CBS Reporter Accepts Cloth Diaper Challenge

After CBS Eye on Parrenting reporter, Natali Del Conte-Morris, did a one-sided segment last week called The Diaper Wars: Cloth Vs. Disposable, she was inundated with comments questioning why there was such a one-sided slat when presenting diapering options. In the segment she pitted the two diapering types against one another; yet, the expert she featured, Dr. Alanna Levine, gave a very skewed look on these so-called "options." She showed old-fashioned pre-fold and flat diapers that you pin on baby vs. cute and comfy modern day cloth diapers like those invented by the likes of FuzziBunz and Thirsties. Dr. Levine further shares that she personally uses disposable diapers because, she expertly reports, "I heard from the EPA that this kind of waste [baby's poop] isn't the worst kind of waste there is," and that she "couldn't imagine throwing that [cloth diapers] in the wash as well" with all the laundry she already has to do. Ms. Del Conte-Morris happily agreed.

More than 360 people commented on the online segment, blasting the journalist for presenting such a one-sided piece in an inaptly titled segment, "The Diaper Wars." Not only did the comments come in, but both Ms. Del Conte-Morris said she was getting heated emails about the topic. That's when Ms. Del Conte-Morris realized she needed to do something about it.

Commendably, she is taking on what she is calling, "The Cloth Diaper Challenge," and will try modern cloth diapers on her baby. She blogged about her acceptance of the challenge here:

She has received hundreds of more comments, this time from supportive moms, along with manufacturers and retailers who all want in on the action (no matter what diaper(s) she tries, we need to support and recognize her efforts!!)

We'll see what Ms. Del Conte-Morris chooses to try and how her experience goes. For good or bad, all we can ask is that moms like Ms. Del Conte-Morris give cloth diapers a try. Trying before forming an opinion is the best way to be an "expert" and present a fair and balanced looked at "the diaper wars." We are thrilled that Ms. Del Conte-Morris is going to try cloth diapers - and become a true expert as "the diaper wars" rage on.

I am just glad that she is giving it a try. Everyone should try cloth diapering at least once.

I was one of the CD'ing moms that commented both on the CBS site and on her blog rebuttal, and I'm glad she's accepting the challenge! I really hope that CBS lets her do a follow-up. They owe it to all the modern cloth diapers out there - they need some publicity, not just old fashioned prefolds!

I an very interested to see how this pans out... I saw the segment and also felt it was extremely one sided and completely outdated. I thought that they should have shown a variety of diapers instead of the gerber prefolds (which the doctor could not even figure out how to use). I really hope that they follow up with another online segment showing the different diapers she used and how it went

I was so upset after watching this segment the day it came out. I was one of the comments blasting her for sure. However, I am extremely happy she is giving it a try. Today she talked about finally understanding how cute cloth diapering was! I wish her the best of luck and really hope she sees the fluffy side of things.

That's awesome! I think that shows that people can have a voice by speaking out against poor reporting. I'm interested to see what her views are after she tries them.

I was also one who left a comment on Natali's blog about her "journalism" but I have respect for her now that she listened to our comments and learned from it - that cloth is at least worth a try!

i'm so glad she was up for the challenge! i really hope she is able to record a new segment on cloth diapering once her trial is through. my guess is that she'll be as passionate about cd-ing as the cd community is once she gets the swing of things.

I give her some credit on retrying to cd after views and companies have commented on her one sided research/opinion. I hope in the overall outcome that she is as enthusatic and excited to cd after her trial/research is completed this time. I know I am interested in knowing the outcome and know there are more out there iterested as well. Best of luck to her!
