Super Saturday Special

I know you're all dying to know what our Black Friday specials and deals will be, but we can't tell you yet.  We can't reveal most of the offers until Thanksgiving or Black Friday.  I know that Target, Wal-Mart, and Best Buys all reveal their deals ahead of time, but as a small business we just can't tell you anything until they are revealed.  I thought it would be fun to give you a list of 10 reasons you should shop with us BEFORE Black Friday!!

1. (Almost) Everything you want is in stock!  That's right, we're almost fully stocked and actually stocked up a LOT more than usual.  We will have a few last minute items stocking early in the week, but we won't be restocking between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday.  That means if you see something you REALLY want to get and you'll be devastated if it's out of stock, then maybe shopping early is for you!

2. Super Speedy Shipping!  Chances are that if you place your order with us on Monday or Tuesday that your order will be packed and shipped super fast! We're pretty well caught up on shipping and processing is usually just 1-2 days at the beginning of the week.  We can't say the same thing later in the week since we're closed early on Wed and off on Thanksgiving.  The number of orders increases significantly on Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and through Cyber Monday.  Even with our full staff working on processing orders, processing times will likely be 4-7 business days (Mon-Fri).

3. Guaranteed free gift with purchase! We'll have our standard coupon codes during the early part of the week which will guarantee you a free OS diaper with your order (see coupon codes for details).  We won't have any coupon codes active on Black Friday or anytime over the weekend or on Cyber Monday.  We will have some doorbuster gifts with purchase each day but only for a limited number of customers.  If you love the guaranteed free diaper; order early this week!

4. Fluffy mail while others are waiting! You'll be super excited to track your order after Thanksgiving while others are waiting for their orders to process!  You'll get to put those adorable diapers on your baby and share pictures with all the other cloth diapering mamas; they'll be waiting (not so) patiently for their orders!!

5. Less errors.  While we don't usually make mistakes while packing orders, it does happen (we are human after all).  If you place your order this week when we're not super busy, you're almost guaranteed a perfect order the first time!!  Errors can happen on the customer side too when they are trying to hurry to process their order (spelling errors, wrong addresses entered, selecting the wrong color or closure, etc).

6. No stress shopping! If you order early in the week, you can take your time and think about your order.  You can take your time and make sure you get the right diaper, in the correct color/print, in the correct closure, and you can double check your order before you submit it.  If you shop later in the week, you're likely going to feel rushed.

7. No impulse buying!  If you order early in the week, you're less likely to be impulsive.  If you shop on Black Friday with us, you may add a few extra goodies to your cart because they are a good deal!  Shopping early is better for those customers on a strict budget.

8. Timely customer service & support.  Should you have a problem with your order, our customer service staff is alert and ready to help.  We reply quicker in the beginning of the week to phone calls and emails.  If you try to reach us later in the week, you might get our voicemail while we assist other customers who have called in ahead of you.

9. Earn extra Diaper Dollars to spend on Black Friday!!  How many Diaper Dollars are in your account?  Do you have enough to redeem for a reward certificate?  You may just be short a few points and if you make a small order early in the week, you'll have enough points to redeem and use on Black Friday!  Just be sure to redeem them ahead of time so you aren't searching for the reward certificate if it gets lost in the interwebs!!

10. Because it's always fun to shop for fluff!!  You know when you're having a bad day or feeling stressed out, shopping for cloth diapers will help bring you out of that gloomy feeling and bring a smile to your face!!

...and since I know many of you are waiting for the REALLY good deals that happen on Black Friday, don't forget to get on our special Black Friday mailing list <---click there to get on the list> and be sure you follow us on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram and all our social media outlets.

As a Fluff Moderator on the Cloth Diaper Support Group on Facebook, I find myself troubleshooting and answering some of the same questions over and over again. These foundational questions are very important, ranging from “help, my diapers stink!” to “is this amount of money a good price for this used diaper?”

Although I love to support Kelly’s Closet, I’ve also purchased diapers used locally. Buying used does have many benefits. If you are new to cloth diapers, buying used helps you to try out several different brands without having to pay for a new diaper. It is also a good way to grow your stash if you are just starting out. But watch out, sometimes buying used diapers is more trouble than it is worth. Make sure you’ve done your homework before looking at used diapers so you don’t buy on a whim and regret it later.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when looking at used cloth diapers.

  1. Do your research!  What brand is the diaper?  How does that brand rate in the cloth diaper world? What are its ratings online?  What is their retail value?  Do as much research as possible and ask the seller as many questions as you can.  I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve heard a mom say that she purchased “china cheapies” from craigslist thinking it was a good deal, only to find out that she purchased them for more than they were bought brand new.  Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
  2. Ask and consider how many babies the cloth has diapered.  This can often, but certainly not always, be a good indicator as to what shape the diaper will be in.  Ask if the seller has ever had the elastic replaced or repaired.
  3. Know, in detail, the condition the diaper is in and decide ahead of time how much time and/or money you are willing to put into the diaper.  Don’t buy a nonfunctioning diaper (stretched elastic, worn aplix, etc) because you love the print unless you know for a fact you are willing to repair it.  I purchased 10 used bumGenius diapers from a friend and they sat for almost a year in a drawer in my basement because they needed new aplix and I didn’t have the time to fix them.  Big mistake!!
  4. If the diaper is aplix or hook and loop, you may need to replace it or hire someone else to do so.  Know the cost of both options.
  5. Know what detergent the cloth diapers were washed in if possible.  Those same bumGenius diapers I bought smelled so strongly of Tide that I almost got sick when I pulled them out of the bag for the first time.  Not a problem but I wish I had known first!
  6. Also ask if the diapers are leaking or if the seller is having stink issues.  If the answer is yes, do your research and decide if remediation is something you are willing to do.  You may need to strip your diapers.  Know your options.  A good place to start is Funk Rock for stinky diapers and RLR for leaking diapers.
Happy, safe and SMART bargain hunting!

Mindy is mom to 3 little people. She spends her days being a fluff mod on the Cloth Diaper Support Group facebook page, building blocks, breaking up fights and reading the same books a zillion times. Oh, and changing lots and lots of cloth diapers…seriously…all day long.

Tips on Buying Used Cloth Diapers

When you make the decision to use cloth diapers, it can seem very overwhelming. Until now, the daily diapers that your baby wore were an afterthought, and something that didn't take a whole lot of effort. Besides the different brands, there wasn't really a whole lot to learn. With cloth diapers, the options seem staggering. Below you will find some frequently asked questions about purchasing, using, and caring for your cloth diapers.

How many daily diapers do I need?
The answer to this question will depend largely on the age of your baby. For example, newborns use more daily diapers than toddlers. A newborn baby may need to be changed as many as a dozen times per day, especially if you are breastfeeding. Older babies may only require you to change them 4-6 times per day. To determine how many cloth diapers to purchase, decide how often you will want to wash. For example, if you have a newborn, and only want to wash twice a week, three or four dozen diapers are recommended.

What type of cloth diaper is best for me?
There are four main types of cloth diapers. A prefold diaper is the old fashioned type that needs to be folded and pinned. These require a separate waterproof cover. This type of diaper is best for those on a budget, being the most affordable. A fitted diaper is shaped like disposables, with elastic and the legs and waist. These also need a separate waterproof cover. These types of daily diapers are best for those who want more leak protection, while still offering affordability and a quick dry time. Pocket diapers include an absorbent insert that fits into an outer waterproof shell. These diapers are best for those that want the convenience of an all-in-one design, without sacrificing customized absorption. Finally, an AIO diaper is built just like a disposable, but you can wash it after each use. Absorbent layers are sewn in, or attach with snaps. This type is best for when changing daily diapers is shared with dads, sitters or daycare workers.
How do I wash my daily diapers?
It is very easy to wash cloth diapers. While many parents still rinse and soak their cloth diapers, it's not always necessary. Solid waste can be shaken into the toilet and the diaper placed in the pail until wash day. Daily diapers should be washed in hot water, using a detergent like Rockin' Green Cloth Diaper Detergent. Use a double rinse cycle if it is available on your machine. For stains, the best remedy for washing your daily diapers is to hang your cloth diapers outside, on a sunny day.

Daily Diapers-Just the Plain Ol' Basics

If I had to do it all over again, I would probably do things a little differently than when I began cloth diapering a year and a half ago. After trying the bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diaper sample pack from Kelly’s Closet, I jumped right in and bought a 24 pack of bumGenius One Size 3.0 diapers. Initially, I choose this diaper because I loved the ease of pocket diapers, and I was able to use the same diaper on both of my boys. (At the time, they were 3 months and 26 months.) My stash remained the same for a while, until I added a dozen large FuzziBunz when my oldest son outgrew the bumGenius diapers.

It wasn’t until earlier this year when I began adding prefolds, flats and fitted diapers to my stash. I had been hesitant to try anything other than a pocket diaper, mostly because they just worked so well, and were so easy to use. The main reason I began to look into the other options is because I wanted to add some fun prints to my stash; the Kiwi Pie fitted diapers fit the bill perfectly. Although I still love my bumGenius diapers for on-the-go and at night, I am really enjoying the variety in my cloth diaper stash.

If my stash were to disappear and I had to buy a new stash I would want to start over with the following diapers: (Of course, I only have one child in diapers now instead of two, and I know my husband would never let me replace every diaper I currently own since he thinks I have too many already.)

  • 3 bumGenius 3.0 - The only diaper I trust for overnight.
  • 6 Smartipants - For on-the-go, and when others are caring for my sons – I just love the snaps!
  • 2 Bamboo Blueberry Minkys – I just love how soft and cute they are and every cloth diapering momma deserves to splurge every once in a while!
  • 1 dozen flat diapers – For the economical cloth diapering momma in me.
  • 1 dozen pre fold diapers – Again, for the economical cloth diapering momma in me.
  • 4 Kiwi Pie fitted diapers – I just love the cute prints!
  • 3 Large Fuzzi Bunz - For when the my little guy outgrows the bumGenius 3.0's for nighttime use.
  • 6 Diaper covers - Mostly Thirsties and Blueberry Coveralls because they fit my little guy so perfectly.
  • 3 Superdo inserts – I haven’t found anything better for overnight protection from leaks.
  • 6 Hemp inserts - For added absorbency when needed.
  • 2 Snappis – I’m afraid of traditional diaper pins.
  • 2 dozen cloth wipes – Why throw away disposable wipes when I can wash cloth wipes along with the diapers?
We just moved across the county last week and most my fluff was packed up in the moving truck for a few days. If something would have happened to it, I would have been sad, but at the same time excited about going on a major fluff shopping spree. It all arrived at our new house safely, so I guess I won’t get the opportunity to start all over with my new “ideal” stash.

If I Had To Do it Over....

When my dad does something, anything, no matter what it was, he does it 150% percent. Scuba diving? He bought the most expensive scuba gear and equipment! Metal detecting? Yep, he had a fancy schmancy metal detector. Muscle cars? He owned a 1969 Hemi Super Bee (commonly referred to as his “retirement”). I even created a stand-up routine that lasted more than 10 minutes highlighting some of his many “hobbies.”

Alas, I am very much my father’s daughter! My mom and I have a long standing joke: “Mirror Mirror On the Wall... I am my father after all!”

Therefore it was no surprise when I finally succumbed to my incredible urge to cloth diaper that I would become the cloth diaper aficionado I am today. Despite being my dad’s twin, there’s one thing I’ve learned from him that has always proven beneficial; RESEARCH BEFORE you buy!

I spent DAYS (not just a few minutes here and there over the course of a couple days, but hours upon hours) pouring over all the cloth diaper options available (at the time). Reading reviews, analyzing the pros and cons of just about every diaper option and brand, deciphering detergents (what was and was not recommended), laundry routines, you name it, I did the research on it!

Finally I settled on purchasing the bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diapers. So I spent another two days comparison shopping. I was determined to find the best possible price (I’m all for saving money whenever possible especially on such a hearty investment as cloth diapers). I quickly discovered Kelly’s Closet had the best package deals (and still does in my slightly biased opinion). I decided on the Shop and Go package (comes with virtually everything you need to get started - diapers, wipes, wet bag, diaper sprayer) and purchased a few additional diapers to have a plentiful stash.

After using the bumGenius diapers I was SOLD on cloth diapers! I also used prefolds and diaper covers in the early weeks because I wanted to “save” my pocket diapers from wear and tear! Yes, I know these are just diapers and they’re meant to get used - but I’m VERY particular about keeping my things looking nice and brand spakin’ new for as long as possible!

It was not long before I branched out and tried other diapers such as the Happy Heinys One Size diapers (thanks to the Happy Heinys/Baby Frenzy Fashion Show we were able to participate in here in San Diego last year). Then I ordered a couple of the Blueberry One Size diapers and I fell in love with those diapers - the diapers fit great, snaps are easy to use and the hemp combination insert is super absorbent.

Needless to say all of the amazing sales Kelly’s Closet offered only fed my addiction! Seriously, how many of you have the strength to say no to a diaper sale? I can’t imagine many of you raising your hands! (Yes, believe it or not I was just an ordinary Kelly’s Closet customer before I became the cloth diaper guru many of you rely on for tips, advise, and recommendations.)

Now, of course, I have a new excuse for buying and trying every new diaper that comes out because, after all, I have to be able to know what I’m talking about when someone asks about a particular diaper, right? All in the name of customer service! At least that’s what I try to tell my husband when he sees the changing table and two closets overflowing with diapers! *Sheepish grin*

What, if anything, would I have advised myself back then when I was a “newbie”, knowing what I do now? Hindsight is always 20/20, eh?!? I would definitely advise buying a sample of various diapers that interest you most. At least this way you’re not putting all your eggs in one basket! While I love the bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diapers I quickly discovered there were other amazing diapers I wish I had given a try first before investing so much in one diaper.
