Revolution or Addiction?

Econobum One-Size & Insert
I started cloth diapering about 4 months ago. Before we considered kids, I “knew” I would use disposables. There wasn’t a question in my mind. Then, when I had to start thinking about two in diapers, I considered cloth but not seriously. Then, after having two in diapers for almost 6 months and not seeing an end in sight, I made the leap of faith one day. I bought three covers and then a dozen prefolds, and started using cloth on both kids during the day. Then, about a month later, I doubled our stash with an Econobum package. I have also added five one-sized pockets, four fitteds, and four hemp inserts to our stash over the past four months. After about two months, I had a large enough stash to cloth diaper full time, and we have only used a handful of disposables sense. And now I only have one child in diapers full time...

But, it hasn’t stopped me from researching cloth diapers more. I know I don’t need any more diapers, but I can’t help myself. I want to see what is out there. Luckily I am a penny-pincher most of the time, so I haven’t had a strong urge to buy just yet. I keep researching little diapers for if/when we have a third child. I can’t stop reading the posts on discussion boards, picking up little tidbits that might be useful later. I think I am addicted…

Just a week or so ago, I made the switch to cloth wipes thanks to the discussion board on DiaperShops.com’s Facebook page (and Stacy, the question answerer extraordinaire). Initially I thought it would be a pain and more work, but now I love not having to deal with any diaper trash! And since I only need to use 2-4 wipes a day, it is easy too.

But it doesn’t stop there. Now that I cloth diaper, I am looking into more natural/less expensive options for things around the house. I have started to hang/line dry some of our clothes. I am using vinegar or Rockin’ Green to mop the floors. I even learned that OxyClean is great for cleaning bathrooms from a post on The Cloth Diaper Whisperer Facebook page and put it into action that night. Our shower hadn’t looked that clean since we replaced it over two years ago.

I wonder why cloth diapering will take me next. It has already changed our lives in just four months!

This is exactly the progression I made. I now use almost all Shaklee products--they have really economically-priced dishwasher detergent, laundry detergent, cleaners, etc. It's all super concentrated so you need just a little bit.

There are worse things to be addicted to, and this "addiction" is benefiting your children so it can't be bad! haha I can come up with a million excuses!

I do wish I found the cloth wipe love though. I still use them occasionally but I haven't found any that are soft enough for DS's sensitive skin. Maybe one day...

Hi My name is Tanya, and I am a cloth diaper addict. I live, breath, and think cloth diapers. I have accepted this and moved past shame to a happier place.

I can really relate to this! My son is 12 weeks old and it has been a huge surprise how much I enjoy cloth diapering. Not only that, but how much it occupies my brain... researching things, finding new and better ways to do it, thinking about the new diapers I want to buy, etc. I really wasn't expecting an addiction when I chose to cloth diaper!

I can relate! I used disposables on my first two, and on my third for a few months before I decided to give cloth a try. Now when someone asks what I want for Christmas or my birthday (they are really close together), I am considering telling them I want cloth diapers! I find myself looking at them online all the time. My stash isn't where it needs to be (found that out after having a sick baby and went through all but two diapers in one day), so I'm glad I get to keep looking and buying!

i love my cloth. i still need more covers, i think...2 dozen dipes with only 3 covers! cant afford more, right now, but i try to make do; ive gotten pretty good at predicting when she poops. lol. im, also, feeling the cloth wipe love...SO MUCH EASIER! lol!

i, too, have progressed. i line dry ALL of mine and my daughters laundry, not just the dipes.baking soda is great for a good cleaning for plastic baby gear. i try to get wooden toys because theyre more natural. i use more homeopathic remedies [hylands for teething...i want a baltic amber necklace SO BAD for her.] and i try to limit tylenol. she has to make up one shot and if she has the same reaction she did the last time she got shots, then shes not getting anymore.

im looking at all of my choices for both my daughter and myself a lot closer, now. im a big researcher when it comes to decisions on toys and products and such, anyway, i dont know WHY i just mindlessly did some things [like give tylenol] without researching the long term effcts or if theres a more natural place to start and see if that works before chemically changing her brains reaction to pain and whatnot!

I'm with you! I didn't ever think I'd be a cloth diapering mama, but now I love looking at what's out there even though we don't need any more diapers. :) And we've started using Rockin Green for cleaning around the house too.

I hear ya! It has changed our household as well. Shortly after changing tocloth, we changed to cloth wipes as well. I ordered the planet wise wet bag with ten wipes. The minute I got them I studied them and made a bunch more on my sewing machine. We have 4 kids so when we buy ice cream we get those big plastic tubs, and they are now diaper soakers! I also used quit buying paper towels and now use flat fold diapers and have found they work way better!
