it is just smaller (hence the name mini).  You can start with this diaper in the hospital and it seems like it will fit for quite a while (it claims up to 15lbs, I’m thinking I will be able to push it longer than that).  It is very absorbent, fits great around the belly and thighs and never leaked.  It’s definitely a favorite, though I would love the option of aplix both for fit and ease when fumbling around mid-slumber during the night.

I’ve previously asserted that I am not a prefold and cover kind of gal, but I have to say I’m really liking the Thirsties cover.  I have paired this with a newborn prefold and can appreciate that it was leak-free and inexpensive.  My favorite, however, is to use it with the Thirsties Duo Insert Size 1.  This insert has tons of layers to absorb, a stay-dry top layer and it unsnaps for quick drying time.  Keeping in mind that we are working with EBF poops, he has dirtied the cover when using the insert instead of the prefold, but he has never leaked out of this cover.  For those who want to keep newborn cloth diapering costs down I would highly recommend this cover with either insert option.

The Applecheeks is a different kind of diaper.  You can use it as a cover or a pocket and as a pocket you do not have to unstuff it prior to washing.  It is generous in size so it will definitely fit him for a while and the pocket is big enough to stuff with whatever you would like.  I found the Applecheeks Bamboo 3-pli insert to be a bit bulky for such a little guy so I just stuff it with a small size microfiber insert and a bamboo booster and it works great.  The bonus, for boys in particular, is the elastic on the front waistband of the diaper as well as the back to really help prevent leaks.  This diaper seems like it will fit for quite a while, but it is kind of pricey compared to other covers or pockets.  Though it’s a good diaper, I would definitely have a list of several others I would purchase more of before this one.

At six weeks in I feel that my preferences have been a mix of very predictable (my love for pockets remains strong even for newborns) and a bit unpredictable (really enjoying the Thirsties Cover, Duo Insert and even dabbling in prefolds).  What has been quite surprising to me, however, is the lack of blow-outs with all of these diapers.  I have not-so-fond memories of many, many blow-outs with disposables when my daughter was a young infant.  The cloth has held up beautifully against breastfed poops and impressed me yet again.

Cloth Diapering at Six Weeks

Saying that anyone can cloth diaper by using flats and hand washing the diapers is one thing, doing it is another.  I’ve collected all of the things that I think I am going to need for the Flats Challenge.

First off, birdseye flat diapers:
I am using twelve Swaddlebees flats and six OsoCozy unbleached flats.  I bought the Swaddlebees because I am a sucker for prints, even if they are going to end up under a diaper cover.  To add extra absorbency for naps and overnight, I am going to use the OsoCozy flats pad folded as doublers since they are a little bit smaller than the Swaddlebees.

Next up the covers:
I have no shortage of covers but since I had to choose just five, I wanted the ones that have proven to work the best.  I am choosing a Bummis Super Brite wrap, a Thirsties  Cover, a Kissaluvs kissa’s one size cover, a Blueberry one size, and a Hiney Liney Versa cover.  The Hiney Liney is my wildcard cover.  I just recently found out about them and bought a cover specifically for the flats challenge.

Hand Washing
I really love the idea of the camp washer so I ran out and bought all of the supplies to make it.  A friend was even able to find me a plunger at the Dollar Store, thus making it even less expensive to make the camp washer.  Once it was made, I did some test runs with mediocre success.  The rubber plunger has such a strong smell, I couldn’t figure out if I was getting the diapers clean.  Somehow I can’t tell the difference between the smell of ammonia and the smell of cheap rubber.  So I have decided to do a cold rinse in the camp washer, dump the water, add hot water, agitate the diapers with Rockin’ Green in the camp washer using the smelly plunger and then do all of my final rinsing in a basin in the kitchen sink.  I’m rinsing in the sink to make sure that all of the soap is out and also to rinse off the smell of the plunger.  Since my hands are going to end up touching very hot water (we have our hot water heater set dangerously high) and freezing cold water, I am using my Blue Meanies.  (My fancy dishwashing gloves that I registered for when we got married and never used).

Once washed and rinsed, the diapers are going on to my drying rack.  I just have a simple drying rack from Target so the diapers don’t fit perfectly.  I need to use backs of chairs, towel bars and the dishwasher and oven handles for additional space.  There will be diapers all over my kitchen while they are drying.

Strategy
I plan on washing the diapers every other night after the kids go to bed.  This will leave enough time for the diapers to dry before they wake up in the morning.  Some of the diapers on the inside of the drying rack are still going to be damp by morning, so I am just going to put the whole drying rack on my kitchen island until they are dry.

Extra Credit
The extra fun and excitement portion of the flats challenge is that we are traveling from Boston to Philadelphia for Memorial Day weekend to visit a friend.  So we will be traveling with flats and washing somewhere else.  I think I will have to boil water to use in the camp washer outside and rinse the diapers outside with a hose while we are visiting because I don’t want our hosts to feel uncomfortable that dirty diaper water would end up anywhere in their home.

My name is Kathy and I am 29 years old from Akron, Ohio.  I became a mom on May 18, 2010 when I gave birth to a healthy little 5lb 7oz baby boy named Noah.  I began cloth diapering when he was 3 months old and I have been completely addicted ever since.
I originally started cloth diapering because a friend of mine cloth diapers her little girl and I loved the idea of saving the environment, money, and my little ones bum from chemicals:)  I quickly became addicted to all of the different styles and accessories that go along with cloth diapering.  My main diaper is a Fuzzibunz perfect size but I've fed my addiction and expanded my collection to include Grovia, Kissaluvs fitted, Thirsties duo diapers, fab fitted, and duo wraps, hemp prefolds, and stay dry duo inserts.  I LOVE my fuzzibunz hanging dry bag because it unzips at the bottom so it does not fill with water during washing.  I also love my Budda Bunz wool dryer balls because they really speed up the drying time in the winter when I dry in the dryer.

In the summer time I love to hang dry my diapers and I get so excited to just smell everyone as I take them down because they smell sooooooooo good:)  I never thought I would use cloth wipes but I LOVE using those too and it's so much easier than I thought it would be.  My favorite are grovia.  I also make my own cloth wipes solution.  I use Honey Bun Drops Cloth Diaper Wipes Solution and I just love the oatmeal and shea butter scent.  Yummy!  My baby's bottom is so soft and free of any diaper rash!!!!  I never felt the need for a diaper sprayer.  I use grovia flushable liners instead when I know we are going to have a dirty diaper and I just take out the liner and flush it!  It's fabulous!  I am always looking at new goodies and new diapers to try to add to my collection DAILY and I just flip when my fluff arrives in the mail:)  I don't know why everyone doesn't use cloth diapers.  I love cloth diapering!!!!
