The Only Right Way to Cloth Diaper Your Baby

Whether you are pregnant with your first child or hoping to transition from disposables to cloth diapers for an older or future baby, one thing is for sure. There is a lot to learn when entering the cloth diaper world.

For starters, there are a lot of different kinds of cloth diapers. There are flats and fitteds and prefolds. There are diaper covers and hybrids. There are all-in-ones and all-in-twos. And then there are pockets, which raise the equally daunting issue of inserts and all of their various sizes, materials, pros, and cons. And then, of course, there are all the different brands and colors and prints.

It's no wonder that cloth diapering can seem a bit intimidating, at first. Most people – and by people, I really mean mothers – find that the best way to start cloth diapering is to start small and figure out what they like and then add to their stash over time. That way, they can learn as they go and find out what works best for them.

Even if you do this, however, you still might find yourself faced with some kind of problem that needs a bit of troubleshooting along the way, especially in the first few days and weeks of diapering. When this happens, you will likely turn to the internet as a resource, where you will find a large, welcoming community of cloth diapering mothers who are happy to help you find a solution.

Within this community, you may also find a few mamas who are happy to help you find their solution. For whatever reason, sometimes women get a little nuts over cloth diapering matters. You may even come across heated arguments about laundry detergent. (I'm not joking.) Fortunately, though, cooler heads usually prevail, and most people you encounter will be very helpful.

One of the many fun things about cloth diapering is that everyone has a slightly different routine than the next gal. Maybe you like to do an extra rinse at the end of your wash cycle. Maybe you don't. Maybe you like to store your diapers in a wet bag. Maybe you're a diaper-pail-with-a-lid kind of girl. Maybe you want to use disposables for travel. Maybe you are so into cloth diapering that you are willing to hand wash your diapers in the bathtub at your hotel. (By the way, this is just one of many reasons to always pack a little Lysol in your overnight bag when you are hotel-bound. I recently watched a hidden camera investigation that provided quite a few other reasons, but I digress.)

Either way, as you explore the world of cloth diapering, always remember that there is only one right way to cloth diaper your baby, and that is your way. If you find a diaper that works for you, use it. If you find a wash routine that gets your diapers sparkling white and smelling like a fresh summer breeze, stick with it. It is always good to listen to other ideas, and you may even sometimes find things you like better. But ultimately, as long as you and your baby are happy, keep on rolling.

Welcome to the cloth diapering world, and good luck!
