We have a solid laundry routine for our cloth diapers. We use Eco Sprout for all our laundry in combination with Calgon to help combat our very hard water. We’ve used cloth diapers for almost three years now with few troubles overall. When we get a stain we use Buncha Stain Remover and some sun. Our night diapers sometimes battle ammonia, so we will use Funk Rock or RLR about once every 3 months when that issue starts to come up. Our day diapers do not have this trouble. We have, overall, clean diapers. Then a friend mentioned her positive, routine-altering experience with GroVia Mighty Bubble, and I was intrigued.

Mighty Bubbles can be purchased in a ten or twenty count package at a cost of $.70-.80 per use. It is a deep cleaning product used to remove buildup of urine and minerals from cloth diapers and garments. I love that it’s made in the United State by a small business, actually lists its ingredients, does not use harmful chemicals, and does not test on animals.

Using the product is quite simple. You place one pack in the washer with the diapers and no other detergent. You run one hot wash with an extra rinse. That’s it! So simple! You can also use it to maintain a clean and build-up free routine by washing with Mighty Bubbles once every 6-8 weeks. In the case of severe buildup you may need several washes.

So in one corner we have my clean diapers; in the other, GroVia Mighty Bubbles. During one particularly lazy summer week I washed our diapers regularly but did not fold them. As the pile grew, I thought it the perfect time for my mighty challenge. I’m more of a go big or go home kind of gal, so I used our bathtub to give the inserts plenty of space for a good, long soak.

I combined two packs with very hot water and cloth diaper inserts and fitteds in the tub. One pack per load is adequate, but we have enough diapers for two loads of laundry. I allowed these to sit for two hours, two times agitating them for about a minute by hand. And what to my wondering eyes should appear but dingy water! Not clean and clear!

Mighty Bubbles did not remove stains (nor does it claim to). It did leave our diapers brighter, fresher, and possibly even more absorbent. I obviously can’t back absorbency up scientifically, but I did notice my heavy wetting toddler’s night diaper to be more evenly drenched with less smell and moisture left on his wool over the next few mornings since this fun experiment. The night diapers in general have lost the slight ammonia smell that has built up recently.

I was so excited by my cleaner clean laundry that I pulled out our towels and let them soak in another pack of Mighty Bubbles. They also now smell more fresh and less hard-water dingy than ever before.
Overall, for the price point of less than a dollar, Mighty Bubbles turned out to be a cost-conscious and effective product specifically formulated by a cloth diaper company for cloth diaper (and other) purposes! If you are battling the stinkies I’d easily recommend Mighty Bubbles to a worthy opponent!

Bio: Lynette shares her life with her husband and two sons, ages 1 and 2 years. She has cloth diapered both since birth and enjoys all things eco-friendly.

This blog post originally posted on September 11, 2010. With the recent after-math of Hurricane Sandy we thought we would re-post for you:

The renewal of hurricane season and active storms has made me re-evaluate my emergency plans and preparations. I have given thought to water supply, food, batteries, important documents, and more...but with my decision to use cloth diapers exclusively, and the disappearance of the very last disposable diaper, I have new plans to make. Part of my preparation will no longer include picking up an extra pack of disposable diapers. It is important to me to find an environmentally safe emergency plan.

How will I wash my stash if we were to lose power and water? What happens when I run out of clean cloth diapers? Do I really plan on washing everything by hand with a limited water supply? Many questions began spinning through my head, and I realized I hadn't planned for conditions without a washing machine.

In formulating my plan, I slowed down and asked myself the following questions:
  • How many diapers does my child use in a day?
  • How often will I wash diapers? (As a load, or individually?)
  • Do I have enough diapers to rotate clean/dirty diapers in time for them to be dry and ready?
  • Where will I wash the diapers? (In a bucket? The sink?)
  • Do I have extra needed accessories (diaper rash cream, laundry detergent, wipes, liners)?
  • Where will the waste water be disposed?
  • How will the process maintain sanitary conditions? (Hand-washing/disinfecting?)
  • How long will I be prepared to be without power/water?
My stash of cloth diapers includes mostly One Size FuzziBunz and bumGenius, with a few Rumparooz, and Thirsties. I also have 3 Bummis Whisper Wrap Covers which I use with a Kissaluvs Hybrid One Size Contour (I really need to get more inserts!). I have enough diapers to last 3 or 4 days, but from experience realize that it is necessary to plan for a week or more in an emergency situation. My planning decision revolved mainly around the question of hand-washing diapers that I already have (counting on enough extra water to the supply to enable this), and/or finding an alternative solution. Standard disposables for me will be an absolute last resort, and I won't stock them.

Kelly's Closet offered me a very appealing solution: GroVia Bio-Soakers! With this option, I can reuse a cover multiple times and replace the insert as needed...without a significant water resource impact (I'll only need to clean covers). I will always have my other cloth diapers and inserts, as additional options available in my emergency kit. Even if I ran out of Bio-Soakers (my first choice for avoiding a heavier wash load), I will still have a wonderful supply of fluff to wash and reuse. GroVia also makes Bio-Diapers, an alternative to disposable diapers that may be another option.

Cloth diapers are actually a perfect solution for emergency situations. Long before washing machines, cloth was THE only option, and mothers (and fathers) made it work. Granted, emergencies can be slightly different without a known unlimited source of water, but the same principles apply. Reliance on modern convenience is not necessary to making cloth diapers effective. The biggest added bonus is not having the worry of a panicked sell-out of all disposables at the grocery store...my cloth will always be right there.

I'll be ordering some GroVia shells and Bio-Soakers to test drive this solution. In the meantime, I may come up with other ideas, but at least I'm on the right track for being prepared in an emergency with cloth diapers. Are you?

Conventional wisdom says you start a family by getting pregnant. You then have nine months to get your life in order…nine months to research cloth diapering, baby furniture, daycare, and pediatricians. You going into newborn-hood knowing you've made good decisions for your baby and family.

My husband and I are anything but conventional. After six years of trying to conceive, we decided that our path to parenting would be though domestic adoption. Five weeks after we were homestudy approved, we got The Call. We then had six weeks to get our lives, home, and work ready for a baby. While cloth diapering had always interested me, I did not have any time to even think though all the possibilities or do any research. I also knew that we'd be living in another state with our newborn for an undetermined amount of time, so disposable diapering was the only option we felt would work for us.

We brought out baby home to Minnesota two weeks after his birth in January. True to Minnesota-style, his arrival home was marked with a blizzard. We spent the next four months with our little guy in disposable diapers, thinking it was too late to start cloth diapering.

But the waste was getting to me. The fact that my kid was sitting in chemicals was getting me. When a Twitter friend started cloth diapering her baby who was older than mine, I decided that it was time for us to make a change to cloth! The only problem was that we had gotten used to the convenience of disposable. After hanging out on various cloth diaper forums, I learned about Hybrid systems, like GroVia and Flip. What a great option…how come no one told me about this sooner! I immediately got us started, and it has been a huge success. I use the disposable inserts when we are out and about, and use the cloth inserts at home. I also found a combination of cover, insert, and booster insert that FINALLY stopped overnight leaks! Kiddo had been leaking his disposables like crazy, and it took cloth to put a stop to that.

The only hitch to our giddy up is that our daycare center does not allow cloth diapering. However, they are looking into whether the hybrid systems with disposable inserts would be allowable by the licensing board. We are eagerly awaiting their reply (cross your fingers for us!).

Diapering with hybrid systems has been such a success, that I'm branching out to cloth all-in-two systems with Best Bottoms and Soft Bums. Heck, I may end up with a little of everything, since cloth diapering is so addictive! And I was worried about the laundry piling up…it's not a problem! I LIKE washing our cloth diapers (shhh, don't tell my husband that)! Every time I put a cloth diaper on my babe, I know I'm saving money, the environment, and his butt.

With another two years of diapering ahead of me, I am glad I made the decision that it's never too late to start cloth diapering.

We always talk about how trim diapers are under clothes, but I'm more interested in how trim my diaper bag can get!

With a 2 year old and a 2 month old in diapers, having enough cloth in one bag for a day's outing was bulky and not working out very well.  I could have purchased a bigger diaper bag, but I am addicted to my Skip Hop Duo!  (And I reeeally didn't want to carry around a bigger bag!).

Enter the GroVia diapers!

When I pre-snap 2 shells with soakers in the center of the bag, there is still room for 2 soakers in each interior pocket.  That means no fumbling around for an insert when I need it.  When I pack it this way, there is a total of 6 diaper changes in my bag!  That is enough changes to get us through a full day of activity!

The amazing benefits of having these diapers especially for my diaper bag are that I don't have to worry about packing the right size for both kids.  (This makes my husband really happy...I can't seem to remember very much!).  Plus, I love to advocate cloth diapers, and GroVia is such a user-friendly option for showcasing the ease of cloth diapering.

There is also enough room in the bag for other necessities:

- Wet Bag (I love my Fuzzi Bunz).
- Wipes in front pocket for easy grabbing.
- Planet wise snack bags with trail mix or crackers.
- Muslin receiving blanket (perfect for a nursing cover).
- Sippy cup.
- 2 changes of clothes for baby.
- A handful of small toys/books.
- My wallet!  (If I can find it somewhere around here!).

Of course, sometimes I throw in one of my other diapers to coordinate with their outfits, but for a full day out, this is what works best for us.  I'm happy that I have a super-trim diaper bag ready with cute fluff!

My Super-Trim Diaper Bag!

I spent a year--yes, a year—waking up in the middle of the night, having to completely change my daughter’s diaper. My little heavy wetter leaked through her diaper and on to her pajamas and sheets on a daily basis. You’d think I would have given up at that point, but I am stubborn and wanted to conquer this issue. I had blamed my stay dry diapers for repelling, I blamed gussets for leaking, but all I really needed to do was a little bit of research on the kinds diapers that held up at night.

Hopefully I have done a little bit of this work for you. At Padded Tush Stats, people fill out surveys on how different diapers worked for them. One of the questions they are asked is whether or not the diaper works for them. So here are the results on how some diapers have worked at night:

Ragababe AIO - 83%
Softbums Omni - 63%
Rumparooz One Size Diaper – 63%
Green Mountain Diapers Prefolds (Cloth Eez) – 50%
Green Line Diapers - 48%
Bumgenius Flip – 48%
Fuzzibunz One Size – 46%
Econobum - 44%
Bumgenius 4.0 – 44%
Bumgenius Elemental - 32%
GroVia AIO - 28%
GroVia AI2 – 18%
Bottom Bumpers Side Snapping AIO– 14%

One of the things I found when looking through survey responses is that although a pocket diaper may not hold up at night with the original insert, many have added an additional insert or a different insert altogether. For example, one very popular insert people recommended was the Joey Bunz Hemp Insert.

I highly recommend having some night time diapers set aside specifically for night time use. For example, I love my Bottom Bumpers Side Snapping AIO and my GroVia AIO for daytime use because of their trimness. However, at night I like to use my Bumgenius 4.0 in velcro (velcro means Zombi Mom gets a diaper on faster and without accidentally snapping a chunky leg or something).

However, for naptime I like to use snaps because my girl likes to play a while before going to sleep and she takes off her diaper if it is velcro (see picture above).

Can I just say that the WEEK I figured this all out and found the perfect nighttime solution, I brought home a newborn. Isn’t that how life works? So I am no longer waking up throughout the night for one baby, but I am for another. Ah the life of a Mom! But in case you are wondering, here are the diapers that I use for my two kids at night for minimal leaks:

Baby #1: (24-pound, 20 month old heavy wetter , female)– Ragababe size large with a large insert laid overtop, Sustainablebabyish Magic Fitted Diaper with a fleece cover, or a Bumgenius 4.0 or Fuzzibunz One Size stuffed with a Knickernappies Super Do Insert.
Baby #2: (10-pound, 11 week old skinny legged heavy wetter, male) – Kissaluvs size Zero or Little Boppers Newborn fitted with a Thirsties XS cover.

I hope this helps give you some leak-free nights. Have you tried out a diaper that either worked really well or perhaps not-so-well at night? Please head on over to Padded Tush Stats and fill out a survey. This website runs on the fact that people take a few minutes to fill out a brief survey on how a diaper filled out for them, so thank you in advance!

Tara

BIO:
My name is Tara and I am the owner of Padded Tush Stats. I am a happy mom of a wonderful 17-month old baby and am about to be a mother of a newborn! I stay home with my girl as much as possible, but I am also a full time graduate student in education. I have cloth diapered my daughter for over a year now and love it. I started only because I am just so frugal, but now I am excited about how I am helping the environment.

I experienced a lot of difficulties finding the "right" diaper for my daughter (she is 17 months and I feel like I JUST figured it out). She is a heavy wetter, so I went through a lot of brands before I found what worked for me. But I spent quite a bit of money on highly recommended brands, only to find that they didn't work for her. That's when I wondered if there was a way to categorize reviews based on the unique needs of babies. My dissertation is a survey study on writing programs--so when I had this question about cloth diapering reviews, my mind immediately went to surveys! The surveys in here are in no way a reflection of fancy statistics and survey work, so please don't judge me on that. These are just simple surveys to hopefully help out a few cloth diapering parents/guardians.

Leak Free Nights

Husband and I were elated when we learned that Baby J was going to be a big brother. We were also a bit overwhelmed by the prospect of parenting two children under two. I started looking for ways to save money. Cloth diapers topped the list. It also didn’t hurt that cloth would lessen our carbon footprint, be gentler on our little ones’ bottoms, and the diapers are just so darn cute.

Husband wasn’t convinced at first but he agreed after trying some all-in-2s and pockets and seeing how easy they are to use. Our family favorites are Gro Via, bumGenius, FuzziBunz and Happy Heinys. Husband is fully on board now and he even does diaper laundry.

I am thrilled that using cloth has saved our family (a lot of!) money but my motivations have changed over time. After Bean’s birth, it quickly became clear that he was different than “typical” children. He had a number of health problems and global developmental delays. After many months, countless therapy sessions and even more doctor appointments, we pursued genetics testing and learned that Bean has Williams Syndrome. Williams Syndrome is a rare genetic condition characterized by heart defects, kidney abnormalities, developmental delays, intellectual disabilities and distinctive facial features. Individuals with Williams Syndrome are unique because they also possess striking verbal abilities, an affinity and talent for music and have very outgoing and endearing personalities.

Having a child with special needs has changed my perspective on a lot of things. There’s so much uncertainty and so many things I can’t control. But there are some things that I can do to impact Bean’s life in a positive way. I consider cloth to be one of those things. It feels good to know that I am using a gentle and safe product against his skin. He is not sitting in chemical-laden diapers day in and day out. He has had a lot of pain in his life but diaper rash has never been a factor.

Cloth has also had a positive impact on his brother’s life. Baby J was in cloth diapers until we started potty learning. When he first learned about pull ups from his peers, he insisted on wearing them. We really only used them outside of the house and at bedtime. I found them to be essentially useless in helping him to learn about potty time. He would wet the pull up and continue about his day. So, we made the switch to regular cotton underpants at home and cloth trainers when we are out and about. Our favorite, by far, are Blueberry trainers. They are very trim and feel like underpants. They protect his clothes but he can feel when he has an accident. As a result, he has made a lot of progress.

This is also encouraging because we expect that Bean will be delayed in learning to use the potty. We hope that cloth will help him meet this milestone and gain more independence sooner than expected for children with Williams Syndrome.

Cloth has grown with our family as we have grown and changed. I am confident that by using cloth, I am doing the right thing for my children and our family and meeting our evolving needs by using cloth.

Biography: Heather is the proud mama to two charming boys and wife to an amazing husband. She can be found blogging about Baby J, a wonderful and spirited three year old, and Bean, her sweet 20 month old living with Williams Syndrome at www.babyjandbean.blogspot.com.

Cloth Diapers Over Time for Changing and Special Needs

My name is Kathy and I am 29 years old from Akron, Ohio.  I became a mom on May 18, 2010 when I gave birth to a healthy little 5lb 7oz baby boy named Noah.  I began cloth diapering when he was 3 months old and I have been completely addicted ever since.
I originally started cloth diapering because a friend of mine cloth diapers her little girl and I loved the idea of saving the environment, money, and my little ones bum from chemicals:)  I quickly became addicted to all of the different styles and accessories that go along with cloth diapering.  My main diaper is a Fuzzibunz perfect size but I've fed my addiction and expanded my collection to include Grovia, Kissaluvs fitted, Thirsties duo diapers, fab fitted, and duo wraps, hemp prefolds, and stay dry duo inserts.  I LOVE my fuzzibunz hanging dry bag because it unzips at the bottom so it does not fill with water during washing.  I also love my Budda Bunz wool dryer balls because they really speed up the drying time in the winter when I dry in the dryer.

In the summer time I love to hang dry my diapers and I get so excited to just smell everyone as I take them down because they smell sooooooooo good:)  I never thought I would use cloth wipes but I LOVE using those too and it's so much easier than I thought it would be.  My favorite are grovia.  I also make my own cloth wipes solution.  I use Honey Bun Drops Cloth Diaper Wipes Solution and I just love the oatmeal and shea butter scent.  Yummy!  My baby's bottom is so soft and free of any diaper rash!!!!  I never felt the need for a diaper sprayer.  I use grovia flushable liners instead when I know we are going to have a dirty diaper and I just take out the liner and flush it!  It's fabulous!  I am always looking at new goodies and new diapers to try to add to my collection DAILY and I just flip when my fluff arrives in the mail:)  I don't know why everyone doesn't use cloth diapers.  I love cloth diapering!!!!

Hi, my name is Julie. I'm a cloth diaper addict.

The first step is admitting you have a problem.  The second step (in this case) is stalking DiaperShops.com for the latest coupon codes!

Why am I so addicted to cloth diapers?  They are soft, they are colorful, they are cute, they don't irritate my super sensitive little one's bottoms and they are reusable!  I truly love my FuzziBunz perfect size diapers because of their literally perfect fit, and beautiful bright colors.  My husband is a huge fan of the BumGenius aplix, because even with a wiggly baby, it's easy to diaper up and go.  Furthermore, I can't resist pretty new colors and prints of Rumparooz, Happy Heinys, and GroVia...there simply could not be enough of any of these diapers, and there is always another one to try!

Seriously, we just don't have the finances to buy all the cute cloth diapers I want to get!  We're a military family on a tight budget.  We know the end result of cloth diapers is savings, but purchasing a stash all at one go was never an option.  But, continuing to pay for diapers I'm just going to throw away?  Even less of an option!

I bought one diaper at a time, and wondered how to maximize baby's time in cloth.  I was elated when my friend told me about DiaperShops.com.  I know, this is sounding like the cheesiest of infomercials, but it really has turned our whole approach to building a diaper stash completely around.  Not only can you earn points every time you make a purchase (to earn more free fluff!), but there are coupons...for FREE diapers!

It may not sound like it could amount to that much.  Even I underestimated the savings!  As I wrote this post, I went back to my order status to count up how many free diapers I've received...and I had to stop counting at a dozen!  That is the first 12 reasons I love DiaperShops.com!  It amounts to over $200 of free diapers!

We're expecting our third child in March, and I actually have accumulated such a stash, I'm putting some of it aside to use for the first time on our little boy...even though I could use it now.  The picture shows just a few of the diapers I have earned through points and coupon codes.  I've received Econobum, KaWaii, Rumparooz, Katydids, and FuzziBunz (among others)...and even the cutest Bummis Swimmi diaper!
My favorite part of the order is of course opening the box, but with a little twist.  My husband actually peeks over and I get to show him which diaper I got for free.  The approving smile is priceless.

I could list many reasons for my love of our favorite retailer, and fluff in general, but I think those first 12 reasons are pretty good!  (Who can argue with free cloth diapers?!)  It's time to call it a night.  After all, I need sleep so I can dream about the fluff that's on it's way in the mail right now!

12 Reasons to Love DiaperShops.com

I love putting together new baby gifts for friends and family members! Whether your friends plan to cloth diaper, they already cloth diaper, or you are trying to convert them to cloth diapering, putting together a fluffy baby shower gift is always appreciated. For baby #4, my favorite welcome gifts came from my cloth diaper expert moms: new diapers in fun prints, accessories I never knew existed, or a gift card to put to use however I needed once the baby arrived! No matter what your budget, no matter the mom, there is always an appropriate fluffy gift ready to be given (and well received)!

Gift Idea #1: Cloth Diaper Newborn Package … Help a new baby get a great start in cloth! I loved prefolds, snappis, and covers as my newborn cloth diaper of choice (Bummis has a newborn pack but you can put your own together as well), but I recently gave a mom friend a small stash of Kissaluvs fitted size 0s and a couple of cute covers from ThirstiesRumparooz also has the cutest newborn diaper 2-pack – pocket diapers, super cute and intended for preemie to twelve pounds – great colors, great designs! You could also choose one or two diapers that the new baby can “grow into.” Do you have a favorite diaper for your little one? Share the love and introduce her to something that will come in handy down the road!

Gift Idea #2: Cloth Diaper Accessory Must-Haves … Buy one or buy an assortment. As a mom new to cloth diapering, I appreciated getting cloth diaper accessories that I didn’t know I needed until I saw them. One of my favorite cloth diaper accessories were diaper liners – I received stay-dry diaper liners made by Bumgenius as well as flushable diaper liners and fleece liners from Bummis.  Diaper doublers were also a welcome gift – they came attached with a little note that they would probably come in handy at night. (And oh, how handy they have been!)  Cloth wipes (some were even handmade!) and Kissaluvs Diaper Lotion Potion are another great combination. Large pail liners (you must have two) and small wet bags (3 will do) are practical gifts but they can also be fun if you choose fun colors and prints.

Gift Idea #3: Fluffy Gifts For Non-CD Moms … Just because your friend doesn’t plan to cloth diaper, that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge her in some fun, eco-friendly baby gifts. Mustela Physiobebe No-Rinse Wash is an amazing product to give your baby a little waterless bath. The laundry that you love for cloth diapers is also great for all of baby’s clothes and blankets – why not get the new mom some Charlie’s Laundry Soap or GroVia Tiny Bubbles phosphate free laundry detergent. Diaper rash creams such as CJ’s Butter or GroVia Magic Stick, are cloth diaper friendly but can be used by anyone.  Organic cotton burp cloths, sleep sacks, or gorgeous bamboo muslin swaddle wraps from Aden & Anais are great gifts for all moms and their babies! Who knows, maybe your thoughtful gifts might inspire your friend to test out some cute cloth!

Gift Idea #4: The Fabulous Gift Card. Who doesn’t love getting a gift card?! The ability to pick and choose her own favorite diapers and accessories for a new bundle of joy is always a welcome gift!

I am hoping that buying baby gifts for others will help curb my appetite for new fluff for my own little one! Happy Baby Gift Shopping!

Putting Together The Perfect (Fluffy) Baby Shower Gift

It would be impossible for someone to come to my house and not know I cloth diaper. There are always diapers everywhere! I consider my drying style to be "hybrid"—I'll throw my pre-folds, fitteds, and inserts in the dryer while I hang covers, then 10-15 minutes later I grab all the diapers to hang. This takes the stiffness out of total hang drying, but allows me to cut back on electric bills…which anyone who cloth diapers and/or has endless laundry from kids can appreciate!

Lucky for me, I live in Colorado where we have about 300 days of sun a year. So when the weather permits my drying rack moves to the back yard, stains get sunned out, it's a win-win. But with winter here I've had to improvise and turn my house into one big drying rack. Aside from random hooks on walls and doors which are all fully utilized on diaper laundry day, I use the shower curtain rod, and the wrought-iron bed frame in our guest bedroom. I find that GroVia inserts in particular dry better on a hook than over a line.

When I was short on space a few weeks ago during an especially big load of diaper laundry, I (embarrassingly) took some dental floss and push pull pins to create a line in my laundry room that I use for light stuff like wipes and liners (so that the line doesn't break). And is it weird that I "window shop" for drying racks to upgrade to? Oh, and don't be surprised if you go to dry your hands in the bathroom and there's a fitted diaper on the towel rod.

What do you use – or where – to hang dry your diapers?
