Expecting the Unexpected!

I have three beautiful, wonderful children. An almost five year old son, a one year old daughter and a five month old daughter. I love them more than words can say. As I write this my one year old daughter is asleep on my bed next to me, my five year old son is attending his second day of kindergarten and my five month old daughter is being held and fed by someone I have never met. What?!?! How can that be?

My five-month old daughter is being cared for by someone else - someone I do not know - because she is waiting for us to come get her in Ethiopia. We are currently in the process of adopting her.

This process has been long and we’ve experienced many unexpected delays. Several twists and turns have left us unsure of what will happen at any moment. We cannot be certain when exactly our youngest daughter will ready to come home, to us. This leaves us in a difficult position when determining what size she’ll be when she finally arrives!

I suppose we could wait until we have travel dates to get any clothes or diapers for her - but the truth is having things for her helps. Since we do have a daughter who is not that much older than our youngest we have been able to fill her closet and drawers with clothes her sister has outgrown. I’m hopeful the general size difference between them will allow the seasons to work out well.

What about the diapers? Obviously I cannot buy smalls as she has already likely outgrown size small. However, what if the medium size is just too big, or even too small? What to do?

I’ve opted to go ahead and start building a nice stash of one size diapers for her. So far, her stash consists of 15 bumGenius One Size 3.0 Pocket diapers, 3 bumGenius Organic All-in-One One Size diapers and 3 Smartipants diapers. This way I have diapers I can use when she arrives, regardless of her size!

Her stash is not yet complete... I’d like to add 2 Gro Baby shells and 6 soakers (since I have time I am waiting for the new patterns to come out). Additionally, for overnight use I plan to add 4 Kiwi Pie fitted diapers to the mix too.

By opting for one size diapers and getting a little of everything I prefer - I will have a decent stash ready and waiting just for her. We can’t wait to go to Ethiopia and pick her up - and YES, we plan to use cloth diapers while we are there!

What an incredible journey you are on right now. Hope you're holding your little girl in your arms and changing her fluff really soon! Looks like you've got a great stash for her - if you haven't used smartipants before, you're going to love them!

Congrats on the adoption. I hope everything works out great for you. One-size diapers seem like a great option. My son was in 6-9 mo. clothes at 6 weeks because he just grew so fast. I would've wasted a lot of money if I had bought smalls.

Congrats on your new daughter!! I'm a huge fan of one size diapers myself. In fact, almost our entire diaper stash consists of one size diapers along with our newborn size diapers since my babies tend to be small.
I am really looking forward to the grobaby prints, they are all absolutely adorable, I wonder when they will be in stock?

AWE, beauty of a story to boot! We LOVE one sized dipes in our house. They still fit GREAT on our chubby legged 2 yr old when she's outgrown (just the leg portion)of every other dipe in our house! Some of the one-size companies even have extenders which makes them even MORE awesome!

I have had a preemie & a 10 lb. newborn come home amongst my children. you NEVER know what size they will be when they arrive, no matter HOW they get home! We love prefolds for the teenies & one size for the rest of the stages! awesome what they've come out with in my 12 years of parenting!

OH & keep us posted on this new "baby" we're all waiting for the BIG news!
