Method to my Cloth Diaper Madness!

Method to my Cloth Diaper Madness!

We women are notorious for opening our closets and peering inside only to exclaim, “I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!” I’m guilty! I’m sure you are too, right? Thankfully, I don’t have the same problem when it comes to cloth... Ok, well, if truth be told, I do. Oftentimes I insist that my little man’s diapers match his clothes... even his pajamas match his nighttime diapers (as do my girls' nighttime cloth too). Obsessive? Yes, I know!

With the overwhelming amount of diapers I do have available I worked out a little routine which helps me rotate through my stash and ensure all the diapers in our stash get some lovin’!

For nighttime we used to use all bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diapers. However, I’ve grown weary from stuffing diapers and trainers for all three of my kids for night purposes therefore I’ve converted both Ilyas and my younger daughter Halimah over to the bumGenius Organic All-in-One One Size diapers for night-time. While these diapers aren’t typically suited for night-time, I’ve found if I add a Thirsties Hemp Insert to the diaper by simply laying it on top then these diapers work great for both my son and daughter for overnight. My oldest daughter is thankfully showing signs of being night trained soon! However, in the meantime, she wears the Happy Heinys pocket trainers stuffed with a premium prefold (these truly save me from the inevitable backache that comes from having to virtually dismantle the top bunk of her bed in order to change the sheets should she wet during the night)!

In the morning I change Ilyas into either a FuzziBunz diaper (sized or One Size), or a cute print from either Happy Heinys or Bumwear. Since he typically goes poo in the morning I prefer to use the pocket diapers because the fleece lining is very easy to blast clean with the diaper sprayer! Although, lately he’s been an unexpected marathon poo-er - so my best laid plans have oftentimes been thwarted.

On days when it feels like I’m living inside an oven I put him in a Kiwi Pie fitted and nothing else - we decide to go sans diaper cover unless we leave the house (and even then I’ve gone coverless a couple times - I just add a hemp fleece doubler beneath the bamboo soakers for added protection)!

Kiwi Pie fitted diapers are incredibly soft and absorbent yet completely breathable; perfect for hot days! Surprisingly, out of all the diapers I’ve tried the Kiwi Pie’s are the ONLY diaper my hubster has approved of thus. Therefore, on the weekends my little guy is wearing solely Kiwi Pie’s; otherwise hubby complains and takes off the diaper to allow him to crawl around the house “marking his territory” like a cat. Ummmm... no!

For naps, outdoor activities, trips, or visits to family and friends then we’re back in the bumGenius Organic All-in-One One Size diapers as well as the SoftBums and Gro Baby diapers. On laundry days I especially like to use the SoftBums and Gro Baby diapers since those inserts can typically withstand being in the diaper pail for a couple days without causing excessive odors and they don’t take up much space at all (they’re also great to travel with)!

We all have our own little quirks when selecting a diaper; what’s yours?

Fuzzi Bunz... with microfiber inserts when we go places, they are so trim and fit so well under clothes.

Fitteds and Thirsties covers at night, they've just outgrown their newborn Nanipoos, Mutts and Sugar Plum Babies I had, so I'm looking for the perfect size small still.

We also have a collection of random one sized pockets, I'm totally loving the Rocky Mountains right now.

My not-so-exciting method: send the velcro diapers with my son to the caretaker's in the morning, which means I choose ones with snaps when I diaper him myself. Brilliant, I know! We don't have enough diapers (let alone cute ones) to try matching or anything -- plus we cover them with clothes anyway. If I got to stay at home with him and saw the diapers more, I think I would care more about buying some cuteness, but for the time being, our stash is strictly utilitarian!

New to cloth...
I've been using a diaper service for my cloth diapers ever since my eight week old daughter was born. Love the service but don't want the expense. I wanted to wait till she was big enough to fit into one size diapers until I bought my own diapers. I've been looking into gro baby diapers but it seems the best thing to do is try several types. That can get expensive. I like to read about what experienced mommas are using. Thanks for the article.

I have yet to let Brendan go coverless in his Kiwi Pie's yet - he's such a heavy wetter. I'll have to try adding a hemp/fleece doubler like you suggested. The Kiwi Pies are just too cute to cover up! Funny thing though, yesterday my mom was visiting and she put one on Brendan w/o a cover and all was fine...

At this point, all we have is FuzziBunz and 2 BumGenius, but I do sometimes match the diaper to the day's outfit :)

What makes the kiwi pie fitteds stand out to your husband? I'm curious, because I had heard that the bumgenius 3.0 diapers are generally husband-approved! :)

I have diapers I use at certain times too! We use BG pockets for nighttime but I'm going to venture out soon and use a BSRB TIAN. Then for the morning poo we use a BG or FB. Then the rest of the day we use a mix of fitted diapers!

With disposables, my DD was ALWAYS undoing the velcro and attempting nude crawling. Well since switching to cloth, when I do use dipes w/ velcro, she has no interest in taking them off. Never even tried. So I really like velcro because I think I get a really good fit on her. For night we use a double stuffed SmartiPants almost every night. Sometimes I'll slip in a double stuffed Happy Heiny. I think getting a bG is next on the "list"

wait a minute, is your husband against all diapers whatsoever (minus the kiwi pie) or does he not like cloth diapers?

Oh, I choose whatever is clean and within arms reach. I am also getting so spoiled with my pocket diapers that my prefolds, flats, and covers are getting some serious neglect :o)

howsiewowsie and Amanda:

My hubby doesn't care for any of the cloth diapers except for the Kiwi Pie fitted diapers.

Honestly, he seems to think the other diapers squish our sons "boy parts" and, well, those are some essential parts to a boy/man. LOL He says the diapers feel too firm and thus he seems to think they're squishing his "stuff." I put a Kiwi Pie diaper on him just after I ordered several when they first came out... he held our son and noticed an immediate difference in the feel of the diaper (the Kiwi Pie's are so soft and fluffy and he didn't feel the same "firm" feeling he did with the other diapers so the Kiwi Pie's are now our only daddy approved diaper.

Now, with that said - he doesn't actually change the diapers.. so they're not daddy approved as far as changing the diapers are concerned. He's attempted to change our son's diaper a total of, 2 - MAYBE 3 times - and each time he gave up and said, "This is just too confusing."

He's only ever changed our daughters before that very rarely - so he just has a natural man's aversion to changing diapers - regardless if they're cloth or disposable. =) HA!

I loved hearing your story. We're mainly a prefold family. With boring white Bummis Wraps. So we don't have much to choose from. Luckily we're adding new diapers to our stash all the time. I'm sure I'd have a method to my madness if I had the chance.

DH prefers Gdiapers put on backwards or BG 3.0's.

I always use double or triple stuffed BG 3.0's for night-time.

For morning poos I usually use my BG Organics since I can always get the poop out of them better than any other diapers I have. For the rest of the day I use a variety. If we are going out, then I need something trim, so then it is either a gdiaper double stuffed or a BG Organic diaper. If we are staying home I venture into my Goodmama fitteds with a cover (my boys are heavy wetters), gdiapers, tri-folded prefolds with a cover, or BSRB's. I have a few other diapers, but right now they aren't getting much love.

Your article really makes me want to try a Kiwi Pie.

I agree with the method of choosing diapers partly based on how many people are gonna see them that day. Because why have cute diapers if no one gets to enjoy them?? :)

I'm very intrigued by kiwi pies for the times when I want to have my daughter go "nakey," as it's called in my house, without the potential messes.
