Why Serena LOVES cloth?

Photobucket
Feeling the LOVE!
Many people consider cloth diapering old-fashioned, out-dated, or just plain icky. My own mother, who cloth diapered my oldest brother, tried convincing me I would hate cloth diapering. “It will make your whole house smell.” My mom knows me well; she knows exactly how much I detest messes and smells. She figured this tactic alone would discourage me from cloth diapering. However, unwavering in my desire and decision to cloth diaper I assured her I was comfortable with my decision. She remained cynical, simply saying, “Okay, we’ll just wait and see.”

Initially, I started cloth diapering with bumGenius One Size Pocket diapers. I also purchased some used prefolds and covers because I wanted to be able to save my pocket diapers from all the excess wear and tear in the early weeks when my little guy would be a mean little poo’ing machine!

Although for the first several weeks I was predominantly using prefolds and Thirsties covers, I most recently starting showing my pocket diapers some much needed love and attention. I love the rainbow of colors and various prints to choose from. If my son is wearing a multiple-blue stripped shirt or romper I can put him in a Blue Blueberry One Size diaper one moment and a Twilight bumGenius One Size Pocket diaper the next. Hot outside? Then he’ll be sporting a white t-shirt with a Cow print Happy Heiny’s One Size diaper and a Monkey print diaper the next. (I’m also looking forward to the new Turtle print Bumwear One Size diapers I ordered after seeing how cute they were on Katrina’s son in last weeks post!)
Having used disposable diapers I can say with certainty, changing a disposable diaper is absolutely no fun. It’s a long standing joke between men and women about who should change the dirty diaper… With cloth diapers, I honestly look forward to the next diaper change! Of course, I’m not doing a happy dance when my little guy poo’s – but I’m certainly not dreading the diaper change! It truly is a lot of fun to decide on which color, print, or even style of diaper I’m going to put on my little man’s bum. Whether I want to take a little more time and put on a prefold and cover or I need to change the diaper in a jiffy and I reach for a pocket diaper – I’ve got plenty of options to keep things interesting!

Additionally, I love having the freedom to change my son as frequently as I want without worrying about tossing money in the trash. I feel ashamed to admit this, but when I used disposables on my daughters I would oftentimes leave them just a little longer because I truly believed (and still do believe) disposables were a waste of money.

I wanted to cloth diaper because I knew deep-down it was more natural and healthier as well as economical. I never imagined I would love it as much as I do. My husband thinks I’m hilarious! With a hearty laugh he asks, “You write about poo?” However, considering he grew up in a country and time when cloth diapering was the only way to diaper, it’s hard for him to understand and appreciate the need for our rapidly growing cloth diapering community.

I genuinely LOVE cloth diapering and clearly, talking about it too! It’s healthy. It’s economical. It’s eco-responsible. Most importantly (to me) it’s a LOT OF FUN!

I feel the same way. I love, love, love Cloth Diapering my DD. I also started out putting her in sposies and I actually left her in them longer than she should have been at times simply because the chemicals made it so that I could not always tell she was wet until she was super saturated. And then came along the UTI. I'm convinced it was from the stupid sposies.

The only person I originally knew that did cloth was my Aunt and she highly discouraged it. But once I started and she saw the new way to do cloth, she said she had wished she had those options when her kids were babies.

Living in hot, humid FL, it's wonderful to be able to put my DD in a t-shirt and a cute diaper and have it look like an outfit and she is nice and cool.

I just love your posts! You summed up my sentiments exactly! One of my aunties actually thinks that my daughter is thriving because I spend so much time with her on the changing table. Diaper time is fun time!

I feel the same way about sposies. And when I have used them I'd leave them in them longer just because I see money in the trash. Not to mention that it can't be comfortable for them to be in those plastic itchy diapers, it makes me sad to think of a little bum not covered in some comfortable, (cute) fluff.

People think I'm silly but I love my diapers. I love accessorizing them with her outfits. My favorite is just a t-shirt, diaper and some babylegs.

Thanks for the great post Serena! And I love seeing all the pics of your little guy sporting the variety of dipes you have. Truely something to get jealous about :)

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I never imagined I would cloth diaper, let alone grow to love it so much. Kind of funny how changing a diaper can be so much fun. Your little guy is a cutie - he looks so happy in his fluff.

Me too!!! And, now that my 2 daughters are older, they love to pick out their own diapers, usually matching the color to their clothes or pajamas! I'm sure they will help me color coordinate DD#3 when she arrives later next month!

I thought it was funny too when my Mom and MIL thought I was a bit strange for wanting to use cloth, especially since that is all they could use.

I do love the variety of cloth and cannot wait until the weather gets warmer and my LO can just crawl around in a diaper!!

Thanks Ladies!!!

I know there are a LOT of folks out there who think we're silly, and some think we're downright crazy for loving cloth diapers... Oh well - I think it's crazy to, quite literally in my opinion, THROW money away!

Cloth diapers and SHOPPING for cloth diapers is soooo much fun. Everyday I peruse Kelly's Closet on things I'd like to buy/try!!! We should have a KCAA blog (Kelly's Closet Addicts Anonymous)
However, The Cloth Diaper Whisperer will have to do for now!!!

Thanks for the encouragement, Serena! People are trying to convince me I will also dislike cloth diapering right now (baby's due in May). I'm primarily doing it for the cost savings and environmental reasons, so it's great to hear someone thinks it can be fun as well.

I totally agree with your comment about changing as often as you want without feeling you are wasting money. When my son was first born, we weren't using cloth. As you know, newborns go through a ton of diapers! I felt like each diaper was a quarter that was taken away from his college fund!

Hahahaha....Serena, I think that the CDW blog IS already a KCAA blog (Kelly's Closet Addicts Anonymous).

My mom still makes fun of me for liking cloth diapers so much. Great article.

I think its hilarious that older generations that had to CD try to discouragous us from doing it now! My Mom cant believe that I would choose to CD when I have other options!

That is awesome, exactly how I feel, thanks for sharing!

I wish that I had more colors and styles to choose from.

You have a cute collection.

I think it's interesting that some of the most negative comments regarding cloth diapers came from my mom and mother-in-law as well... Now that they see how easy diapers are now they're very on-board, but I'm always surprised that the older generation isn't 100% for cloth diapering.

Serena,

Masha'Allah Ilyas is a cutie!... Wow, I've totally missed or dropped the ball on the whole coordinating dipes w tops/outfits!!! Will definitely reconsider especially during Spring/Summer.

Some of my in laws have said "you change her too often." One told me proudly that she usually only changes her son (20 months) 3 times a day. I couldn't figure out why she would do that, but now I get it...to cut down on the amt of dipes...OHHHHH. Glad, I don't have to worry about that just chuck the dirty dipes in the wash/dryer/rack and I'm good to go.

Loving CD'n more and more each day.

Lol, what a great post Serena! I completely agree with you about the cloth being fun, I never thought I would love it either just thought I would do it for the economical part. Even with my stash consisting mostly of pfs, its fun!

I agree so very much! Good Post. My husband calls it my addiction, or obsession. CD is just so much fun! I get a little thrill every time I look at her wiggling little cloth bottom. I can't afford the store bought ones right now but I have been venturing into the sew-my-own world and I can't help feeling proud when I see a CD I made that works well. And she loves it too. It has revolutionized our diapering.
