As you know hemp has been widely used in cloth diapers for a number of years. Yes- I know just mentioning the word "hemp" might get some of you to grin! It is a pure fact that hemp comes from the same family as marijuana- the Cannabis genus.

From a quick look hemp looks very similar to marijuana however hemp contains no THC which is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

Hemp fibers are 3-4 times stronger than cotton fibers and it grows with very little care and usually no pesticides need to be used because the plant has no known insect enemies. Hemp is also much more absorbent that cotton.

Due to USA regulations hemp is not allowed to be grown legally in the states. This is why the cost of hemp products, including diapers that contain hemp, are relatively much higher in cost than a traditional cotton diaper.

Hemp is usually found in the following type of fabric forms:

Hemp fleece-widely used in cloth diapers.
Hemp knit jersey-which is comparable to the feel of regular cotton t-shirts.
Hemp french terry-usually a hemp and organic cotton blend
Hemp stretch-knit terry-a blend of hemp and Lycra- very absorbent and used in some brands of cloth diapers

What you need to know about hemp and cloth diapers:

If you purchase a diaper or diaper accessory product (like BabyKicks Hemparoo Joey Bunz) keep in the mind the following:

Wash the product at least 3 times (5 times is more ideal) in hot water with a cloth diaper friendly detergent. Dry in between cycles. This will remove most of the natural oils from the product. As you use the product more it will become more absorbent.

Make sure that when you dry your diapers that they get completely dry. If the diaper(s) stay semi-damp (for example: if you don't put them in the dryer long enough) they can be prone to retaining odor. To remove the stink we recommend washing and drying in hot water 3 times. To remove stains hang in the sun if possible.

Some interesting facts about hemp (taken from the BabyKicks "Why Hemp" Web Page):

Did you know ...

*Hemp can displace cotton which is grown with massive amounts of chemicals harmful to people and the environment. Fifty percent of the world's pesticides are sprayed on cotton.
*Hemp fibers are longer, stronger, more absorbent, and more mildew-resistant than cotton. The original Levi Strauss jeans made for the Sierra gold miners were made of hemp sailcloth.
*At a volume level of 81%, hemp oil is the richest known source of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (the “good” fats). It is quite high in some essential amino acids, including gamma linoleic acid (GLA), a very rare nutrient also found in mother's milk.
*Hemp is good for the soil in which it's grown, as opposed to other crops that deplete the soil of nutrients.
*You can't get high from industrial hemp.
*Industrial hemp actually poses a threat to marijuana growers by cross-pollinating with their high THC plants, and greatly reducing the THC level in subsequent generations.
*George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp.
*Ben Franklin owned a mill that made hemp paper.
*Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence on hemp paper.

Some hemp diapering products we recommend:

BabyKicks Hemparoo Joey Bunz- made of 45% certified organic cotton and 55% natural hemp- these are truly the "work-horse" off all hemp inserts.

Knickernappies Super-Do Hemp Terry Inserts: We find this is the most absorbent insert on the market- hands down. This insert contains 6 layers of hemp terry and 2 layers of thirsty microfiber. We use this insert along with a bumGenius one-size micro terry insert in our pocket diapers for our baby. A 12+ hour night with no leaks- guaranteed!

Baby Beehinds One Size Hemp Fitted Diaper- These diapers are made from 55% hemp and 45% certified organic cotton. Baby BeeHinds Hemp Fitteds offer a 100% natural fiber option with flexibility in fit and absorbency, enabling you to adjust the diapers to suit your baby's own needs.

* Brief intro about Baby Beehinds and the inventor
Baby BeeHinds was established in early 2004, by Davina, who still runs this energetic and customer focused company! Back in the early days, Davina had no plans to go in to business...rather, she simply liked sewing nappies for her new baby girl.

Eventually her baby had far too many nappies so Davina started sewing for friends, and then at their prompting, launched publicly with some auctions on ebay. In those days, the cloth nappy market in Australia was ultra ultra new...there were not many modern cloth nappy options at all available and so the public immediately latched on to Baby BeeHinds and all of a sudden Davina's fun little hobby turned in to a very busy home business!

Eventually, the demand got too great and so after much thought, Davina investigated outsourcing production, and with ethics in mind, found a fantastic factory to produce the qantities required with the quality she had in mind. Since this time, Baby BeeHinds has grown exponentially, branching in to wholesale, party plan and retail markets. Still, the fundamental values of the company remain- that is quality, excellent customer service, and ethical manufacturing standards.

Baby BeeHinds also likes to support those who are disadvantaged, with charitable contributions made financially and some 2500-3000 nappies donated thus far to orphanages in Africa.

* Short description of your products, when they were invented, the materials they're made of, etc...
We offer a range of products. Fitted nappies of a one-size-fits-most design, made from hemp or bamboo, one-size-fits most pocket nappies and stuffable all-in-one nappies made with lush minkee, wetbags, boosters, PUL and woollen nappy covers etc. Over the years, all of our products have gone through improvement processes where based on customer feedback, we make slight changes to a product's shape, fabrics, composition etc.

We take customer feedback on board to ensure our products meet the needs of parents. At present, we are confident our products have reached their peak in quality and reliability, and their popularity seems to be testimonial to this! At the moment, Baby BeeHinds is incredibly busy, which is fantastic!

* Why choose Baby Beehinds?
Ultimately, a customer needs to be happy with not only the product they receive, but also the service they receive from whichever company they choose to deal with. Here at Baby BeeHinds, we treat our customers how we ourselves would want to be treated, if we were the customer. When you're in business it is so easy to be so focused on what is right in front of your nose, and that is the day to day running of the business itself.

However, we feel it is important to maintain the reality that the customer sees our business from a different perspective to how we see it ourselves, and so we like to remain grounded and connect with our business from multiple perspectives. Our customers are very important to us, and so we aim to please however we can and maintain prompt, fair and polite service at all times!

In addition to this, quality is such a very high priority to us, and so while now and then, something may slip by with a fault, the majority of Baby BeeHinds products are sewn with impeccable quality. This leads on to our final priority- ethics in manufacture. Our products are made in Asia, and a very real concern for any products made in Asia have to do with the conditions in which the manufacturing is taken place. When researching the outsourcing of production, my number 1 focus was to find a manufacturer who looked after their employees and maintained safe working conditions at all times.

It took some time, however finally, we were blessed and found the most wonderful, wonderful factory. They are amazing, offering fantastic opportunities and incentives for their employees. They have a very low staff turnover (due to the excellent pay and working conditions) and everyone works together as a team. The maternity leave opportunities that they offer their employees are better than anything we even have here in Australia, and their wages are 20% higher than the average for the industry. They also receive benefits such as holiday and sick pay and each year, twice a year, all employees go on a group trip together to build their team skills and connect on a personal level. We make regular trips to the factory to ensure everything is functioning as it should be, and enjoy the trips immensley as it is wonderful to catch up with those we regularly deal with via email! So yeah, overall, we're pretty proud of our dedication to customer service, quality and ethics here at Baby BeeHinds!

Fluff Friday Week 30 *** CLOSED ***

I began my fun journey into cloth diapering by purchasing three different brands of diapers to try before buying more. I purchased one BumGenius 3.0, one Happy Heiny One-Size, and a Fuzzi Bunz. From my research, I knew I wanted to start with pocket diapers and that one-size diapers would be the most economical. After testing these three diapers for almost a month, I then ordered 12 Bumgenius 3.0. Recently, I added two Baby Beehinds Bamboo fitteds and a Bummis SuperBrite cover to my stash. This allows me to wash diapers every other day.

From our current stash, my favorite diaper is our BG 3.0 in Zinnia. I just find it to be so cute on my daughter. We only have two Zinnia diapers because I wanted most of the others to be gender neutral. Here's a photo of her wearing it...doesn't she even look happy? I like the BG 3.0 because they are one-size and the quality on them is great.

My least favorite diaper is our Happy Heiny One-Size. I really wanted to like this diaper since it has a snap closure. However, I have had several leaks with it. I think the fit just doesn't work well for my daughter.

My favorite bedtime diapers are the Baby Beehinds Bamboo fitteds with the SuperBrites cover. The Baby Beehinds are exceptionally absorbant and I don't have a strong pee/amonnia smell in the morning like what I did when we used our BG 3.0 overnight.

So, while it is fun & exciting to try different brands/types of diapers, it is also possible to cloth diaper full-time with a smaller stash too!
