I haven't had the experience yet of potty training, my daughter is 18 months old, so this will be something that we will be experiencing soon enough. I think that I would be too afraid to potty train using regular underwear because I would think that it would be a really messy ordeal, so I think that I would use training pants. I am interested to see what other people say that have gone through potty training.

For me it is the time of day and what we have going. If it is during the day and we are at home, it is underwear or nothing at all(I think that works the best) and if it is night or well we are out it is training pants... once are are done with diapers there is no going back and forth for us... There is just too much confusion.

as with all things, it has been a combination, and different for both my kids. My son did best with underwear, having it wet all his clothes got through to him better than when it only got the underwear (or if i used disposable training pants...well, they were useless, he couldn't care less about the fading designs). however for my daughter, while using training underwear were useful for that "oh, it makes a big mess when i pee my pants" connection, she responded better to DISPOSABLE training pants than anything else!! We used them for going to church & when i explained that the "hearts go away" if she pees in her pants, she was mortified. She prefers to wear those crazy things & is so excited to see "i not make hearts go away!". Geez. We're now 2 weeks into it & thankfully she will not fight me on wearing actual cotton underwear, anymore. :) But I'd love some cloth trainers for naptime & night-time!

I'm not sure where I should put this comment, but I would love to see Kelly's Closet carry Kushies swim diapers. I am absolutely IN LOVE with the daisy print and like the idea of a swim diaper that has a bit of a liner (I wasn't impressed with the Imse Vimse I tried last summer), so I plan on buying that for my daughter this spring.

I like using regular underwear during the day with training pants at night. This allows the child to feel the effects of wetting himself right away during the day (faster teaching, in my opinion) but doesn't force me to wash bedding constantly!

I tried to encourage my daughter to use the potty for months, but she would flatly refuse and keep going in her diaper or pull-up. Then I decided to go cold-turkey and only use underwear during the day. Well, after a week of accidents, she was able to reach the bathroom on time. I've never tried the cloth training pants, but I'd love to use that at night and for naps.

My DD is 15 months old and she has PP'd on the potty 3 times so far. (By chance mostly). But I think it's huge that she is not afraid to sit on the potty & she is not afraid of the flushing toilet. We have a book that was given to us about potty training for girls and she loves to sit on the potty and flip through it and it has a button with the flush sound and she thinks it's hilarious. So anyways, introducing her to the physical potty early on (11 months) and taking her in w/ me whenever I go...has gotten her use to the idea. Our schedules have been far to busy to be consistent w/ the training pants like we should be. But, the last time I put them on her she went well over an hour w/ out wetting them, which indicates she is learning how to hold it a little longer.

Regular pants as that way they can tell when they are wet.

I don't have any experience with boys, but I can tell you that I didn't need to use training pants with my daughter. She was potty trained overnight. The secret is to wait until the child is ready, not when you're ready. When the child is ready, they will not want to have accidents.

I think underwear would work better. When I started to use prefolds without covers, my son started wanting his diaper changed right after peeing--I think the PUL covers keep him warm, but without those, a wet diaper feels uncomfortable. It was shortly after that that he started holding his pee and peeing in the potty.

That being said--I don't like the mess that underwear creates, so we're using trainers and diapers until he's poop trained!

I am not sure I'm the best to answer this but we used training pants, regular underwear and nothing. The only way I could get my dd to poop in the toliet was to go naked. I prefer the traning pants like gerber at the beginning since they can feel wet but it doesn't make as big a mess. I am dreading potting training with my younger dd now 22 months. She refuses to sit on the potty now. So we are waiting until she shows a little more interest. My older dd has been trained over a year now and still needs a diaper at nap and night time. So these would be nice for us to try out.

With our 3yr old, once we made the switch cold turkey from disposable trainers to underwear, it took 3 days and she was able to make it to the toilet every time! And that was when she was 2 yrs 2 months! Our 21 month old is now wearing diapers but using the toilet throughout the day... usually only wet dipes at nap or night! Cloth trainers would certainly replace the diapers and make it just as easy for this preggo momma!

I start out using training pants & then switch to underwear, mainly because if you just do underwear then your stuck cleaning underwear, pants, socks, & shoes which just sucks ;) My 2 yr old is throwing me for a loop the lil turkey will go potty alllll day long (in the potty) if hes wearing nothing but a shirt, that's right if I let him run around the house naked he does great however the minute something is covering his bottom he poops/pees in it! Grrrrrr

Well, seeing as my daughter is not yet potty trained and I haven't given it the FULL effort (she's 17 months), I can't comment too seriously on this. I do feel like a quick transition to panties is important, though. When used, training pants should be used very briefly! I do CD and I would LOVE to try these out soon!
Thanks :)

I'm in the process of attempting to potty train my child. At this point, I haven't figured out which works better yet. We've recently (as in the past two weeks) tried training pants on her with little success. We've shown her regular underpants that she can wear once she starts to use the potty more. She doesn't seem that excited yet - although she has started putting her stuffed animals and dolls on the potty, so hopefully, she's getting the picture.

It seemed like it took a long time to potty train my son who is now 4 years old. We used Bummis training pants at first and then went to underwear. As others have posted, we also had him naked to learn how it felt when he needed to go.

Potty training has been one of the most difficult parenting things for me.....we'll see how it goes with my second and third kids!!

For training it was underwear or bare bum at home and trainers at night and out and about.

I used the bare bottom approach during the day for my daughter. We kept her in diapers at night. She only had 1 accident while going bare, and she went bare for almost 2 months! At that point we explained that she could wear big girl underwear now, and made a big deal of it so she got excited about picking out "Dora" undies. She was completely dry, day and night, within 10 days. We went directly to regular underwear. I tried using the disposable trainers for outings and such, but she treated them just like diapers, so they were useless for us. I thought she learned pretty easily, with little stress on anyone. It helped that she was almost 3 years old and understood everything that was going on...it worked better for us to wait until that point because things went much easier! We'll see what happens with my son. Now that we're cloth diapering (we didn't with DD) I may try using the cloth trainers instead of disposables for outings, etc. He's only 18 mo., so most likely we won't be worrying about potty training for a year yet.

Denise said...

We have always started with training pants, pull-ups were brand new on the market when our oldest trained...we weren't impressed.

I like to take training slow, so we keep the regular underwear as a reward for doing well in the trainers.

Well, I have been using the pull ups with my son with absolutely no results, he could care less if he wets them because they are just like a diaper. I am switching to training pants so he will feel that he has wet and associate it with what he felt before he went. Hope it works, at least for the days. I know it will be a bit longer before he is ready to be trained through the night.

I don't like waterproof trainers because *I* get lazy and just let them go in the pants. Bad, I know. I put them in regular underwear, and they get a piece of candy for every drop they put in the toilet. For my son, that meant peeing every 10 minutes. But hey, at least his pants were dry! The rules: mommy has to see the pee/poop in the toilet. If she can't see it, it doesn't count. When he went dry for a good long time (two weeks or more) we stopped doing the candy thing, and enjoying wet pants was a distant memory. Worked like a charm.

We have had great success using regular underwear during the day and diapers at night and nap. But, I think an absorbent trainer would work better- no diapers at all to confuse the child as to when they can or cannot go in their pants! Yes using regular underwear is a little messy at first, but it only took our daughters 2-3 days (in a row)of infrequent accidents to make it to the toilet every time!

Monday comment: After reading these comments, I think I might have to try regular underpants. My daughter doesn't react at all to the pull-ups we've tried. She somewhat notices that she's wet in her training pants. Perhaps regular underwear is what we'll need to try next...or going around with a bare bottom for a little bit during the day. We'll see - it looks like it will be a cold week around here so if we stay inside a lot, it might be a good time to attempt some of these ideas! To all: Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Tuesday comment: Pull-ups haven't worked for us at all. I've found that my daughter assumes they are diapers. She hasn't acted any different with training pants either (she'll walk around soaking wet). And the waterproof covers were useless over the training pants (the puddle that appeared on our couch was proof)! The next step will be attempting regular underpants or maybe going pantless, but I might wait until it is a little warmer (it's cold in Minnesota today and although we are inside, there are still chilly spots in the house that aren't comfy for naked bums - LOL). :)
