My mother is not too fond of my cloth. Come to think of it, my husband isn’t exactly enjoying the ride either. Sometimes when others find out I use cloth, they look at me like I’ve shaved my head. Cloth might be making a comeback, but it’s not exactly embraced with open arms by everyone. In fact it seems far from it.

I found my support from my fabulous mom friends at spokanemamas.org. A friend I met through the group, and her sister were also considering cloth. Together we researched our options, and shared tips, and trial. Each of us found cloth love in a different way, but the experience helped us bond. I found appreciation for Blueberry one size, and my friend liked gDiapers, and Rocky Mountain diapers.

Having someone to relate with is the best support for cloth diapering and staying committed to it. In fact, I think it’s even started a movement in our group. We’ve met other moms who cloth diaper, and have even convinced some other moms to try it out. Maybe it’s not so uncommon after all.

Finding support is a great way to keeping committed to cloth, but it’s also a great way to spread the word. Next month our group is ordering a few items from Kelly's Closet and offering them as door prizes to members! Who knows, maybe our entire group will one day convert to cloth and we will have created a cloth community in our city!

If you are interested in starting a cloth diapering group, or just want to find other moms in your area, you can find or start a mom’s group on Meetup.com, CafeMom, and several others places on the web.

Keeping Committed to Cloth!

As many of you many have seen, Friday on ABC's Good Morning America, green living expert, Sara Snow, sang the praises of cloth diapers! In this informative segment, Snow talked about earth friendly ways to diaper your baby and featured gDiapers, bumGenius and Flip diapers, saying that she intended to use cloth on her baby due in a couple of months. We couldn’t be happier that cloth diapers – especially some of our favorites – are getting such great national attention and glowing endorsement from this respected expert. We wish Sara the best of luck with her cloth diapering experience!!

Cloth Diapers Touted on GMA (and found at Kelly’s Closet!)

1. Try before you buy
What I thought I would like and what I ultimately liked were two very different things. I thought I would like gDiapers for their hybrid flexibility, but I ended up loving bumGenius All-in-ones and Blueberry Deluxe One Size pocket diapers instead. I thought I would prefer hook and loop (Velcro) for its ease, however, I much prefer snaps because they don’t “catch” in the wash.

Don’t go out and buy a bunch of one type of diaper from the very beginning. Try one or two of a variety of types - then place a big order when you decide what works best for your family.

2. Patience is a virtue: wait for the bargain
Especially for those on a limited budget, you should know that different diaper brands and diaper stores run a lot of “specials.” If you’re able to wait and be patient, you will probably get the diapers that you love for a discount, or with free shipping, or with some other bonus. Kelly’s Closet has a different discount/promotion almost every week! You just have to wait for “your” diaper to be the one on sale. You can add to your stash a little over time – this will help keep a low impact on your bank account.

3. Accessories are not included
While you don’t “have” to have accessories to cloth diaper, there are a few that really help. In my life, the diaper sprayer, various Planet Wise wet bags, and “cloth diaper friendly” diaper cream are the three things I couldn’t live without. It’s good to remember to add in your personal “extras” when making your decision and cloth diaper budget.

4. The Scoop on Poop
I’ll come right out and admit it; I was terrified of the poop. The reality is, you will have to deal with poop if you cloth diaper. With that said, you would also have to deal with poop if you use disposables (we call them poop-splosions in my house). Dealing with poop is just part of being a parent. So prepare yourself to get up close and personal, regardless of your choice of diapers.

5. How you wash your diapers matter
When I first started reading about all the complicated wash routines and the “cloth diaper friendly” detergents, I thought it was just a marketing technique to get me to buy more things that I really didn’t need. I planned to just do the diapers my regular way with regular detergent. But the hype is true; repelling and the stinkies are real!

You do need to do a “special” wash routine (basically just a few extra rinses - it's best to keep it simple!) and use a cloth diaper friendly detergent. Rockin' Green detergent is great and I would love to use it on all our clothes. Cloth diaper laundry really is not that bad; I actually enjoy hanging the diapers on the line, there’s something really fulfilling and wholesome about it. Just be prepared with a good laundry routine and cloth diaper friendly detergent.

6. If the onesie fits… it might not
Even the trimmest cloth diaper doesn’t fit as trimly as a disposable. Your baby’s bum will look a little “fluffy.” You will soon begin to see this as cute and accessorize accordingly, but for now, keep this in mind. When you purchase all those cute, tiny infant clothes in advance, remember you might need to size up with pants or look for things that are a little longer in the torso (Carter’s onesies tend to run long) to accommodate for the bigger (yet cuter) bum.

7. No question is stupid
At first, I was embarrassed by how little I knew. I was certain my questions were stupid. I soon realized two things: First, if you have a question, then other people probably have the same question so go ahead and ask! Second, the cloth diapering community is incredibly supportive, helpful, and kind. They are ready and willing to answer your questions (at least the people at Kelly’s Closet always have been for me!) and many of them enjoy talking about cloth diapering and helping out newbies. So go ahead and ask, because there are no stupid questions (in the world of cloth).

8. If you do it, they will come around
When I began to think about cloth diapering, I dreaded telling my family. I was sure they would think I was crazy. And, at first, they did. Ultimately they saw how easy it is, how cute cloth diapers can be, and how much better it is for the environment. Above all, they saw that it was important to me and my husband, and they wanted to support our choice. They all came around and they are all 100% supportive. Don’t be afraid to cloth diaper because of what other people think. They’ll probably come around much more quickly than you imagine.

9. You might save money… or you might just get addicted
Cloth diapering is supposed to save money, and if you buy some of the basic “systems,” it really does. But cloth diapers are really cute! There are all sorts of different kinds, and you will probably get sucked in and want to try all the cute new styles and prints. So buyer beware, cloth diapering is addictive, and you might not end up saving a ton of money if you are always buying the newest, cutest cloth diaper. But you’ll still be saving the environment!

10. There’s more than one way to cloth diaper
There are probably as many different cloth diapering “solutions” as there are cloth diapering families. What worked for my best friend and her son just isn’t quite right for me and my daughter. You can read and research all you want, but soon you’re just going to have to try it. Some things will work, others won’t; you’ll figure out your “solution” step by step. Be patient with yourself and with cloth diapers, and don’t be afraid to try something innovative!

10 Things I Wish I’d Known When I Started Cloth Diapering…

One day over breakfast, Jason and Kim Graham-Nye came across an interesting fact. They discovered conventional disposable diapers are the third largest contributors to landfills in the world and yet only five percent of the population uses them. It was a fact of stunning proportion met by another amazing fact. A single disposable diaper can take up to 500 years to biodegrade in the landfill. Well, that got the Jason and Kim thinking, since they were about to have a baby themselves. At 60 diapers a week until toilet training kicks in, compounded by the possibility of having more than one child... well, it was beyond comprehension. And so they gasped. Did they want to jump on the landfill train? Absolutely not! What would the neighbors say? How would they face the world on Earth Day? And what about their garbage can? Could it contain it all?

It was too much to imagine and so they did what any two self respecting, socially responsible people do in a situation like that, they began researching an alternative. Obviously, disposables were out. Cloth used too much water for the water conscious couple living in drought-stricken Australia. Jason and Kimberly discovered a Tasmanian company that made flushable diapers, right in their own backyard! Thrilled with the discovery and their belief in the product, they bought the worldwide rights (excluding Australia and New Zealand), raised several million dollars, improved the product and brought the concept to the United States (in Portland, Oregon).

Fair Dinkum
The company’s motto, Fair Dinkum, is an Australian expression that means being genuine and real with everyone you encounter. That is gDiapers philosophy toward their business, their people, their customers and the planet.

gDiapers is also about children too (they’re a diaper company afterall)! If there's one thing they understand, it is that the needs of children don’t wait until the end of the workday. Until the Industrial Revolution came along and separated parents and children, families always worked together. So, gDiapers encourages their working parents to bring their kids to work. They provide an on-site child development center. If mom needs to nurse or wants some playtime with her baby, gDiapers is set up to accommodate her needs. If a child is sick, by all means, go home. We hope everyone feels better soon.

People, planet, profit = fair dinkum.

What are gDiapers?
gDiapers are the best of cloth diapers and disposable in one eco-friendly diaper. gDiapers, which stands for green diapers, consist of a washable, cotton outer little gPant (92% cotton and 8% spandex), snap-in liners (polyurethane coated nylon) and a plastic-free biodegradable diaper gRefill. The biodegradable gRefills are made from cellulose rayon coverstock, a fluffed wood pulp interior, and super absorber. They are free from elemental chlorine, latex, perfumes, dyes, and plastic.

gDiapers recently introduced reusable cloth inserts to the product lineup. Each gCloth insert is made from two layers of soft 100% polyester microfleece to keep baby dry and two layers of hemp/cotton fleece to absorb wetness and lock in moisture.

All items are made of breathable material just like sports clothing. So, babies stay dry and happy and are far less likely to get diaper rash. Can't flush? It's ok to toss our biodegradable diaper gRefills because they're plastic-free. Or garden compost the wet ones. They'll break down in 50-150 days.

Our products have passed all necessary testing and are in full compliance with Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act regulations. The CPSIA bans lead and phthalates in children’s products and mandates third party testing and certification, all of which gDiapers has passed with flying colors.

Why choose gDiapers?
For the last 40 years there have been but two choices in diapers. Cloth or disposable. That’s it. Now gDiapers offers a third option. 100% biodegradable*, flushable diapers. gDiapers puts waste where it belongs, in the toilet. Not the landfill.

You can use both gCloth and gRefills with little gPants. Our system is designed to offer you two diapering options with one diaper cover. Use gCloth at home and gRefills when you’re out and about. Best of all, you only need one type of diaper cover whether you flush, compost, toss or wash.

gDiapers are designed using the Cradle to Cradle** design principles of Bill McDonough and his firm MBDC. That means everything that goes into our gRefills gets re-absorbed back into the eco-system in a neutral or beneficial way. You’re turning waste into a resource and giving something back to the planet while reducing your family's footprint. Just think of the standing ovation you’ll get from the planet.

*Certified 100% biodegradable per ASTM standards in commercially managed and home composts..
**Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM is a certification mark of MBDC.

Fluff Friday 50 - 2 Giveaways!

Ok- I thought you would all get a kick out of this.

On most of my trips-whether business related or personal I try to bring cloth diapers with me for my one year old son, Riley. I even cloth diapered Riley in Vegas last year when we attended a children's show!

On my last business trip however I left on Sunday out west and flew back the next evening on a red-eye flight so unfortunately cloth diapers wasn't an option. The reason why it wasn't an option is because I didn't want to check luggage and only took one small bag for both Riley and myself.

So an overwhelming sense of guilt pours over me. How can I visit a cloth diaper manufacturer with my son in disposables? I just can't. It seemed unethical. Now really- were they going to check to see if he was in disposables? No- but they could ask- and they did!

So I go buy a small package of gDiapers. My thought is I can have Riley wear a pocket diaper (as a cover) and place a gDiaper insert in it. So the Friday before I left I thought I'd do a test day just to make sure my "hybrid" system worked. Before I left for the shop I took the flushable inserts and layed them into 6 diapers (3 Smarti Pants and 3 bumGenius). To my amazement the system worked terrific. Super absorbent and trim.

A couple of hours into the morning I changed him and he had a you know what. Honestly everything was contained and even stayed on the insert. So- I thought I would go ahead and do the inaugural flush. I read the directions- tear down each site of the insert, put in toilet, and swish.

I flushed- uh oh. Clogged- instantly. I swish the "stuff" around with the swivel stick provided. Nothing and the toilet almost over-flowed.

The water was 1/2 inch from the top and I didn't have a plunger here at the new shop.

So, do I endorse the use of gDiapers? I asked myself the question "Flush, Compost, or Toss?" (as written on the home page of gDiapers) I choose composting. When traveling I would toss but I at least know that it will take about 60-90 days to compose vs 500+ years for a disposable. I would hesitate to recommend flushing the insert- especially in the newer-low,flow toilets (like ours at the shop). What is nice about the flushable insert is that it is compost-able in about 60 days. See video of how the insert decomposes vs a typical disposable diaper.

After I got back from my business trip I did learn the gDiapers has now come out with gCloth Inserts. The insert is made of hemp/cotton and is topped with 4 layers of a soft microfleece. I have some on order and will be testing them out as soon as they arrive and will let you all know what I think.

I would love to hear any feedback you have about this "hybrid" system.
