Fluff Friday 161 Winner!
With our first child, I shuddered at the thought of cloth diapering. I had decided it was not for me before really knowing anything about it. Then, one of my closest new mom friends started cloth diapering and learning and sharing more about it. I became somewhat interested, but my husband was adamantly against it, and being a law student married to a law student, we already struggled to keep up with adult sized laundry, let alone that of our new babe. Then, with our second child, things in our lives were even more hectic, my husband was taking the California Bar Exam just 4 days after our second baby was born. He maintained his reservations, and told me that he would not change a cloth diaper. Thus, due to circumstance, it just wasn't an option for us.
Then, however, when our first daughter was about 3 years old and finally potty trained during the day, and our then 19 month old was nowhere near being potty trained, I became frustrated and appalled at how much we were spending on diapers. (I am painfully aware of the waste treatment issues and the fact that it takes 500 years for a disposable diaper to decompose). I found myself buying large boxes of diapers to be used for our larger daughter only at night, and for our toddler day and night. Not only was it costly, but incredibly wasteful and daunting. Afterall, the disposable diapers simply did not hold the amount of liquid we needed them to, regardless of brand, size, absorbency. Every night, at around three or four in the morning I would hear the familiar, "Mama! Come change me, my jammies are wet!" and of course they were, along with all of her sheets and blankets. There had to be another way.
It was then that I decided that I was done buying disposables, especially with another little one on the way. I also keep on top of all of our laundry and the girls', I figured it wouldn't be too daunting to do a load of diapers every other day. So, I decided that I would buy cloth diapers, since I could use them for both girls and their soon to be here little brother. Plus, once my three year old is night trained, I can use the diapers for another one of the kids, and it won't be a waste of money or material.
It was important to me to do my research in advance, afterall, I didn't want to buy a diaper that would be too small for a 3 year old, or too big for a newborn. I got in touch with my friend who had CD'ed her two little ones all along, as well as some other moms online, and gave them my two daughters' sizes, and my criteria, and based on that information placed my order. I had heard the prefolds were one of the least expensive ways to get into CD'ing, so I picked up an Econobum, and my friend sent me some that her girls had outgrown, along with a Bummis cover and a Fuzzibunz pocket diaper. I ordered two Thirsties fab fitteds size large that were on sale for my 3 year old to wear at night in addition to two covers and 4 of the BabyKicks joeybunz hemp inserts, since I had heard these worked well overnight. I also picked up a Flip diaper, to see how that compared to pocket diapers.
With my first order from Kelly's Closet, I received a free KaWaii diaper, an economical pocket diaper, and I loved how well they held up for the price, so I made sure to pick up a couple more in my next order. I also ordered a Happy Heinys and a Knickernappies, upon another mom's recommendation, and a bumGenius, for good measure. For my next order, I received a free Rumparooz, which I anticipated as being the perfect fit for our newborn, since big thighs run in our family, and it didn't fit my girls that well. I've since received another Rumparooz, a camoflage Kawaii, and a cow print Kawaii as gifts for my son's stash (thank goodness for cloth diaper baby registries!), and I ordered a few more Econobums and bumGeniuses for my daughters. I try to take full advantage of the different sales, and keep up on reviews from both friends and blogs.
I started out with All Free & Clear, but after reading detergent reviews, was happily surprised to find that our local Whole Food's carries Planet, so I switched to that. My husband admits that the laundry isn't as bad as he thought it was, I got a laundry hamper and drying rack on sale at Ikea, and we've slowly gotten into a comfortable routine. My older daughter comments about the colors of the diapers, and I point out which ones will be for her soon coming little brother. The picture I've attached is of my first order of diapers and prefolds from a friend, which I've since added to. My stash is definitely a source of pride. I only wish it had worked out for our family sooner!

When I first though about cloth diapering, I looked into all my options – I checked out prefolds, flats, pockets, all-in-ones, fitted, covers, liners, and more. I loved the idea of using prefolds or flats and covers but I was not in love with the Indian prefolds I checked out – it seemed a little too bulky for me. Thankfully, someone suggested I look into hemp – I was fortunate to have a local diaper service here in Charlotte that had organic hemp flats as an option for weekly delivery and she gladly brought some over so I could check them out. Up to that point, I had heard a little about hemp but had no idea what an important role it would play in my cloth diaper routine.
Hemp has become such a popular choice in cloth diapering for a variety of reasons. I initially chose to use hemp because it seemed far trimmer than comparably sized cotton prefolds. I quickly learned that the trimness did not at all limit its absorption – in fact, hemp is far more absorbent than its cotton counterparts. Estimates are that hemp can be three times to seven times more absorbent than cotton! Hemp is also a more sustainable crop than cotton – it grows quickly on less land and requires little or no pesticides or herbicides. This is a win-win for me!
I began my journey with hemp using Willow Sprout organic hemp flats and Babykicks hemp flats secured with a Snappi and covered with a Bummis Super Whisper Wrap or Thirsties Duo Wrap cover. The combination worked great for my little guy during the day. However, as my baby got bigger and slept longer, I needed a better nighttime solution than a hemp flat and a cover. I started using pocket diapers at night – mainly Bumgenius or Fuzzibunz – but that wasn’t doing the trick either. Hemp to the rescue… I took my hemp flat, folded it in half and stuffed it in the pocket as a doubler. Perfect. This worked so well but I kept a lookout for other hemp doubler options that might be a little less bulky. I found that there were a variety of hemp doublers and inserts available so I began to try them out. Hemp Babies Diaper Doublers provided a smaller alternative for stuffing into my BG or Fuzzibunz pocket. These doublers are super thin – I could even add two – and they don’t add much bulk to the diaper at all.
As my 7 pound baby tripled in size and became a 21 pound, five month old monster, I decided to test out hemp flats folded in half and used in a Flip cover. Beautiful! This option was super easy and was easy to execute – fold in half, tuck into the flip cover, put on baby. With the success of hemp on my baby, I quickly realized that hemp would probably be a great addition to my toddler’s nighttime diaper. We have Happy Heiny Trainers, Mother Ease, Green Acre Designs, and Fuzzibunz in our toddler’s stash – adding a hemp doubler to these diapers has completely eliminated any “overflow” issues that we would occasionally experience at night. No more wet sheets!
Using hemp has worked out really well for us. Hemp is naturally anti-microbial and anti-bacterial, I haven’t had any residual odor issues like I have had with some of my microfleece inserts. Hemp washes well but it can take quite a while to dry! Having spoken to other moms, the other downsides to hemp seem to be that if your child is a quick and heavy wetter, the hemp might not absorb the liquid fast enough so you might experience some leaking if you are using hemp alone. Also, when you first add hemp to your stash, the prep time might take longer than you are used to! Hemp requires 4 or 5 prewashes – washing and drying – before you can start to use it. Don’t be surprised if the hemp shrinks a bit as well – and becomes softer with each wash. Truthfully, the hemp might not even be fully absorbent for another 4 or 5 washes. Of course, the final downside for some might be the cost. Hemp definitely costs more. But, in my experience, it is worth every penny. Add some hemp to your stash and test out the magical mysteries of this material for yourself!

Fluff Friday 99
Since July, BabyKicks has offered a free online cloth diaper class for anyone who is willing to tune in. The class was started in response to the need to spread the word about cloth diapering. Many people are so used to the idea of disposable diapers that using cloth doesn't even cross their mind. So, we started thinking that if an online class was available to everyone so they can watch at home, at work (during lunch of course), or wherever they have internet access than people would be more likely to choose cloth over disposables. And, this makes it easier for dads and caregivers to learn about the many benefits and just how easy cloth diapering really is. Plus, there are so many cloth diapering options available today and so few local retailers that specialize in them that it can be hard to decide what type of diaper will work best for every family.
In our Cloth Diaper 101 webinars we explain the different types of cloth diapers, closures, how to wash, how to store, environmental impact, and of course the money savings. We have had an excellent turn out so far, and during our first class we had about 30 unique viewers from all over the United States! We even had a couple of viewers from over seas, and that was great to see. It's so nice knowing we have the support of our customers, retailers, and fellow cloth diaper advocates.We plan to continue holding the webinars as long as there is a demand to learn about cloth diapers. We also want to thank everyone for the support we have received and we hope to convert more and more families as the classes continue. During the class anyone can ask questions through the chat box and our host will answer right then. It's just like any other chat but it will be in the same room with the video stream. Everyone will be able to see and hear the host, but not each other. To watch the webinar, simply follow the website link above or go to www.ustream.tv and type ‘BabyKicks’ in the search box in the top right hand corner. This will take you to BabyKicks broadcasting channel. Anyone can watch, but if you would like to comment or ask questions you must create an account (it's quick, it’s easy, and it’s FREE), and then you will be able to chat with the host and other users. The class will start promptly at 2pm EST and will also be recorded and posted for everyone who is not able to join us at the scheduled time.
We would like to make our Cloth Diaper Webinar a recurring event, maybe once a month, but we need participants to make it happen! We know that everyone has questions and we want to answer them and educate more people about the benefits of cloth diapers so more and more parents make the switch. FREE BabyKicks Cloth Diaper Webinar
I have always been one to really get into special events and holidays. I always use face paint, costumes, and dress accordingly. But, it never occurred to me until recently that I can make my much loved cloth diapers a fun part of the many props I use to celebrate. I have been cloth diapering for almost 2 years now, and I love color and I love when my little ones’ diapers match what they wear.There really is nothing that screams “Use cloth!” like a cute diaper peeking out of little pants that looks like it came with the outfit. This past Independence Day I really wanted to make a statement to everyone and let them know that our family is proud to be in America.
This time, instead of doing it with face paints or crazy hats I decided to show my support by dying one of our BabyKicks Organic Fitted cloth diapers red, white, and blue! This is something I’ve never done before, so I was a little intimidated by it. But, since I have my (most of the time) trusty internet, I did some research and found that it is actually very simple to dye clothes and cloth diapers at home. I went to the one fabric store in our little city and bought 2 colors (Tulip Red and Navy Blue) of the only fabric dye they had, Dylon. I don’t how this compares with other dyes, but since I am a novice I decided to give it a try. I soaked the diaper thoroughly in water and then prepared the dye. The package called for a sink full of water for the “garment” to be dyed correctly, but I wanted the colors to be very rich so I added the recommended amount of water to dissolve the dye completely and that was it. I had extra Tupperware type containers I picked up for one dollar each at the Dollar Store and used them to mix the dye in. I hung the diaper on a hanger with clothespins then dipped half of it into the solution. I held it there for about 2 minutes then let it drip with the hanger attached to the cabinet knob. I was in the kitchen and it worked out great!
I was able to put the plastic container of dye right underneath the diaper without having to worry about a mess. I waited about 10 minutes and when the freshly dipped diaper stopped dripping I carefully, using rubber gloves, turned it around and dipped the opposite side into the second color. Waited 2 minutes and hung it up to drip for another 10 minutes. While the diaper was dripping this time I placed 2 large squares of plastic wrap on the counter, slightly overlapping each other to make one large rectangle. When the diaper was done dripping this time I placed it on the plastic wrap and wrapped it up then put it into a gallon Ziploc bag for 24 hours. After letting the dye set I rinsed, rinsed, rinsed until the water ran clear then washed with some towels to make sure all the excess dye was out. While I was hanging it on the line to dry a smile came across my face.I was very impressed with the results of my “new” patriotic fluff. I have found a new passion for cloth that I didn’t realize was possible. Cute prints have nothing on hand dyed patterns! Next time, I am going to try using more natural methods of dying, such as using roots, vegetables, etc. But, for now, I’m glad I was able to show our love for our country as well as our love for cloth all at the same time!

We have been on a mission to create the perfect one size diaper that is eco friendly and gentle on our babies, and practical and convenient to stand up with the hustle and bustle of our modern day world. During the past few months since the introduction of our Bumboo Pocket diaper we have had outstanding feedback from our retailers and customers. 
Many moms and dads have expressed their satisfaction with our natural inner pocket diaper and how pleased they are that they can finally go through the day without worrying about leaks.
The Bumboo Pocket Diaper offers everything we hoped for in a modern cloth diaper. The natural bamboo fleece is butter soft against baby’s skin and adds an additional layer of absorption. The included JoeyBunz insert is only 1/8 of an inch thick and made with a blend of hemp and organic cotton. And, due to the porous nature of the hemp, our JoeyBunz can handle the heaviest wetter and are not prone to compression leaks. We even took the Bumboo Pocket a step farther and added fleece gussets around the legs to allow air to flow under the waterproof PUL shell.
We have always wanted to keep our cloth diapers as trim as possible. And, we have had to make adjustments in the process. The original version of the Bumboo Pocket was designed to fit from 7-30 lbs. And, over time we realized that this weight range was not realistic for most families. So, after making some changes we have come out with the second version of the diaper, the Bumboo Pocket 2.0. One of the main changes in this version is an additional inch in the waist bringing the weight range up from 30lbs to 35lbs.
If you aren’t sure if the version you have is the original or the 2.0 there is an easy way to find out. All Bumboo Pocket Diapers with green or blue snaps are the original version. The 2.0 version is currently only available in our signature multi-colored snaps. If you have diapers with multi-colored snaps and are unsure if you have the original or the 2.0 then you must look at the control tag (small tag behind the large main tag). All Bumboo Pocket 2.0 version diapers will have this control number: TABKBP3-03-10. Remember, the original Bumboo Pocket Diaper is slightly smaller, but will still fit through most of your baby’s diapering years.

The New, Improved BabyKicks One Size Bumboo Pocket Diaper
My son was born weighing 10 lb. 4 oz. and did not fit into the newborn-sized diapers I purchased for him. He has continued to be large for his age, always measuring in the 95th percentile in height and 80th in weight. Around 18 months old, we had troubles squeezing him into most of his “one-size” diapers, especially nighttime pockets that needed extra stuffing. Friends told me that he’d “slim down” and his diapers would fit well again and that he is not really chubby. He’s just tall and solid and his physique has not changed. By 20 months, diapering was nearly impossible and our son was upset that his diapers were pinching or digging in on his skin. I had to find other solutions.My search began in our own diaper stash. I found his Thirsties large covers still fit perfectly, but the “one-size” fitteds and standard prefolds did not. I ordered large Thirsties Fab Fitteds and found this to be an EXCELLENT combo with plenty of room to grow. The Fab Fitted is so soft and stretchy and the cover is plenty roomy. Also in our home stash, we found FuzziBunz perfect fit diapers in large are also still fitting and working, though on the last hip and waist snaps. Bumkins large all-in-ones fit great and are a favorite with babysitters, grandparents and my husband. But our combined stash of all these items added up to 6 diapers, and I do diaper laundry every OTHER day usually.
Yay! Time for shopping! There are some terrific new options out there! The Sandy’s Toddle-ease fitted paired with a Mother-Ease Air Flow cover in the toddler size is incredibly absorbent and very roomy. I find this combo is a bit bulky, so works best at home with no pants, with stretchy pants like sweats, or with jammies. With a Babykicks Hemparoo Joey Bunz doubler laid inside and a wool soaker cover outside, the Sandy’s Toddle-ease is without a doubt our new nighttime solution.The softest, most comfortable (and hands down ABSOLUTE trimmest under clothing) of our new finds is the Bamboo Baby all-in-one toddler size. My son prefers this diaper and keeps asking for it. (He says, “New softie diaper, please, Mommy!”) The Thirsties Duo diaper in size 2 is a consistent part of our new rotation and like the large Thirsties cover and Fab-Fitted, offers a soft, stretchy diaper with room to grow. One of my favorite finds and the one that will also work when potty-training is the Little Beetle Organic Velour Cotton Learners. These training pants are thick and absorbent where it matters and have worked as well as any diaper with his Thirsties, Mother-Ease airflow or wool soaker covers on top. The Little Beetle Learners are also a great option when we are at home and he can wear them alone to more easily use the potty. They pull on and off like pants, or have snaps on the hips for easy removal when wet or soiled. The Knickernappies side-snapping pocket diaper is also a true fits-to-40-pounds diaper and one my son can’t take off when he wakes up from his naps. (Bonus!)
There are a few brands of one-size diapers from our past diapering (now mostly being used on our 4 month old) that will still work in a pinch, but do exactly that - pinch. It took a bit of research and some trial and error, but keeping our big toddler in cloth that fits until he’s using the potty is the best reward.
