What I Grab and Why

I’ve noticed that lately I’ve been rather consistent on the type of diaper I grab at different diaper changes throughout the day. I tend to grab a pocket diaper, usually a bumGenius 3.0 or Blueberry first thing in the morning if Brendan, my 17 month old, hasn’t messed his overnight diaper. I have found it easier to knock off the solids with my diaper sprayer from a lined pocket, than the other types of diapers in my stash.

If he’s already done his big messy diaper for the day, I will move right on to my current favorite diaper…my Kiwi Pie Fitteds. I love the cute patterns, and the terrific fit they give me on my skinny little man. Since he is a rather heavy wetter, I usually double up the diaper with an additional insert between the diaper and the cover. Right now I have Kissaluvs Diaper Doublers, bumGenius Stay Dry Diaper Doublers, and Thirsties Fab Doublers, but I’m anxious to add some bamboo doublers to my stash due to their incredible absorbency. I finish up the diaper change with a waterproof cover, my current favorite being Thirsties and Wonder Wraps. My only wish is that they came in snaps – my little guy has become quite good at unhooking the Velcro – even when it’s concealed underneath his clothing! As soon as I can add more to my stash, I plan on trying a Blueberry One-Size Coverall – I love the cute patterns and the fact that they are available in snaps.

Another frequent go to diaper for daytime, as well as afternoon naps, are my Birdseye Cotton flat diapers. I have been folding one in the traditional style, and then adding a second one folded up as a doubler in the center of the diaper. I then lay it in the diaper cover and put it on Brendan. Sometimes I use a snappi, but most days my little guy can’t lay still during diaper changes, so I usually just skip that step.

At night time, I use my bumGenius 3.0’s exclusively. I stuff them with a Super Do Insert and we’re ready to go for 12 hours without leaks. I first purchased these inserts for use with my 3 year old for nighttime, but now that he’s night time trained, I have switched them to my youngest son’s night time diaper. I was hesitant at first due to the cost per insert, but as soon as I tried the first one, I bought two more right away. They are by far the best night time insert and worth every dollar.

I am itching to try the Kiwi pie fitted. I want it for overnight though - maybe I will get a doubler or two as well.

I love the super do inserts for overnight too. They are well worth the cost.

are fitteds suppose to be more absorbant than pockets? I think the kiwi pies are cute but seems pocket is easier than fitteds&covers? I only have one kind of diaper and they are pockets. Im interested though in trying out fitteds

I need so much help. I am a total cloth diapering newbie. I have a 3 year old who is potty training (in big boy underwear except for at night) and a 2 year old, prone to bad diaper rash. He is mostly using g-diapers right now. We are expecting our third baby in January and I would like to cloth diaper but I'm intimidated for sure!

I have won a couple giveaways so I have 3 handmade microfiber AIOs and 1 fleece Lollidoo Overnight Pocket diaper. I am finding that both boys wet through the diapers by halfway through the night, so I need a solution to that (they can often get by with a g-diaper and two inserts).

Can you tell me more about the Bum Genius 3.0? Ie. what kind of diaper it is, why it's so good at night, and what other diapers are similar?

Thank you for any advice you might have!!!!

At night I ALWAYS grab my double stuffed SmartiPants.. 12-13 hours of sleep and we've never experienced any leaking!

Marin: The bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diapers are a well loved choice for night because the diaper fits most babies really well (it doesn't necessarily fit every baby - but for the overwhelming majority - it fits well). The benefit to pocket diapers at night is you can adjust the absorbency to meet the needs of your little ones.

Usually AIO's are great for daytime use - but not so good for night-time unless you're able to add additional absorbency or if you're little one doesn't wet very heavily at night (however, from the sound of it both your little ones wet quite a bit at night).

Depending on how heavy your little one's wet - we typically recommend the bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diaper using both of the inserts the diaper comes with. Now, if your little one wets heavily and can leak through those two inserts then we recommend the Super Do Prewashed hemp inserts - either alone or combined with the One Size Micro-terry insert the bumGenius comes with. This would provide the maximum coverage (a total of 5 layers of micro-terry fiber and 6 layers of hemp).

Other great night-time solutions are fitted diapers with hemp doublers and a wool cover over the diaper.

I hope this helps!

The Kiwi pie fitted diaper requires a cover, right? So why do they make such cute patterns if they're just going to be covered up? Do they make cute covers to go along? I'm confused? I've only used AIOs so far, nothing that required a cover. So I don't quite understand the fitted/cover thing. I want to learn!

As a new to cloth mom, I love hearing what people grab!

I have some fitteds but really need to get covers for them. Right now, I only use them at home and I know even at home may not work when he gets bigger!

My youngest is one for whom Bum Genius 3.0 just do not fit/work well (or maybe it is me ;)

My go to diaper for the daytime is almost always a prefold with a wool cover. I have Imse Vimse bumpy wool covers and I LOVE them. I also use some hand knitted wool covers. I do have some Bummis Super Whisper wraps and I use them on the day that I wash my wool (which is infrequent).

For night time I usually use a Rocky Mountain One Size or a Fuzzi Bunz. I stuff with one microfiber insert and one hemp insert or with a prefold and one of the above.

Oh my gosh! I looked up the Blueberry One-Size Coverall's and I think that I will be getting one (or 5) of them soon too! I only have 4 covers right now and am starting to love my unbleached Indian Prefolds for all daytime diaper changes and only use my BG 3.0's at night.

I've had many friends tell me their "go to" diaper is a BG3 and Blueberry! I am thinking these might need to become apart of our stash! Thanks for sharing your favs! i am getting ready to CD for the second time and want to expand beyond FBs. :)

I want to try some kiwi pie fitteds! They are too cute. We use bumgenius 3.0s pretty exclusively over here.

For those of you who use bumgenius 3.0 pocket diapers at night, have you had "stink issues" from the microfiber inserts?

Thanks for the rec for the Super Do inserts--I haven't tried CDs for overnight yet since I've been afraid of leaks, but I think I will give these a try

I think we need to petition Thirsties to make their regular covers with snaps :o)

It's really cool to see what other moms use and why they like them- especially when I am trying to decided what other kind of diaper to get for our upcoming munchkins!

I've noticed that I have certain ones I grab at different times of the day to - first thing in the morning, almost nap time, getting ready to go out, near the end of the day.

Thanks for letting us know about the Super Do inserts! I've been looking for a night time solution. It's hard when inserts can be quite expensive. It's good to hear about something that works for you!

I'm so jealous that the superdo inserts work for your son at night. I've heard so many great reviews of them, but they still aren't absorbant enough for my heavy wetting stomach sleeping daughter.

Ryan and Amy: Yes, if you're looking to avoid any possible wetness then you would need to use a diaper cover with the Kiwi Pie fitteds as they are fitted diapers that do not have a waterproof outer material.

However, the Kiwi Pie fitted are very absorbent so we personally opt to use the diaper without a cover and just pay attention to when the diaper becomes damp on the outside and change the diaper. I've even braved going outside with a Kiwi Pie and no over - we just add a hemp doubler for extra backup and we're able to get by without a cover and no leaks/wetness!

Ashley: Nighttime diapers do typically have a stronger smell than your daytime diapers will - considering the diaper likely has 10-12 hours worth of pee! However, if the diapers are overly offensive smelling then it's likely the inserts have a buildup of bacteria and you will need to bleach the inserts (only the inserts not the diapers) to help restore the micro-terry fiber back to new again.

While natural fibers (such as cotton and hemp) do a better of job of reducing the occurrence of smells- they too can stink so it's not necessarily exclusive to the micro-terry - however, micro-terry is far more troublesome when it comes to stink issues.

I hope this helps!
