There are so many great cloth diapering options out there, I want to draw your attention to one more! I believe people who decide to cloth diaper strive to get the best value for their money without sacrificing baby's comfort. What if you could combine the value of a prefold with the comfort/ease of a pocket diapers? Let me tell you how I did...
I love my pocket diapers. I adore the ease of using a pocket diaper as well as their ability to wick mosture away from baby's bum. My favorite and trusted night-time diaper is the bumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diaper. I found the 100% polyester suedecloth used in them is wonderful for keeping baby dry for long periods of time. The only thing with these is that they can be a little more pricy when looking to use them all the time.
On the other hand I like the great value of my Chinese prefolds. They are relatively inexpensive and are often called the "work-horse" of a cloth diapering stash (I know they are mine). The downfall of these are that they don't usually hold up over night and you have to add liners to wick moisture away.
So, I decided to go searching for something that I could inexpensively add to my pre-existing stash (which largely includes Chinese prefolds and microfiber inserts) to give me the same functionality as my wonderful pocket dipes.
While searching I came across this amazing product that will do just that! It's called the bumGenius Stay Dry Insert Sock!
These insert socks have many benefits to them.
1. They are made of the same suedecloth used in my beloved bumGenius diapers. Essentially transforming my prefolds and extra microfiber inserts into pocket diapers when coupled with a good diaper cover (I prefer the one size Wonderwraps).
2. That's right, these insert socks are big enough to stuff a premium Chinese prefold or two inserts with ease.
3. These are great for using when you are out because like the popular two in one diaper systems, all you need to pack are a few pre-stuffed insert socks and an extra diaper cover and you're ready to go. This frees up valuable space in your diaper bag.
4. As I mentioned before, these are SO inexpensive (but very well made). If you already have prefolds/inserts and some diaper covers you can convert them with insert socks for a fraction of the cost it would be to buy all new pocket diapers. And in my opinion they work just as well!

That is very interesting. I am shying away form pocket diapers because I worry about the price (you know, aren't 6 pocket diapers more expensive than 2 cover diapers with 3 inserts each?). How do you feel about that expense? Does this method make it worth it? Is it bulky?
Thank you for any help you can provide. I am new to cloth diapering and need all the advice I can get!

That is so awesome. I can't even begin to fathom the amount of awesomeness this post encompasses. I think I will be buying a bunch of these now! :)
Ooh, that's amazing! I'm definitely going to get some of these in the near future.
Thanks for sharing!
I totally agree! I've got a few of those insert socks and love them!
It's so funny you blogged about this, bcz I just purchased my first BG sock last week to try out, and I LOVE it with my prefolds!!. I am surprided no one really raves about them. I stumbled on them looking for insert alternatives that were not too expensive. It really gives baby that dry feeling w/no leaks.
Hrm, interesting idea but... isn't it the same thing as putting a liner over the prefold to keep baby dry? Even though this solution is less expensive than pocket diapers, it would work out to basically the same price as buying the bumGenius Stay Dry Inserts for their Flip system (and function the same). You can usually get liners for $1/each retail, or buy fleece and cut it yourself for a fraction of the cost.
Don't get me wrong - I love the bumGenius Stay Dry for Flip, and I think their insert socks would be a great idea, but if your goal is to cloth diaper as *cheaply* as possible, these really don't seem to fit the bill. I guess I would consider them to be a low-moderate cloth diapering budget?
That IS a great idea for sure. Looking forward to trying it out!
That's awesome! One of the listed benefits is "keeps microfiber away from your baby's skin". I'm new to cloth diapering (and to mothering) so I don't know why this is important. Does anyone know why? Thanks!
I had not heard of these... thanks for sharing.. Great idea. I may have to look into getting some.
Wondering... do you have to remove insert from sock before washing??
Wow! I need to give these a try! When I run out of diapers before a washing, I usually end up laying a folded prefold in a Flip cover, but I hate loosing the stay-dry benefit of the regular flip inserts. It sounds like this way I could use prefolds and still my dd's bum dry!
Is THAT what the socks are for?!
yeah, that's genius! Yay, something new to try.
Wish I discovered this before. I bought the ozo cozy stay dry pre folds that has a suede cloth sewn on one side of the pre fold but they pile up within one wash and they seem uncomfy to baby's bum..love the suede cloth used on BGs!
sõ, do you have to remove the insert from the sock before washing?
