The first time I tried cloth diapers, I used a Gerber pre-fold with a snapi under a size one Thirsties cover. It worked perfectly. There were no leaks and changing was no big deal. What I was not prepared for was the wet prefold. I know it sounds silly, but at the time I was at the changing table with a wet prefold and nowhere to put it. Like many of us, I am a “googler”. Yet for some reason I did not turn to it to answer this question. Was it baby brain? All I knew was that my mother used disposables. My mother in law used a diaper service and I remembered her stories of hauling a wet pail downstairs. I did not like the idea of having to produce a wet pail that instant. I thought: “What is a wet pail? A bucket of water and soap?” In any case, I changed my baby into a disposable diaper and I wrapped the wet prefold in a used grocery bag and threw it out. Yes, people. Guilty as charged. In my defense, I washed the Thirsties cover.

Fast-forward one year and I am pregnant with baby number two. Due to many breastfeeding problems and hormonal issues, I know baby number two will be formula fed. Baby number one is a toddler under two years old and not potty trained. I will have two babies in diapers and one that needs formula! The idea of spending that kind of money every month was just terrifying. I started researching cloth diapering in earnest. Paying most attention to what to do with the poop and the wet diapers. Thankfully, the wet pail is mostly a thing of the past (phew!) and a dry pail is just fine. I bought a Planet Wise liner and a “tall” plastic trash can with a lid. Now I would not throw out a wet prefold! The poop is not a problem, since a toddler’s poop rolls out of the diaper into the toilet. No need to rinse most of the time. I am sure this will change with a newborn, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

A local store stocks cloth diapers. After much pondering, I bought two Flips with stay dry inserts and three Econobums with hemp inserts. I went home and prepped the diapers. By the time I was done, it was nighttime. We were having a lot of trouble with my son’s disposables leaking overnight. In fact, we were using disposables a size larger and yet sometimes he would soak through the diaper! I read everywhere that hemp absorbs very well so we tried it. Why not? I was dealing with leaky diapers at least once a week. Another one would not be a big deal. That first night, my son used a Flip cover with a stay dry insert over an Econobum hemp prefold. The next morning I had a happy toddler that had not leaked! And to my surprise he was dry. I could not believe that the stay dry insert actually stayed dry! Call me skeptical, but I just could not believe that cloth could do that. The inserts went into the dry pail (not the trash). I wiped the Flip cover and put on another hemp prefold. I was back in the store that day and bought more Flip stay dry inserts. I have even added cloth wipes!

I quickly supplemented my growing stash with new bumGenius pocket diapers and bought some used Happy Heinys. This way I don’t have to wash every day. The dry pail does not smell like I thought it would. Pregnant ladies out there, you know how the nose changes! I cannot smell a thing with the lid closed. My husband does most of our nighttime routine therefore, we use the bumGenius pocket with two inserts overnight. I have no leaks to report. Gladly, by now I know I could also use a Flip or an Econobum with two stay dry inserts get no leaks either.

I find cloth-diapering fun and I wish my son was younger and that the weather was warmer so that he could run around in his cute diaper. Soon a new addition will come home and I will be able to do just that! That reminds me I need to get her some coordinating baby legs!

I Once Threw Out A Wet Prefold

When my husband and I found out we were pregnant with our first my husband immediately jumped on the cloth diaper wagon for environmental reasons. I, on the other hand was so opposed it began our first "parenting war". My one and only experience with cloth diapers was when I lived overseas and worked in a baby hospital. The babies were clothed in muslin material from armpit to tip toe and the smell was enough to knock you on your backside. From that experience on I was determined to diaper the twenty first century way – disposables only (or so I thought).

Nine months after our second child made his great appearance I began questioning my strong beliefs. I sat down and being the Excel spreadsheet woman that I am I calculated the cost that we spent on our first son to get him from newborn to toilet trained and our second son from newborn to the nine month mark and I was shocked! For three plus years of diapers, wipes, and diaper genie refills I was pushing the $3,500 mark (that would be an awesome family vacation had I spent it for that).

I began researching and discovered many benefits to cloth diapering. I discovered that cloth diapering is much more than the first known of muslin material; there were even cute covers to make diapering a fashion statement not just a functional tool. To top it off the cost of cloth diapering from newborn to toilet trained was dramatically less! I presented all my findings to my husband and he gave me the stamp of approval to begin the purchasing of cloth diapers for our second son. Little did we know at that point that the diapers that I was purchasing for number two would soon be able to be passed down to number three!

For economical reasons my diapering stash began small. I had the mindset that I would begin cloth diapering my number two baby and see if I would handle it and then if it was "a go" then I would add to my stash to fit not only number two but number three as well!

My beginner stash consisted of:
  • One Planet Wise Large Wet Bag
  • One Planet Wise Diaper Pail Liner
  • Planet Wise Wipe Pouch with 15 wipes
  • Chinese Premium Unbleached Prefolds (Six per pack)
  • Purchased twelve prefolds
  • Tweedle Bugs Diaper Covers (Can purchase seconds which are "cosmetically blemished" for half price off their website)
  • Purchased four covers
  • Rubbermaid trashcan for a wet pail
  • BacOut cleaning solution (For eliminating the smellies between washes in the pail)
  • Dr. Bonner's Pure Castile Soap (Used with distilled water for my wipe solution)
  • Two spray bottles (one bottle for BacOut and one bottle for wipe solution)
  • Country Save laundry detergent (Approximately $200 was spent to get me started, if I used my supply for four months I broke even when comparing cloth to disposables.)
Thus began my cloth-diapering obsession!

Continuing is my advice for my friends Marissa and Jeremy who are expecting their first baby any day now… They have asked me what my advice, tips and tricks are for first-timers thinking about cloth diapering.

I think the two looming questions that parents diving into cloth diapering have are:
1) What do you do with the poop?
2) How do you wash these things?

As simple as people tried to make it sound for me it still seemed overwhelming and difficult. Looking back I’m so surprised at how quickly it all became routine. You will be too. Hopefully my experience and trial and error will save you some time and get you started on an easy day-to-day routine.

A diaper change results in two options. Option number one, wet diapers, go in the diaper pail/basket/bag. Simple. Done. Option number two, poop diapers. I love when people or websites say “Just shake it off and flush.” I remember looking at my 4 month old’s breastfed poops wondering what I was supposed to “shake.” Before solid foods the poops…aren’t so solid. My best advice for these is a diaper sprayer, a handy little device that attaches to the water feed of your toilet. I’m writing this post for Jeremy, whom I have witnessed firsthand being a little stymied in the handyman department (before you balk, Jeremy, recall the deck painting, cabinet doors, etc).

Even Jeremy can install a diaper sprayer and, let me tell you, it is a lifesaver. Down the road you will be able to shake the solid poops right into the toilet with little to no residue left on the diapers, I promise. However, in the early months, you will use the sprayer. I always removed the insert (you can either just toss it in your basket or rinse and toss) and just spray the pocket diaper itself. With pockets nothing ever stuck or stained. Then just toss it in your basket for laundry day. Not so bad, right?

Laundry Day. Forget the fear. Ignore the complicated additives. Start with a basic routine. Cold water rinse and spin. Hot water wash with Rockin’ Green. One more rinse and spin. Done. Down the road you might run into some stains or build-up or some smells from time to time. At that point you can troubleshoot or do some research (this blog has it all!) to figure out what might be your best solution, but honestly, with Rockin Green (no, I do not own stock in the company!) you will probably have some smooth sailing.

I have simplified things quite a bit, but cloth diapering really doesn’t have to be complicated. I have laid out my best advice based on my experience as a recent “Newbie.” I believe the simpler you keep it the more likely people are willing to try it and stick with it. The beauty of cloth diapering is that there are so many options, styles and brands to suit every family’s needs. One person will swear by a method or style that just doesn’t work for someone else. Once you get into the swing of things you will figure out what you love and what you could do without and make your decisions accordingly. I can almost guarantee that you will find a system that works for you and you will truly love cloth diapering.

Fluff Friday 67

Earlier this year our family traveled down to Orlando , FL for a week to attend a wedding. The thought of spending money on disposable diapers that I could instead spend on new fluff, just killed me…so I made the decision to cloth diaper on vacation. This decision was made easier due to the fact that we were staying at my sister’s house, thus giving me access to her washing machine. To keep travel costs down, (don’t you just hate those new per bag charges!) I somehow managed to pack not only myself and two kids in one suitcase, but also a days worth of diapers. This was in addition to the days worth that I packed in my diaperbag. I considered taking prefolds and/or flats and covers due to their small size, but ended up turning to my faithful BumGenius 3.0 pocket diapers.

I was pleasantly surprised when my sister didn’t mind when I asked her if I could use her washing machine every other night to wash diapers. She knew that I had made the switch to cloth diapers, and was more than happy to let me use her washing machine. I had asked her about it before we left on vacation, as I wouldn’t think of throwing my fluff in someone else’s machine without asking first. Cloth diapering while away from home did take some planning, but I did work out a system that worked great for us the week we were away.

I chose to take only one type of diaper to keep things easy. The BumGenius 3.0 is the diaper I depend on overnight, so it was an easy choice to take with me on vacation. I also took a medium size Planet Wise Wet Bag to store the wet/dirty diapers in. Knowing that I wouldn’t have my diaper sprayer with me on vacation, I decided to use Bummis Bio-Soft Flushable Liners to aid in clean up before washing my diapers. The liner, along with any solids, simply fell into the toilet after I removed it from my son at changing time. I then tossed the diaper into my wetbag until it was time to do laundry. When it came time to wash the diapers, I did the old dunk and swirl in the toilet to remove any residue left behind, then proceeded with my normal fluff wash routine. (A cold water wash to rinse, followed by a hot water wash with a double cold rinse using Charlie’s Soap to clean the diapers.) Because I had packed two days worth of diapers, I did fluff laundry every other day once my son was down for the night. By doing this, I would have a two day stash of clean diapers by morning (minus the one he was wearing). To make diaper changes easy, I placed a liner in each diaper after I stuffed the pockets, so they were ready to go when I grabbed one.

We had a great vacation, and I felt a sense of accomplishment by keeping up with my cloth diaper routine while away from home. The only thing I did differently (other than twice as many fluff laundry loads as usual) is I did use disposable wipes instead of my usual cloth wipes. For this trip, I found it easier than trying to stuff even more cloth in my already over-packed bags. I’ll never forget changing Brendan’s diaper while he laid in the stroller parked next to Cinderella’s Castle at DisneyWorld . The other memorable diaper change while on vacation took place during the flight home. About half way through the two and a half hour flight, I checked Brendan’s diaper and found it to be dirty. I made my way back to the bathroom where the changing table was and found the messiest diaper we had the entire trip. Of course, trying to change a diaper on a tiny changing table in a cramped airline bathroom presented quite a challenge, but ten wipes later, it was mission accomplished. It was worth the work though, as I have no doubt in my mind that had he been wearing a disposable diaper, I would have been cleaning up a major blow out. My BumGenius 3.0’s had saved the day.

Washing Cloth Diapers Away From Home? Yes You Can!

Soiled diapers: How do you store your diapers? Diaper Pail? Hanging Pail? Wet bag? What do you do use for on-the-go storage? Any tips/tricks for eliminating diaper pail and/or wet bag odors?

I wash diapers every 2-3 days, depending on how many she goes through. I wash when I am down to 2-4 diapers, so I have enough diapers to get me through washing. To store my diapers I use and trash bin with the foot lever lid, The 42L/13Gal size.

It fits the pail liners in it perfectly, I use either a planet wise pail liner or the XL Bummis one. I have two liners that I rotate with diaper washes. After I am done changing the diaper I pull the insert out of the pocket and place it on top of the inside of the diaper, fold in half and place in the bin. Now this works great if the diaper is not pooped. In that case I through the wipes and the insert in the bin and take the diaper to get the poop off, it then goes into the bin with the rest of them. I try not to get the diaper super wet and keep it folded in half to keep most of the water inside the diaper. I pull the inserts out right away because I am washing my hands any way and it makes throwing them in the wash way easier.

For odor control I sprinkle a little baking soda in the bottom of the trash bin before I put the liner back in. I do this about once a month or so. Every 2 or 3 months I also take the bin and rinse it out with water and soap and let it sit in the sun for a few hours.

When I am out I have a medium planet wise that I keep either in my purse or diaper bag, depending on how long we plan on being gone. For two of my other children I used a gallon Ziploc bag, it worked and did its job, but the wet bag is easier to wash out and holds up better.

How do you store your diapers?

It has taken me a little while to figure out what works best with cloth diapering 2 – my oldest is 22 months and my youngest is 8 months. I finally came up with a great plan that does the trick for my family.

My laundry room is across from the boys bathroom so I keep the diaper pail right inside that door so after a quick spray from the wonderful diaper sprayer ( I can’t imagine how I made it so long without one) I just take a few steps and it’s in the laundry room. I would highly recommend having at least 2 large diaper pail liners/bags. I only had one for a while and it wasn’t the best. Once I got my second one – I placed the dirty one in the wash with the diapers and the other was immediately placed in the pail and ready for more dirty diapers. (I used to just put the dirty ones in a big tub while waiting for the one and only diaper liner to wash and then air dry.)
I have enough diapers to do laundry every other day – with a few exceptions. The boys are almost in the same size for all the diapers except for a few of the AIO’s and the BG’s that we use for nighttime. Once the diaper are clean and dry I usually just throw all the clean diapers on top of the washing machine and fold them and put them in the boys room’s right away or as soon as I can. It goes with my personality of why do later what I can get down now and can cross off my list.

Each boy has a spot in his room for where the clean diapers are kept– I stuff all the pocket diapers and make up all the prefold’s with covers after they are dry so all I have to do is go and grab when it’s diaper changing time, that way I’m not trying to either stuff or lay a prefold out on a cover with a squirmy one on the changing table. Honestly – it doesn’t take that much more time at all and it might sounds crazy but I would rather stuff pockets or fold up prefold’s then fold baskets of regular laundry. Our system works so well that even daddy does diaper laundry too.
