The Whisperer Answers : Do I really need a wet bag when cloth diapering?

Many customers email me to ask what other items they need to have to cloth diaper. For the bare essentials obviously the diapers and my next suggestion is a wet bag. A wet bag is truly a lifesaver when cloth diapering. It can honestly make or break the success of cloth diapering.

For those of you that don't know what a wet bag is it essentially is a fabric bag that is laminated on the inside with fabric on the outside and holds dirty cloth diapers. It is a must for any diaper bag.

I do get the question, " Do I really, really need a wet bag to cloth diaper?" The black and white answer would be no but I tell people that if you store a dirty diaper in your regular diaper bag with all of baby's items it could get fecal matter and urine all over everything. That just wouldn't be good. Especially if you spouse or partner went into the diaper bag to find the soiled diaper contents all over the adorable outfit he or she purchase while baby was in utero!

The wet bag at our house is multi-purpose for us. In the summer time we also use it for wet swim suits. We do have a couple large wet bags so we can put wet towels, etc inside. I am especially loving the Planet Wise Wet Bags. They are the only wet bag on the market that has a 100% waterproof wet bag and has designed a patent pending method of even sealing the seams.
I definitely say a wet bag is a necessity when cloth diapering.

I love our wet bags! I received one as a gift from a friend- has 2 zippered pockets and I can use it to store clean and dirty diapers or diapers and a potty seat! I also have to Mommy's Touch small bags- I love the hanging loop! I keep it in the bathroom and take it down to the basement laundry when it's full... usually every other day... such an energy saver for this 7mo prego momma! I don't have a Planet Wise bag (yet), but I do love the patterns! Maybe I'll win one in a future fluff friday giveaway!

I feel my wetbag is essential , you could do w/o but i would not put my dirty dipes back into my clean bag w/o a bag of some kind. So to me if i did not have a wetbag i would be wasting lots of plastic :) so wetbags are much greener IMO :) great post !!!

A wet bag is a definite must for us! People ask me if cloth diapering when we're out is a pain, and with a wetbag, it's totally do-able. I haven't tried the Planet Wise brand, but the Jamtots one is handy since it can snap around the handle of the stroller, and it zips up to keep smells and any wet stuff inside.

I love my Planet Wise wet bag. My MIL was very impressed too.

The only way I can imagine anyone not needing a wet bag is if they never go outside.

I purchased a small Planet Wise wet bag with the intention of using it to store my soiled diapers. While the small size does easily hold one loaded one-size diaper - and potentially two if really crammed in there... I realized I should have ordered an additional bag in a larger size.

Since I also received a small basic wet bag as part of my BG Shop and Go package I decided this was a more appropriate size for storing the soiled diapers while on-the-go.

The drawstring certainly is not as quick and convenient as the zippered wet bag - but it works for trips to my parents (or a friend's) house where I will not need to tote the soiled diapers around with me. (It's also one of the more economical wet bags available - so if you're really trying to keep your CD costs down, this would be a good buy.)

I made the mistake of trying to use a travel size disposable wipe container for my wet wipes. Although I made it a point to wring the wipes out very well, they still managed to leak through the container and all over my diaper bag. UGH!

I now use my small Planet Wise wet bag for storing my clean, wet wipes.

A larger sized Planet Wise wet bag is on my "to buy and/or to try" list.

This is my third child in cloth diapers. That being said it took me that long to figure out what worked for me. When asked that I would say no. As I love love love the one I have and use it for more then just diapers, I could have easily done what I did with the other two, use a large ziplock bag. They work just the same ans wash out and wear for quite some time. I do how ever like the wet bag fashion wise, it is just way cuter:)

My friend used a large ziplock for years. That's why I got her a wetbag for her baby shower!

I started out w/o a wetbag and now I don't know how I did it! I have one hanging in my downstairs bathroom (where I do most diaper changes during the day) and one hanging from my baby's changing table upstairs. I also have a small one (thanks to your giveaway!) for my diaper bag which I love. Great idea for swimsuits adn towels, too. I guess I'll need another for when it's warmer outside! Yes, wetbags are a must! I would also add flushable liners to the list of something that can make or break cloth diapering--at least in my home!

Oh I totally agree! Luckily the one time I forgot my wet bag I had a plastic bag in the diaper bag, but they are definitely an essential! I have three and they get really good use. I use the Mama's Touch wetbags and have never had a leaking problem.

I love wet bags - I have one for my diaper bag and one that hangs in my bathroom for the "sprayed" diapers (no lugging drippy dipes around!)
They make things so much easier!

I've been debating on buying one...my diaper pail liner is not so good really...it's always moist on the outside-and I do my diaper laundry daily! I haven't been able to convince myself it is worth buying one for traveling if my one at home doesn't work well. ): I may try the Planet Wise one, though.

I wouldn't say it's a necessity (as i did it w/o one for a year..just used plastic bag). but wow, after i got one, i liked it SO much! One of those "if you're really desperate, you don't need it, but if you can can at all fathom buying one, DO!". I feel the same way about having a "diaper pail liner" i used (& reused until they got holes) plastic trash bags for a looong time, but finally at one point got a hanging pail...oh my...i'd get that before a wet bag if i had to wait between the two!

I agree - a wet bag is a must. They're also so fun to shop for, I love all the different fabric choices. I think a zippered wet bag is more functional than the drawstring ones.

I have two wet bags..a medium and an XXL one. I use both all the time and couldn't live without them. They are also great for when my toddler (who is daytime potty trained) has an accident and I need a place to put his soiled underwear and pants. I would love to add a cute Planet Wise bag...maybe with my next order...

I love my wet bags! i have 2 that I keep in my diaperbag. I use 1 for diapers and 1 for clothes, because we all now little ones get their clothes dirty just as much as their diapers!

I need another wet bag. We use ours often.

I have a wet bag for my diaper bag and it is great to have with me. I would really like to get one for the bathroom. I usually just take the diapers right out to the laundry room.

I currently have a cinch top wet bag and it works, but I have been dreading the time that I have a super messy poo diaper to put in there. The Planet Wise ones make SO MUCH MORE SENSE! Looks like I have found yet another thing that I "need"!

I definitely need our wet bags. We use a huge one in our pail and have one in the diaper bag. Makes things cleaner and keeps the stink controlled. I am loving those PlanetWise ones, they're so cute... unfortunately we don't have one of those....... yet ;)

I love my wet bags too! I have a planet wise medium size wet bag that I keep in my purse when I go shopping and don't want to bring the whole diaper bag. I have a large size planet wise wet bag for my diaper bag. I have 2 swaddlebees/blueberry pail liners for home use. I use one of the pail liners in a garbage can and that is what I put my daughters dirty diapers in... when I need to wash I exchange it with the other pail liner and I am ready to go. I don't know what I would do without these... I guess that I would be using a lot of plastic as others have commented.

well, of course you could just resuse plactic grocery bags...but a wet bag is much nicer, especially these pretty ones!

I have this exact wet bag that Kelly posted here and absolutely LOVE it! Planet Wise was kind enough to send me two of their bags as a gift and I use them daily. The larger one I use for diapers and whatever else gets icky when we're out and then the smaller one is my makeup bag for the car. Absolutely love that! I always run out with half my makeup on - if any - so right before I go in to a store...out comes my Planet Wise bag with my emergency makeup. lol

I have some really cheap wetbags from kellyscloset that I love!

However, the planetwise ones are so stylish! I haven't had any leaks with the ones I have, but I still want to try others!

I also love the PlanetWise bags. I bought the exact one you have on your site. I put wet cloth wipes in it and no leaks!!

TheClothDiaperWhisperer said...

I especially love any of the zippered wet bags. The Planet wise ones are unique in that all the seams are also sealed so it makes this wet bag the most leak proof in the market. You can even put standing water in it to test it out and it won't leak!

i love the planet wise bags. on those crazy days when i can't get to the diaper sprayer and pail in the bathroom, i just put everything in a large planet wise bag and wait until the evening to transfer to the pail. i swear there is never any smell in her room and just spraying everything off at the end of the day saves my hands and nails from the constant exposure to water throughout the day.

I put off buying one (seemed like a lot of money for just a bag, and we were pinching pennies), but once I got one I really wished I'd gotten one right from the beginning. It just makes things easier.

I didn't know about wet bags when I recently started cloth diapering, but I knew something would be needed for the diapers. I use a small, zippered bag that held a set of curtains. It works great and I just pop it in the wash after it has been used.
