When I had my first baby, my parents and others told me how lucky I was that disposable diapers were so easy compared to the cloth diapers of their day. At the time, I didn’t know anyone who was cloth diapering, and I didn’t give it a second thought. I used disposables with my daughter though potty training and with my son for the first 16 month of his life.
Without any conscious decision on my part, I gradually felt little nudges to look into modern cloth diapering. Initially, someone I knew registered for cloth diapers for their baby shower; so I spent time exploring them online. Then, some of my sister’s friends started cloth diapering. Finally, a good friend of mine came for a visit and was using cloth diapers. She asked me if I ever thought about it, and I said, “Yes, BUT here’s my reasons why I don’t…” Following is my list of reasons why I would NEVER cloth diaper:
1. I don’t want to have to swish poopy diapers in the toilet
2. I don’t want to have to carry dirty diaper around with me when I go out.
3. I have enough laundry as it is. I don’t want to add anymore.
That very night after my friend visited, I was up all night thinking about the benefits of cloth diapering and how cute her baby looked with his fluff. I spent the following week doing research and by the end of the week I had purchased 9 bumGenius 3.0 One Size pocket diapers, a diaper sprayer, a FuzziBunz hanging diaper pail liner, a small wet bag, bumGenius bamboo wipes, and some flushable liners. So… how did I overcome my 3 biggest hesitations?
1. The diaper sprayer: This is the most amazing cloth diapering tool. I don’t know how people cloth diaper without it. I can tell you I definitely would NOT!
2. I keep a small wet bag inside my diaper bag so I always have a place for wet or soiled diapers. I also try to use flushable liners when I’m out so I can just drop the mess in the toilet.
3. I know it probably sounds strange to some of you, but I really love washing my cloth diapers. It’s different than regular laundry because I don’t have to do all the folding and sorting. I just sit and stuff them and they all get put away in the same spot.
My friend urged me to just buy one or two cloth diapers to try it out. She also advised me I could still use disposable at night or when I went out. Instead, I just jumped in with both feet and haven’t looked back. I haven’t purchased any disposable diapers or wipes since my son was 16 months (he’s now 22 months). Now I always encourage new moms to try cloth diapering.
My only regret? I wish I had started sooner!

to be honest, i love doing my diaper laundry too! it's the first "household chore" that i actually look forward to--they're just so darn cute!
i like washing them too! That was my rebuttle to someone asking about doing more laundry with cloth diapers and she looked at me like i was nuts!
This sounds so much like me. I think my reasons were only slightly different. But like you, I love doing the diaper laundry. It is easy to do and it gives me little breaks every now and then from the normal stuff that runs my house. :)
I love washing mine, too.
Exactly this: "I really love washing my cloth diapers. It’s different than regular laundry because I don’t have to do all the folding and sorting. I just sit and stuff them and they all get put away in the same spot."
It's about the only thing in the house that gets done well and all the time. It's simple and relaxing, and easy to check off on the huge to-do list.
what's up with loving CD laundry?!?!? i love it, too!!! =) who would have ever thought in a bajillion years that i would look forward to doing any type of laundry, let alone dirty diapers. =)
I really need to purchase the diaper sprayer. That is the one thing we are missing.
Great post. I jumped in with both feet too! Just recently! In fact, I still need to hook up my diaper sprayer. I'm going to love that thing!!
Switching wasn't nearly as daunting as I thought it would be. Happy to know that you jumped in with both feet!
the diaper sprayer is AWESOME! Also, when I wash the cloth diapers, I get a lot of satisfaction that it's one less disposable I have to buy!
I was the exact same way when I was newly pregnant- it was pampers swaddlers and a diaper deco all the way! I wish I could remember what made me even consider cloth but I'm so glad I did. We used sposies the first month, but have been cloth diapering full time now for about 4 months and it's the best decision we made! Even daddy likes them now and helps pick them out!
And shh...I like doing diaper laundry too!
The best part about cloth is the cute colors you can get. It makes me happy to change a diaper.
I like doing cloth diaper laundry too...now I just need to get me a sprayer.
I guess I never had a doubt that I would end up going the route of cloth diapering. I don't like the idea of putting disposables in the landfill. And it definitely is fun to try out different types of cloth diapers and to have different colors. My baby isn't here yet, but I can't wait to get started!
I was the exact same! I used disposables with my daughter and didn't think twice about it until my second was born. I switched, and I LOVE it! and now design my own diapers. My only regret is not starting sooner too!
I love my diaper laundry too! Feels great to have a basket of soft, fluffy diapers =)
