Smartipants: I Love This diaper!

Last month I placed my first fluff order in several months, in it, a diaper I couldn’t wait to try out… Smartipants One Size Diaper. I was thrilled when my order arrived; I couldn’t get the diaper washed and prepped soon enough. I read so many great things about this new diaper and I just had to try it out for myself. I was intrigued by its relatively low cost of just $14.95 (insert included), as well as the fact the diaper featured a snap closure which I prefer over hook and loop (aka velcro). I was also interested in testing the ability of being able to wash the diaper without removing the soiled insert first.

Once my new diaper was washed and ready to go I put it to use on my 19 month old son, Brendan. The fit was very similar to my bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diapers; I was quite pleased in that respect. After the first diaper change I felt funny just tossing the wet diaper in the pail without first removing the completely soaked insert. As most first time Smartipants users probably feel, I was somewhat hesitant to try washing it without removing the insert, but I figured it was worth a shot. When wash day rolled around two days later I was pleasantly surprised to find that yes indeed, the insert fell right out in the washing machine and my new Smartipants diaper was as clean as new.

In addition to the ease of washing, I love the snap closure and super trim fit. Initially I wondered if the single row of snaps would hold the diaper sufficiently without wing droop. I’m happy to report the diaper passed the test with flying colors. Not only did the diaper fit on my son wonderfully, it also fit fairly trim when using the insert that came with the diaper, as well as an additional hemp insert for extra absorption (Brendan is a very heavy wetter). While I've read some comments from other moms who thought the diaper was as bulky as the bumGenius One Size diapers, but in our case, it was more trim. Brendan is 26 pounds and wears the largest settings, so perhaps that has something to do with it.

Despite the fact I have a much bigger fluff stash than I really need, I am looking forward to adding a few more Smartipants diapers to my rotation. When we’re out and about I imagine they would be my top pick to take with me since I would simply dump my wet bag into the diaper pail or washing machine when I got home – no more digging through a wet bag and pulling wet, cold inserts out of my pocket diapers.

I just got my Smartipants and am really looking forward to not having to pull out an insert! Thanks for sharing your experience. :)

I have this diaper. I'm not a big fan. I mean, it's a good diaper, but it's not the best, and it leaks out the legs if my daughter has a poop explosion.

I love my smartipants also! I was a little skeptical of the workmanship when I first saw them, but they are holding up better than all my other diapers! I also love that you don't have to remove the insert before washing. And the colored edge on the insert makes for easy sorting when I'm folding and stuffing my clean dipes.

Thanks for this review! I keep hearing such great things about Smartipants that I'm going to have to buy one (despite my stash also being much too large!)

I love our smartipants, too! I had an "aha" moment reading your post--I never thought about using the smartipants while out-and-about for the reason you stated....so I don't have to dig through a dirty wetbag and pull out all the inserts! Great idea! Thanks for the info!

I'd love to try them, too! But for the record, I actually don't pull out my bumG inserts... on wash day I hold them upside down and shake and the inserts fall right out into the machine. Just fyi. :)

I love Smartipants diapers. It was one of my first diapers tried once I jumped on the clothdiapering bandwagon. It used to be our overnight diaper in fact. I too love that you don't have to remove the inserts before tossing in the wash! Your lil man looks way smart and cute in his Smartipants!!

Still waiting for my first child to arrive, I never thought of pulling out old cold dirty inserts from the wet bag. I'll have to keep this idea in mind. I have one Smartipants in our stash to try.

I adore my Smartipants - I am fairly new to cloth diapering still, but love how great they fit and how easy they are to clean too! It makes it hard for me to use other pocket diapers since I am used to Smartipants. :)

My son is a heavy wetter too. I am always hesitant to add another insert because I don't want to add bulk. I have just been changing the Smartipants more often than I do my other diapers. My 24.5 pounder is still on the medium setting so if I add an insert, I will probably have to go up a size.

I would love to try them. Currently I am using all Bum Genius but would love to add some more!

Smartis were the first diaper I tried and they were great! I can even use them at nap time without an extra insert.

Great idea as to taking them with you on when you're on the go! For us, i think nighttime use would be good, to, as I use a small trash can instead of setting up another diaper pail upstairs. Then, in the morning, I bring it down and empty it out. Ooooh, and if I had a top loader, I'd totally do what Moriah suggested!!

I missed the boat on this one, I started CDing right when this diaper came out and they had their introductory prices. Well, I was so set on "natural fibers" that I didn't order three for $36 and change. Now I wish I had! It would have been such an easy diaper for Dad, Grandma, and me to use. I really appreciate stay dry technology now. Oh well. I LOVE their colors too! All of them are gorgeous (at least in the pictures) I have never seen one in real life. : )

Sounds like a diaper I would like and the price isn't that bad either.

Pockets aren't for me b/c of the stuffing and synthetic fibers (gives LO a rash) but I will be recommending Smartipants to a friend switching to cloth and looking for something economical.

I was contemplating buying some Smartipants, but I was hesitant because I'd already spent so much money on other cloth diapering systems. Well, your blog convinced me to take the plung. I am happy to report that I did buy some and I love them. I finally found the diaper that works for both me and my husband. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I love this amazing creation. Smartipants has saved me money so i don't have to purchase every time she grows out of them. My little girl can run around feeling comfortable and dry. I love the snap closure, super easy to take off and put on. Thanks SMARTIPANTS :)
