The country has made a move, out of necessity but for the better, I believe, towards frugality these past few years. We have relearned the nearly lost arts of food preservation and storage, the value of a well-maintained pantry, and the simple pleasures of baking our own loaves of bread and bringing in baskets of sun-dried laundry off the line. If you're anything like me, you may have wished that you could go back in time and ask great-grandma to share her tricks and tips.

In parenting, we're experiencing growing pains as we re-learn, as a country, the challenges and benefits of breastfeeding. We're making our own baby food. There has been a big enough shift in behavior that we've left corporations scrambling to figure out how to get at least a few dollars out of us - you can now find all manner of “support” items in the major chains, from soothing gel packs for breasts, to freezer storage trays for baby food. A few are even useful.

With the increased interest in back-to-basics frugality, then, why are we having so much trouble convincing our baby-shower attendees that a 3-pack of FuzziBunz, BumGenius, SmartiPants, or (insert your favorite one-size cloth diaper) are a practical investment for any mother? I'd like to put forth the argument that having 8-12 one-size (OS) diapers on hand, usable for the bulk of early childhood, should be viewed as just plain common sense and good household management, to boot.

Why is it good practice to have a supply of cloth diapers on hand? For the same reason it's good practice to have extra food in the pantry – any number of situations might occur over the course of 2-3 years that would limit your ability (due to time constraints, financial limitations, or natural disasters) to pick up that next box of diapers as planned. Can you see yourself in any of the following situations?
  • You or your partner's employer may use employee furloughs to stay in budget, or the overtime you'd expected doesn't materialize.
  • Your hours are cut for a few weeks after the holidays.
  • You need to pay the copay for the doctor's visit and two prescriptions, or the car needs a new alternator.
  • You've been so busy with other errands that you haven't had time to run to the store.
  • A series of big winter storms keeps you stranded out of town for the better part of the last month (remember last winter?), and when you finally make it into town, the shelves are empty.
  • You're an exhausted new mom who can barely make it to the grocery store, let alone to the big warehouse store where you normally get the best deals on bulk items like disposable diapers. Need I continue?
Since I'm arguing for the acquisition of a small OS stash as a practical financial measure, it's only fair to calculate how many uses are required for “pay off”. It depends on several factors, but generally, you'll want to replace about 400-800 diaper changes (of over 7000 for the average baby) for a $100-$150 investment (the cost of 8-12 diapers for some popular one-size systems). That may sound daunting, but take a look at some “pay-off scenarios”:
  • Cloth diaper full time from the time your child is 2-5 months old, or until she starts solids.
  • Cloth diaper full time on the 2 days before every laundry-day. This works out especially well for laundrette users.
  • Cloth diaper just during the evenings (or just during the day) on most weekdays.
  • If you know you will have more children or the cousins can use them, (and a diaper could last through as many as 4-6 children over the normal lifetime of a back-up diaper) you can hit payoff with as little use as one-day of use every 2-4 months- a true back-up supply.

Another way to look at it is that every diaper you use on a daily basis saves you about $150 (minus the price of the diaper) by the time you potty train.

Can it really be a cost-saving measure if you don't plan to cloth-diaper full time? Is it honestly a realistic form of insurance against a rainy day? While the answer to that will vary on family-by-family basis, in general I believe the answer is yes. I do believe that the beauty of having a small, user-friendly (as opposed to the ubiquitous package of Gerber prefolds) and guilt-free (because mom knows they will pay for themselves, if not with this child, than with the next) diaper supply of modern, identical, one-size cloth diapers at every mother's fingertips is the flexibility it grants the family's financial and time budgets. And frankly, family budgets (financial and time) are seldom challenged like they are when we have small children.

Who knows, that 8-12 OS backup stash could even lead to full-time cloth diapering.

A Common-Sense Campaign for One-Size Diapers

I’m going to let you in on a dirty little secret. I have a diaper sprayer, but I don’t use it! I know, I know. I do agree that the diaper sprayer is one of the best inventions in cloth diaper care. It truly does rinse all the nasties off without you having to resort to unpleasant maneuvers such as the “dunk and swish”. But alas, my sprayer hangs forlornly on the side of the toilet, unused for weeks. Let me tell you my story…

Back when my gorgeous 6 month old was only a wish in my heart, I decided that I would cloth diaper my children. It just seemed like the most health conscious, environmentally friendly, economical thing to do. My husband, being the laid back man than he is, agreed wholeheartedly. So, when after years of infertility, our son was born prematurely, it was a shock to me that he wouldn’t fit into any of the millions (it felt like) of Bumgenius, Fuzzibunz, and Smartipants diapers that I had stocked up on. Plus, he was in the NICU, and it was all too overwhelming…the nurses changed him more than we did. So, we fell into using disposables.

When we brought our son home we continued using the disposables until one day, at nearly 2 months old, I realized that the Bumgenius organic AIO fit! I was so excited; I could finally switch to the cloth diapers and wipes I had so lovingly bought for my son. But, I was worried about one thing. The poop.

You see, back when I had decided to cloth diaper I had never had a baby before, much less changed a poopy diaper. I didn’t know what baby poop was like. That is oozed into places it had no business being. That it could be runny, or chunky, or stick to the butt cheeks like tar on a runway. That it could be so explosive and a little 10 lb. baby could produce so much! But I was determined; so on we went with the switch to cloth!

Now, for the first few weeks I was an excellent cloth diaperer. I would change my son’s diaper and then place him in the crib to stare at his mobile while I would diligently employ my diaper sprayer to clean every spot of poo off of his diaper. I would, fearful of stains, run that sprayer until I was sure I had used up an entire body of water somewhere nearby. And my diaper would still have poo streaks (of course the washing machine would remedy this) and would be sopping wet.As my son got older, more mobile and less content to sit in his crib after a diaper change (or even get his diaper changed, for that matter!) I noticed a terrible trend. Instead of spraying my diapers after each use, I would set the dirty diaper on the counter in the bathroom, vowing to spray it off later and put it in the diaper pail. A day would go by, and there would be 8 diapers, 10 diapers, 12 diapers. The piles were getting out of hand, but I was consumed with motherhood, and any free moment I used to take a shower, not spray diapers.

One fateful day, I opened my diaper drawer and realized I was down to my last two cloth diapers. My son was fussy, I had a scratch in my throat that I was praying would not turn into a cold, and I desperately wanted to put a lasagna in the over before my husband got home. I bemoaned that fact that I was a cloth diaperer. Oh how easy it would be to just grab a disposable! I knew I had to wash my diapers- and quick- but upon opening the bathroom door to retrieve the diaper pail I was greeted by mountains of unsprayed, dirty diapers. How in the world had I let so many build up without spraying them off!? In a moment of desperation I just threw all the diapers into the wash, unsprayed, full of days old poop, praying everything would turn out OK. I was on the verge of giving up the whole cloth diapering idea. But, to my surprise, the diapers were spotless! In fact, this desperation wash attempt went so well that I began to wonder why in the world I was spending all this time spraying diapers. My Rockin’ Green and wash routine was ensuring that the dirty, poopy diapers came out just as clean.

So, that is how I became a lazy cloth diaperer. How my diaper sprayer has gone unused for weeks and weeks. When I change a diaper, whether wet or poopy, into the pail it goes, no spraying at all. For my top loader I use a 15 minute cold rinse cycle with 1 scoop of Rockin’ green, then a full hot wash cycle with 2 scoops of Rockin’ Green, then an extra rinse. The diapers are perfect every time. Occasionally I do get stains, just like I did when I was religiously spraying my diapers, but I just set them out in the sun and they whiten right up.

Once my son starts solids I know everything will change. We’ll be dealing with another type of dirty diaper all together. But, if you’re thinking about cloth diapering your newborn, and you are worried about poop, like I was, take it from me: you really can just put it in the washing machine and get clean diapers. It sure has saved me a lot of time, and restarted my love affair with cloth diapers. Plus, I have more time to spend with my adorable son, and who wouldn’t want that?

Weekend Super Saver Coupon - March 20th & 21st

This is what my brother asked me within minutes of meeting my then-2-month-old baby Oskar over the holidays. My husband and I, baby in tow, made the eight-hour trek by car (typically five hours, but baby adds three) specifically to introduce our new bundle to my family. The highlight of this visit was that Oskar would have the opportunity to meet my brother's baby -- Oskar's cousin -- for the first time, along with a host of tittering aunts and fawning uncles and fussing grandparents. We arrived and made the whirlwind of introductions, barely surviving the onslaught of camera flashbulbs that went off when the babies held hands upon meeting. Then, not long after,

"Why does your baby look like a Who?"

"What?" I asked.

"A Who," my brother replied.

"A which?"

"A Who. You know, from Dr. Seuss?" he clarified.

"Oh," I said. "As in, Horton Hears a..."

"A Who." My brother pointed at my baby's butt.

I looked at Oskar and realized what my brother was trying to say in his typically colorful way. Oskar did look somewhat like a Who, one of the tiny, cheerful, and vaguely pear-shaped inhabitants of Whoville, with his one-piece romper stretched over his little body and his especially rotund bottom. That's because Oskar was sporting our pocket diaper of choice, a Smartipants, double-stuffed for the long car ride, and was looking extra-fluffy that evening.

Since he was about a month old, Oskar has been in cloth. We never planned on cloth; it never even occurred to us. We figured we would have enough on our plates with a whole new person living in our house, leaving a trail of soiled laundry in his wake. But a few things happened right after Oskar was born. We became tired of the constant trips to the baby store for diapers and wipes, just in the few weeks our baby lived in disposables.

We were appalled by the sheer volume of garbage we were tossing into our trash can several times a day -- made even more embarrassing by the fact we were tossing said garbage into the can directly next to the recycling bin we proudly frequent, the one right behind our hybrid car. We educated ourselves and I spent lots of time over at educated; I spent lots of time on Kim’s website, Dirty Diaper Laundry.

I was shocked at how different cloth diapers are from how I'd imagined (in other words, they didn't necessarily involve giant safety pins and a backbreaking laundry routine). We became sentimental; how could we possibly have been prepared for just how much we could love this new little person, for just how fervently we would want to give him the very best we could?

And so I explained to my brother that Oskar looked like a Who that night -- and in fact always looked like a Who -- because he wore cloth diapers. I waited for the standard response.

"Poop? In your washing machine?" He raised an eyebrow.

And, as I always do, I resisted the urge to reply, "Chemicals? Against your baby's skin?" or "Trash the planet your baby will inherit?"

Instead, I simply smiled and said, "You bet."

"Why does your baby look like a Who?"

On 9/9/09, my daughter was born. She weighed a whopping 9 pounds and 5 ounces and as her slimy, beautiful little body was placed on my belly, my world changed forever. When a friend came to visit us in the hospital bearing the kind gift of three one size bumGenius One Size 3.0 cloth diapers, my diapering philosophy was also irrevocably changed.

The thing is, I had the intention to cloth diaper while I was expecting – I intended on using prefolds because I didn’t know that there were any other options. Then, I talked to a friend of mine who was using FuzziBunz; they sounded so cool I had to look them up online for myself. WOAH! I couldn’t imagine myself shelling out $15-$20 per diaper—especially since the reason I wanted to cloth diaper in the first place was so I could save money.

I resigned myself to stick with Gerber prefolds and rubber pants I could find at Wal-Mart, Target, and BabiesRUs, although I was less inclined to use them after seeing how much cloth diapering had changed. However, I just couldn’t bring myself to buy them. I registered for some Kushies but unfortunately no one bought them for me and I knew my husband and I would never be able to shell out that amount of cash at one time on our own.

Thankfully my friend walked into our hospital room bearing the gift of three, adorably amazing diapers (along with a special coupon), and I was hooked. Seriously, it was the one of the best baby gifts I received, and that’s after four—no seriously, four baby showers.

My daughter was big baby, as mentioned above, so my bumGenius diapers fit her right away—though the rise was a little high. As soon as her umbilical cord fell off I started using all three of her cloth diapers. I loved them so much I’d wash them twice a day just so I could use them more. Obviously, though, full time cloth diapering wasn’t an option at this time. What I discovered, though, was it wasn’t necessary to shell out the big bucks for these amazing diapers all at once. Sure, $13-18 a diaper seems steep when you look at all the diapers a baby needs at once, but if you take small bites out of that chunk just a little bit at a time, it really isn’t that bad; and that’s what we did.

With each paycheck, we bought 1-3 diapers. At first, I was unaware of all the different types of diapers that were out there. I was only aware of one website that had bumGenius diapers - so I gradually bought all of their great colors. One day, as I was online, I decided to do a Google search for “cloth diapers.”

I was delighted to find the Smartipants One Size diapers for only $14.95 each. I bought a 3-pack, bringing the price down to only $13 each. I wanted to pay it forward, so I kept two of those diapers and set one aside for a friend of mine who was expecting and interested in cloth diapering. I didn’t know what kind of diaper she’d prefer, so I went ahead and bought her a bumGenius and a Happy Heinys One Size diaper as well the next time I made my orders so that she’d have three different diapers to try. Once I touched the Happy Heinys for myself and saw how stinkin’ adorable they are, I had to have some for my daughter, so I bought a couple of them with my next paycheck.

I finally discovered websites like Kelly’s Closet that offered tons of different types of diapers; searching through these sites to find the perfect cloth diaper for my family became an obsession. I now have a stash of 24 one-size pocket diapers (26 once my recent order arrives) including many different brands such as Haute Pockets, Knickernappies, Gro Baby (which I thankfully won from Kelly’s Closet), FuzziBunz, Tweedlebugs, Rocky Mountain and even some Indian prefolds (which I have yet to master). And yes, I have found the perfect diaper to suit my needs. I absolutely adore the FuzziBunz One Size diaper because of its durability and great—no I mean great—fit.

It’s funny. Originally my husband and I never intended to cloth diaper fulltime. We fully intended on using disposables outside of the house. However, with the purchase of a small wet bag, I discovered cloth diapering while outside of the home is surprisingly easy! I’ve even gone so far as to make my own baby wipes—double sided flannel wipes stitched together with a zigzag stitch that work better than any disposable (see The Cloth Diaper Whisperer Tutorial for DIY Wipes). I wet the wipes with wipe solution I make from wipe cubes I bought online. After I made some for myself, I sent a couple of these homemade wipes to two friends who cloth diaper.

To make a long story short, our Diaper Genie is officially retired and gathering dust in the basement, and it’s been weeks since my daughter donned a disposable. To tell you the truth, my husband and I have never wasted a dime on disposable diapers ourselves. The ones we have are still left over from my baby showers! And as for the $6+ I was spending on wipes every week? That money is now saved for better purposes as well. Our daughter is happily diapered in cloth diapers all the time, and we’re so pleased that she has the best material imaginable next to her sensitive skin. I’m sold on cloth diapers 100% and I will never go back!

My aforementioned friend had her baby and is also cloth diapering with a preference of Indian unbleached prefolds and some Thirsties Diaper Covers. Cloth diapers are truly the gift that keeps on giving. I’m certainly glad someone thought to give some to me!

Cloth diapers are making news again. This time Smartipants Diapers were talked about on the hit medical talk show, The Doctors - this is the first time the show has tackled this topic.

Pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears says that 7,000 diapers go into landfills per child. He says is wasn't that bad to do and admits that he cloth diapered his first child too! (Dr. Sears is top doc in our books!).

Dr. Sears demonstrated how Smartipants works by opening the diaper, pulling out the pocket insert, and showing how easily solids flick off into the toilet.

Dr. Lisa Masterson said she tried cloth diapers and, "You just have buckets of crap everywhere." She probably hasn't had the opportunity to use Smartipants or other modern cloth diaper options - as she is referring to the struggles of cloth diapering of year's past.

Last month I placed my first fluff order in several months, in it, a diaper I couldn’t wait to try out… Smartipants One Size Diaper. I was thrilled when my order arrived; I couldn’t get the diaper washed and prepped soon enough. I read so many great things about this new diaper and I just had to try it out for myself. I was intrigued by its relatively low cost of just $14.95 (insert included), as well as the fact the diaper featured a snap closure which I prefer over hook and loop (aka velcro). I was also interested in testing the ability of being able to wash the diaper without removing the soiled insert first.

Once my new diaper was washed and ready to go I put it to use on my 19 month old son, Brendan. The fit was very similar to my bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diapers; I was quite pleased in that respect. After the first diaper change I felt funny just tossing the wet diaper in the pail without first removing the completely soaked insert. As most first time Smartipants users probably feel, I was somewhat hesitant to try washing it without removing the insert, but I figured it was worth a shot. When wash day rolled around two days later I was pleasantly surprised to find that yes indeed, the insert fell right out in the washing machine and my new Smartipants diaper was as clean as new.

In addition to the ease of washing, I love the snap closure and super trim fit. Initially I wondered if the single row of snaps would hold the diaper sufficiently without wing droop. I’m happy to report the diaper passed the test with flying colors. Not only did the diaper fit on my son wonderfully, it also fit fairly trim when using the insert that came with the diaper, as well as an additional hemp insert for extra absorption (Brendan is a very heavy wetter). While I've read some comments from other moms who thought the diaper was as bulky as the bumGenius One Size diapers, but in our case, it was more trim. Brendan is 26 pounds and wears the largest settings, so perhaps that has something to do with it.

Despite the fact I have a much bigger fluff stash than I really need, I am looking forward to adding a few more Smartipants diapers to my rotation. When we’re out and about I imagine they would be my top pick to take with me since I would simply dump my wet bag into the diaper pail or washing machine when I got home – no more digging through a wet bag and pulling wet, cold inserts out of my pocket diapers.

We are back from our exciting trip to Vegas attending the ABC kids show! Our trip was amazing! Not only did we see new "fluffy" products that will be coming to our stores soon but we were able to connect with manufacturers. It is so nice to put faces behind the products that we purchase.

This year I attended along with my shipping dept.manager, Karley, my husband Scott, and my 15 month old Riley. We left last Sunday, Sept. 13th. Riley traveled wonderful on the way out. We had 2 flights. One from Portland to JFK and the other from JFK to Vegas. I was amazed at how well Riley handled both flights. He certainly has earned his "travel wings". He has flown 9 times since he was born.!

Congratulations to Sarahjenne the winner of our Vegas Giveaway. She will be receiving 6 free "fluffy" products in the next few weeks. Thank you to all of you who participated in our Vegas Giveaway.

I know many of you had fun guessing what Riley was wearing for cloth diapers each day. Yes- we cloth diapered in Vegas. We stayed at a Residence Inn so we had access to laundry facilities. The week before our trip I sent out a box via UPS of cloth diapers, wipes, and flushable liners. So what did Riley wear in Vegas? He wore Smartipants (our new fave),bumGenius sized aios, bumGenius one size 3.0's, and FuzziBunz One Size. Honestly, we loved the Smartipants the best. What I liked is that I didn't have to worry about pulling out an insert out of the diaper and they dried super, super quick.

Now you may ask- did I use disposables? Yes, I did. The night before we left I washed all of Riley's diapers so that evening he was in a disposable. You know what? The disposable leaked- honestly! Another feather in the cap for cloth diapers!

I also have to put in a plug for a wonderful company I used in Las Vegas. I rented a few items (high chair, crib, toys, etc) from Las Vegas Baby Equipment Rentals. I ordered what I needed right on their website and received a confirmation within hours. When we arrived at the hotel the items we rented were waiting for us behind the front desk. I originally requested a crib through the hotel. Unfortunately they were all taken. (I didn't realize that cribs weren't guaranteed when you book a hotel reservation.) My husband called Raquel of LV Baby Rentals and within 1 hour a portable crib was delivered. I was so impressed especially as it was Sunday evening. All items were super clean. I would highly recommend using them if you are traveling to Las Vegas.

We stayed an extra day in Vegas to play a bit. My husband arranged for Karley and I to go on a helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam. He redeemed some reward points from hotel stays and we were able to go for free (a $600 savings-woo hoo). We had such a blast! The only thing is I wished our entire staff was there! I missed them all!

My husband Scott and I were able to go out to a nice dinner one evening while Karley watched Riley. It was a much needed date as we haven't been out to dinner alone since Riley was born.

I have to also give a big thank you to the gals who "held down the fort" while we were away. Thank you so much Serena, Jill, Deedee, and Janet!

We look forward to bringing you all the new fluffy products that were launched at the ABC kids show!
