My cloth diapering journey began last year at this time.  Black Friday at Kelly's Closet.  I ordered some fitteds, covers, and some going-out-of-stock GroBaby diapers for some amazing prices.  At the time, I wasn't even pregnant yet.  (My husband didn't find out about my purchases until we discovered we were pregnant with our first child in December....)  Since then, I have bought newborn fitteds, BumGenius All-in-Ones, Mother-ease fitteds, and a couple of pocket one-sizes.  I am, as many cloth diapering mothers have said before me, a cloth addict.

I knew I wanted to cloth diaper since I babysat for a Fuzzi-Bunz cloth diapering family before I was married.  Less smells, less cost, less waste, less rash.  My baby boy, Ezra, was born in August.  We used disposable diapers and wipes for the first two weeks, but then I was looking forward to getting started with my newborn fitteds and covers.  We continued to use disposable wipes until our son was one month old.  Then I brought out the cheap 'baby washcloths' I had bought at a Dollar Store.  I spent $10 and got over 50 wipes.  They work perfectly.

My wipe solution journey was just beginning.  I began with two plastic tubs: one for my wipe solution of a mix of our natural liquid soap (Dr. Bronner's Baby Mild) and water, and the other for just water.  This system worked nicely until, after a couple weeks, our little boy had a tiny red rash on his bottom.  We used some cloth-friendly rash cream, but it still was a persistent rash.  I investigated further, and since Ezra and I were dealing with breastfeeding thrush, I discovered that white distilled vinegar was a good cure-all for mother's nipples and baby's butt.  I changed my wipe solution system to just one tub of two tablespoons vinegar to a couple cups of water.  This worked fine for a month or so, with no rash.

However, one morning, after sleeping in his diaper all night, he woke up with an awful blistery rash.  I didn't want to use vinegar on it, so we used water and diaper rash cream (we used California Baby, but I want to buy a tube of Grandma El's) until it went away, two or three days later.  This sad rash made me investigate wipe solutions even further.  Now, I use one tablespoon vinegar, four drops tea tree oil (a natural anti-microbial essential oil, easy to find at a health food store) and the rest water.  It smells nice and he has now been diaper rash free!

This is the system we use at home, but in the meantime, I was still using disposable wipes on the go.  Two weeks ago I realized that his sweet bottom was getting very red from these disposable wipes, even though I bought the so-called 'sensitive' kind.  Since changing to the tea tree oil solution, I have decided to use cloth wipes on the go as well.  Not only is it better for him (no redness!), but it also saves me from picking though his wet bag to throw away the gross disposables.  Now, I fill a small plastic disposable wipes travel case with soaked cloth wipes and go!  I only need one wipe per diaper change, maybe two for a blowout, as compared to six+ disposable wipes.

I am so excited that I have made the change to all cloth, all the time.  My baby is happier and it is always fun to show others how easy and fun cloth diapering can be.  What trial and error wipes solutions have you tried?  What is your on-the-go cloth wipes routine?

Amy S. is the breastfeeding, cloth-diapering, home-birth mom of three month old Ezra.

I wasn’t really sure how to react to the fact my wife wanted to use cloth diapers; it seemed like a hair-brained idea. We didn’t know anyone who cloth diapered. She just found a website that sold cloth diapers and decided right then to do it! She did a ton of research, but my first impression of cloth was something my parents would have used involving a big piece of cloth (flat diapers), some diaper pins, and plastic pants.

Then my wife started ordering cloth diapers before we were even pregnant, this didn’t ease my apprehension. However, I must admit now that our daughter is just over a year old, I feel like a cloth diapering veteran – and I would recommend cloth diapers to any dad!

Firstly, they are easy to use. We own two brands – FuzziBunz pocket diapers (snap closures) and Gro Baby One Size diapers (with the hook and loop aka Velcro closures). Both diapers fit my daughter well and have rarely leaked. After a year of using cloth my first-hand experience with diaper rash is minimal since we’ve never had a problem with it.

I haven’t found the extra laundry to be a nuisance at all. Although we do a considerable amount of laundry as it is, we haven’t been bothered by a couple extra loads. There hasn’t been any noticeable increase in our water bill either.
I tend to look at the financial side of things and that was one of the first advantages of cloth diapering to come to mind. All of the money we have invested will count toward any future children we have. No buying disposable diapers for every child, or disposable wipes (an added savings to boot). In fact the cloth wipes we have we received at our baby showers and they have lasted exactly one year!

It is nice to know our second and third child (or as many as we have) are covered – no pun intended. An extra bonus is we could possibly be able to sell the diapers when we are done with them, thus making them even more affordable!

As a side note, I am not a huge environmental guy but I do think people should make some effort to eliminate waste. Cloth diapers make a big difference since we are not throwing away thousands of disposable diapers. Also, you are technically supposed to flush poop when using disposables, but do you know anyone who does? I feel like cloth offers another huge environmental plus there as well! It is nice to know we have done something positive for our environment and the environment we leave to our children and our children’s children!

I have been cloth diapering my son for 8 months now. It took a lot of convincing to get my husband on board, but after several months we finally took the plunge. I wanted so badly to stay home with my boy, and we knew cloth diapers were a great way to save money.

After a lot of research, I bought the Kelly's Closet Exclusive Gro Baby Complete Diapering Kit. I figured I should trust Kelly’s judgment when making my first purchase. The kit included everything I thought I would need.

My fluffy mail arrived and I was super excited to see all of the Gro Baby inserts, shells, boosters, wet bag and diaper pail liner. I couldn't wait to get them on my baby's cute tooshie!

At first sight I thought they looked so huge on him. His little baby 6 month jeans no longer fit him, and he couldn't roll over onto his tummy because (I assumed) they were too bulky. I felt bad for him. Strike one.

I pressed on. I had quit my job and was staying home full time and looked forward to being able to cloth diaper "correctly." I just couldn't figure out why my little boy was constantly wetting himself. Every 2-3 hours or so I would find his tummy all wet. Strike two.

My good friend emailed the makers of Gro Baby and told them about my problem. They told us that the inserts would need to be "prepped" for much longer than I had originally thought. When I first got them in the mail I washed them and dried them four times and thought that would be enough. No, no, no…these babies need up to 10 full wash/dry cycles before they are fully prepped. So I worked on them…and WHOLLA! No more wetness!

After about 3 months of cloth diapering I found out I was expecting again. My son was 8 months old at the time and I just couldn't believe it! The morning sickness brought an interesting perspective to the stinky smell that also accompanied my son's new found diet of solid foods. That's when I really began to actually hate cloth diapering. I didn't own a diaper sprayer so I used an old rubber spatula to literally scoop the poop out of the diapers into the potty. It was disgusting! Strike three.

I cried and gagged every day for two weeks before my husband finally intervened and told me that I HAD to take a break from the cloth. I was so very relieved! However, deep inside I felt like a real failure because I had wanted it to work out so badly. I knew that cloth diapering was the right thing to do, but I just didn't want to deal with the hassle.

About a month later someone from Kelly's Closet asked me if I would help them out with a survey and in exchange I would get a gift certificate toward a purchase at their online store. Of course I said yes. With the gift I purchased a bumGenius diaper sprayer.

The diaper sprayer has been a real home run! I pulled out all of the cloth diapers once again and gave it another go. Would you believe that is just what I needed and I have never looked back. For three months now I have really enjoyed my Gro Baby diapers again thanks to the bumGenius diaper sprayer.

My son is now 13 months old and has learned how to maneuver himself in the diapers. I have also learned to buy him baby jeans that are just a size bigger and the diapers don't look bulky to me anymore. We have gotten into a very awesome cloth diapering routine and I am so very happy.

The diaper sprayer has been a real winner for me and has provided a little comic relief too. When my hubby first used the sprayer he didn’t know which way to point it so when he pushed the button he totally gooshed himself in the face with water which surprised him. He also ended up getting poop everywhere because he was so busy trying to figure out how to use the thing.

At least now I really look forward to using cloth diapers on my second baby boy that is due May 31st!

A few weeks ago we sent out an email requesting suggestions for new Gro Baby packages. We received many wonderful suggestions; in fact we're still going through all of the emails!

We are proud to announce the new Gro Baby Getaway Package:

"I'd offer the GroBaby "Getaway" package, with everything you need to spend a few days away from home with 3 shell sets and a package of bio soakers. If you were using biosoakers on the trip, you wouldn't need the regular soakers, but who would really want a bunch of shells without soakers? Anyhow, that'd be sweet."- Suggested by Slee F.

Congratulations to Slee who will receive 1 Gro Baby One Size Diaper Shell Set.

Thank you to everyone for your participation! If we decide to utilize any further package suggestions (exactly as suggested) we will contact you.

On 9/9/09, my daughter was born. She weighed a whopping 9 pounds and 5 ounces and as her slimy, beautiful little body was placed on my belly, my world changed forever. When a friend came to visit us in the hospital bearing the kind gift of three one size bumGenius One Size 3.0 cloth diapers, my diapering philosophy was also irrevocably changed.

The thing is, I had the intention to cloth diaper while I was expecting – I intended on using prefolds because I didn’t know that there were any other options. Then, I talked to a friend of mine who was using FuzziBunz; they sounded so cool I had to look them up online for myself. WOAH! I couldn’t imagine myself shelling out $15-$20 per diaper—especially since the reason I wanted to cloth diaper in the first place was so I could save money.

I resigned myself to stick with Gerber prefolds and rubber pants I could find at Wal-Mart, Target, and BabiesRUs, although I was less inclined to use them after seeing how much cloth diapering had changed. However, I just couldn’t bring myself to buy them. I registered for some Kushies but unfortunately no one bought them for me and I knew my husband and I would never be able to shell out that amount of cash at one time on our own.

Thankfully my friend walked into our hospital room bearing the gift of three, adorably amazing diapers (along with a special coupon), and I was hooked. Seriously, it was the one of the best baby gifts I received, and that’s after four—no seriously, four baby showers.

My daughter was big baby, as mentioned above, so my bumGenius diapers fit her right away—though the rise was a little high. As soon as her umbilical cord fell off I started using all three of her cloth diapers. I loved them so much I’d wash them twice a day just so I could use them more. Obviously, though, full time cloth diapering wasn’t an option at this time. What I discovered, though, was it wasn’t necessary to shell out the big bucks for these amazing diapers all at once. Sure, $13-18 a diaper seems steep when you look at all the diapers a baby needs at once, but if you take small bites out of that chunk just a little bit at a time, it really isn’t that bad; and that’s what we did.

With each paycheck, we bought 1-3 diapers. At first, I was unaware of all the different types of diapers that were out there. I was only aware of one website that had bumGenius diapers - so I gradually bought all of their great colors. One day, as I was online, I decided to do a Google search for “cloth diapers.”

I was delighted to find the Smartipants One Size diapers for only $14.95 each. I bought a 3-pack, bringing the price down to only $13 each. I wanted to pay it forward, so I kept two of those diapers and set one aside for a friend of mine who was expecting and interested in cloth diapering. I didn’t know what kind of diaper she’d prefer, so I went ahead and bought her a bumGenius and a Happy Heinys One Size diaper as well the next time I made my orders so that she’d have three different diapers to try. Once I touched the Happy Heinys for myself and saw how stinkin’ adorable they are, I had to have some for my daughter, so I bought a couple of them with my next paycheck.

I finally discovered websites like Kelly’s Closet that offered tons of different types of diapers; searching through these sites to find the perfect cloth diaper for my family became an obsession. I now have a stash of 24 one-size pocket diapers (26 once my recent order arrives) including many different brands such as Haute Pockets, Knickernappies, Gro Baby (which I thankfully won from Kelly’s Closet), FuzziBunz, Tweedlebugs, Rocky Mountain and even some Indian prefolds (which I have yet to master). And yes, I have found the perfect diaper to suit my needs. I absolutely adore the FuzziBunz One Size diaper because of its durability and great—no I mean great—fit.

It’s funny. Originally my husband and I never intended to cloth diaper fulltime. We fully intended on using disposables outside of the house. However, with the purchase of a small wet bag, I discovered cloth diapering while outside of the home is surprisingly easy! I’ve even gone so far as to make my own baby wipes—double sided flannel wipes stitched together with a zigzag stitch that work better than any disposable (see The Cloth Diaper Whisperer Tutorial for DIY Wipes). I wet the wipes with wipe solution I make from wipe cubes I bought online. After I made some for myself, I sent a couple of these homemade wipes to two friends who cloth diaper.

To make a long story short, our Diaper Genie is officially retired and gathering dust in the basement, and it’s been weeks since my daughter donned a disposable. To tell you the truth, my husband and I have never wasted a dime on disposable diapers ourselves. The ones we have are still left over from my baby showers! And as for the $6+ I was spending on wipes every week? That money is now saved for better purposes as well. Our daughter is happily diapered in cloth diapers all the time, and we’re so pleased that she has the best material imaginable next to her sensitive skin. I’m sold on cloth diapers 100% and I will never go back!

My aforementioned friend had her baby and is also cloth diapering with a preference of Indian unbleached prefolds and some Thirsties Diaper Covers. Cloth diapers are truly the gift that keeps on giving. I’m certainly glad someone thought to give some to me!

Our team of designers set out to create a truly unique and innovative diapering system with GroBaby. Months of prototyping, researching materials, and testing resulted in the most modern, creative, and smartly designed cloth/hybrid diapering system on the market today…GroBaby!

We often hear similar questions from prospective GroBaby customers and wanted to fully answer them for you! What was thinking behind the design and ultimately the success of this fantastic product line? Read on:

Why do GroBaby Shells have a mesh lining instead of the exposed (shiny side) PUL/TPU so I can wipe them out?
One of our top priorities when designing GroBaby Shells was to be certain it was the ultimate in comfort for baby. We chose silky soft TPU for the outside and a soft-brushed mesh for the inside. The mesh allows for proper airflow around baby’s skin unlike a standard diaper cover. We felt the “plastic side” of TPU/PUL should never be in direct contact with baby. Only the softest materials should go against baby’s skin, not sticky urethane.

GroBaby Shells should be used in the same fashion you’d use your favorite diaper cover. If the inside feels damp let your Shell air dry and use it at the next change. If the mesh smells or feels wet simply rinse, let air dry and use it at the next change. GroBaby Shells will dry in less than 2 hours at room temp. If your Shell is soiled toss it in the pail and get a new one.

Resoundingly, families using GroBaby full time require 10-12 Shells in their stash and will go through 2-4 Shells per day.

What is so “green” about BioSoakers?
GroBaby BioSoakers are truly unique. There is NO other absorbent pad for a hybrid diapering system like BioSoakers.

The inner layer of BioSoakers is made from Ingeo, a corn base biopolymer. That is derived from 100% annually renewable resources. This material is tested and is compostable to EN13432 (EU) standard and ASTM D 6400 (USA).

The core is made from wood pulp that contains just 3 grams of FDA approved corn derived SAP gel.

The outer waterproof layer is made from a 100$% natural bio-film that has been tested by both the BPI and DIN CERTCO and is compostable to EN 13432 (EU)

Our BioSoakers are the greenest in disposable/hybrid options and we’re proud to offer a great solution to parents when cloth just isn’t an option!

What is the cost Comparison between GroBaby and other Hybrid Systems?
A popular Hybrid System recommends: 6 Covers (in each size) and 6000 refills over the course of diapering each baby.
- 6 Covers in each size= $407.76
- 6000 Refills (ave cost is $.45)= $3107.76
GRAND TOTAL USING THIS SYSTEM: $3107.76

USING THEIR CLOTH REFILLS
-6 Covers in each size= $407.76-24
Size Small Cloth Refills= $119.96-24
Size M/L Cloth Refills= $119.96
GRAND TOTAL USING THIS SYSTEM: $647.68

Using the GroBaby Hybrid System and assuming the same number of changes.
-9 One Size GroBaby Shells = $152.25
-6000 BioSoakers (ave cost is $.39)= $2398.90
GRAND TOTAL USING GROBABY HYBRID SYSTEM: $2551.45

USING GROBABY CLOTH SYSTEM
-12 One Size GroBaby Shells + 24 Organic One Size Soaker Pads and 16 Organic Boosters.
GRAND TOTAL USING GROBABY CLOTH SYSTEM: $375.00

You may find that your needs vary slightly from the above counts, but overall GroBaby Cloth is the most economical way to diaper a baby!!

Cloth is the most environmentally friendly way to diaper, but BioSoakers are a fantastic option when cloth just isn’t possible!

I was so excited to start showing her off in the cute clothes, the darling accessories, and of course, the cute little diaper bag I received at my baby shower. Much to my disappointment, those cute little bags failed to hold what I thought were much needed essentials. Four years, two more kids, and a frugal switch to cloth diapers later, presented me opportunities to learn to how to keep my cargo light, yet efficient.

Cloth diapers are naturally bulky, taking up precious space. Therefore I highly recommend the Gro-Baby diaper system. With one diaper on my child, all I need is one additional shell and two soakers. Toss in a wet bag, a few cloth wipes, and bumGenius diaper spray (in a 2.5 oz spray bottle I found at a local drug store), and I have everything I need!

When my son is only wet, I just spray and wipe with toilet paper from the bathroom (Saves the wipes for messes!). Just in case, I keep a bottle of hand sanitizer on hand for those incontinent diaper changes. My Maya wrap replaces the need for a nursing cover and a blanket - and since it's conveniently located in my car it's always readily available which also allows for the much needed space in my bag. When I was nursing, all I really needed was some nursing cream- stored in a lip gloss container.. Now that I've switched to bottles, I pack one bottle with enough warm water for one feeding. Although there are formula containers on the market, I’ve found using a recycled M&M minis container can hold 4 oz of formula comfortably. I also have a travel toothbrush with dish soap on the tip in the event I need to wash the bottle.

Other accessories I ditched were my daily planner, camera (replaced by my phone), extra clothes (I leave those in the car), and toys. Instead of toys, I've found the best way to keep a child happy is to engage them in the activity at hand. Playing games like I Spy or Peek-a-Boo help greatly! I do bring a snack cup filled with a healthy snack which hangs on one of the key rings outside my bag. I also found a small container (for pacifiers), which I drilled holes into and hang from a key clip as well. Now with a diaper bag full of essentials, all I need is my wallet, and I’m ready to go!
