The two most valuable things I have learned about cloth diapering, whether its one child, or more than one, are that wet bags are invaluable, especially for eliminating plastic bags from your life, and also that One-Size diapers are a life saver. We are also experimenting with cloth wipes for additional cost savings and waste reduction.

In case you hadn't heard of them before, planet wise wetbags are these fantastic fabric, waterproof bags, that you can use to hold your diapers. Whether you are on the run, on vacation, or at home. They come in different adorable prints, and 3 convenient sizes. So far, I've ordered the small art deco and the bumble deco--which has a cute bright yellow lining inside. These bags are great for carrying two to three diapers from my toddler or newborn.

We use only One-Size diapers, just in case I forget to bring a diaper for someone (a lesson I learned when my first two were in disposables, a baby can fit in a toddler diaper, but a toddler cannot fit in a baby sized diaper. This is assuming you remember to pack diapers at all, haha!) I ordered one size diapers for my toddler when she was 19 months old. I ordered one sized diapers in the hopes that we would be able to use them for the new baby once the toddler was out of diapers. My husband was still reluctant to use cloth on the baby we were expecting, so I thought I would take it slow and see how it went. As a compromise, we agreed to switch to cloth for the toddler, and we would also use cloth on the newborn, but not for the first 6 weeks, when laundry would be daunting. We requested diapers as one of the games at my baby shower, and had more than enough disposables, in fact, I haven't had to buy any since the baby was born (5/19/11). We ended up cloth diapering after about two weeks, since I ended up being able to deliver normally (VBA2C rather than c/section), and I was getting back into the laundry rhythm for our toddler.

This happened to be around the time that bumGenius was running a buy 5 get one free sale, so we stocked up on those, for both kids, and I also ordered several Kawaiis, Rumparooz, and most recently Fuzzibunz. My absolute favorite thing is that if I run out of diapers before I can run the laundry, I can simply adjust the snaps (or elastic) for whomever I am using it for. We have also tried to take advantage of the Kelly's Closet one-size diaper coupon deals, whereby you get one free diaper with a certain minimum purchase. I have been having some leakage issues with my newborn, but I think it is more of a matter of him being in between snap sizes than anything else. I am experimenting with fit to figure out what's going on. One-size diapers have been wonderful for us. I definitely don't miss the $20/box expenditure that we were making before we made the switch, and that was when I only had one in diapers full-time, and one wearing them only at night!

Diapering More Than One: Some Pointers

My name is Erin and I live in sunny Florida with my hubby and two little lovelies: Leonard (nearly 3) and Isabela (20 months).  I am a SAHM and a full-time Elementary Education student as well.  I am also the author of a little blog called The Hesitant Domestic.  I blog about everything under the sun, but mostly crafting, faith, and healthy living.

My first experience with cloth diapering was when I was pregnant with my son and I got it in my head that I really wanted to cloth diaper.  I wanted to find an affordable option so I purchased a prefold kit from Bummis.  Once my son finally got here, I kinda freaked out about using the cloth diapers.  He was a few weeks old when we started with them and I was completely unsure about the fit, how I put them on, would they work right, were they comfortable, etc.  They seemed so bulky on him and I just didn’t know what to do.  Being the only person in my group of friends who cloth diapered and with no one to ask for help, I sold them on Craigslist and continued on with sposies feeling pretty defeated.

When I was pregnant with my daughter I was really fortunate to be a part of a really great mommy message board and it seemed as though many of the moms were going to be cloth diapering their babies.  With the thought of buying sposies for TWO babies looming over my head, I figured some serious research was in order.  I would no longer be working once my daughter was born and anywhere we could save money would be a good thing.  After much research, questions, I tried out a couple used Haute Pockets from a mom on my message board, I was HOOKED!

I am not going to lie, cloth diapering two children is NOT easy at first, especially when you are just starting out and building a stash.  I didn’t have a ton of money to buy fancy diapers so we bought a lot of Kawaii pockets.   I really love them and recommend frequently to CD newbies.  We also use Bumgenius pockets and I even bought some prefolds and covers as a desperate attempt to expand our CD supply on the cheap.  I actually LOVE my prefolds now and am so thankful for a little contraption called the Snappi!  It’s a little overwhelming at first, but after a month or so you get the hang of it.

Here are some tips for the mommy with two bums (or more, yikes!) in fluff.
  • Build a stash.  You will be doing laundry every single day if you don’t have an adequate stash.  My kids were a bit older when we got started so they weren’t going through a ton of diapers a day so we were able to get by with a stash of 50 diapers, maybe a bit more.  Decide how many you use a day for each child and multiply by 2 or 3.  That’s how many you will need.  We had to CD part time for a little while to build a stash, but it still made a huge difference.
  • Keep up with the wash!  Nothing worse than 5 days worth of stinky diapers.  I washed every 3 days when mine I had two in cloth.  Try not to stress about all the stuffing, just separate the pockets from the inserts and be on your way if you are too busy.
  • Try prefolds!  Even if they scare you now, give them a shot once you are comfortable in your routine.  They are cheap and so much easier to use than you think!  Plus, no STUFFING!
  • Get connected!  Keep up with blogs, message boards and websites where you can learn from other CDing moms and get tips and encouragement.
Now that I only have one in diapers, it’s a breeze!  My stash is half the size and while I still wash every 3 days (it’s just a good idea to prevent stinkies) they are much smaller loads.  Cloth diapering has been such a special experience that I am a little sad that my daughter is starting to show signs of wanting to potty train!  What will I do with no fluff?!?!  I guess I will just have to keep spreading the word and hopefully help other mommies choose fluff.

Second Time's a Charm

It took me a few months (well, maybe six months) to figure out the "perfect" way to keep my cloth diapers organized.  I now have a great system that works for our family.

I keep all of the fluff in Sam's dresser.  When he was younger, and couldn't roll like a baby alligator, this is where his changing pad rested.  When we picked out his furniture I was set on getting a changing table but a salesperson talked me into getting a dresser and placing a changing pad on top instead-I sure am glad I met that man!  This dresser has so much space for his fluff and is useful still once changing baby on a changing table isn't feasible anymore, which was around six months of age for us.

In the long, top drawer I keep (in photo order) FuzziBunz Hemp Inserts, extra micro inserts, micro doublers, Hemp Babies doublers, and Birdseye Cotton Flat Diapers (in natural).
In the next two drawers I keep all of my pre stuffed pocket diapers (an assortment of FuzziBunz Perfect SizeBum Genius 4.0Kawaii, and Rumparooz).

The bottom drawer houses my covers which include Flip and Bummis Super Lite.  (I use my flat diapers tri folded in these).

On top of the dresser I have a Prince Lionheart wipe warmer and I keep their "Warmies" in it.  I keep my FuzziBunz wipes underneath that I spray with a bottle of water-these are amazingly soft and are great at drying his little bum after wiping it.

Next to the wipe warmer I keep three jars filled with Q-tips, cotton balls, and baking soda (to sprinkle in the diaper pail).

I also keep a basket on top filled with my old infant prefolds that are great for cleaning up messes, a spray bottle of water, and a baby jar filled with coconut oil.  I use the coconut oil on Sam's bum for his eczema, diaper rash, and as a barrier cream.  It works great and smells amazing!  Oh, and you can't forget the Jayhawk.  Rock Chalk!

In the side cabinet doors I keep random accessories and yes, I have a "sposie" stash for very rare occasions.

And let's be honest, this is usually what his room looks like with the fluff piled on the floor until I have a chance to stuff the pockets and get everything put away.

Happy Cloth Diapering!

How I Stash My Fluff-Part 1

My daughter had a little friend over playing - and I was trying to keep track of them and take care of my nine month old son.  I thought I was doing a fair job.  Then I looked down at my son - as I was carrying him down the stairs.  He had purple smeared all over his little baby face.  While I was holding him, he had been happily munching on one of his sister's purple crayons - and I hadn't even noticed.  Needless to say, I felt like Mom of the Year.

Right away, I did a finger sweep and got any large pieces out of his mouth.  Then I cleaned up his face.  I didn't really think he'd swallowed much - if any of the crayon.

But later, after I'd nearly forgotten about the incident, Miles filled a diaper for me.  As I was rinsing it, I noticed these pretty little purple patches.  Lots of purple crayon pieces intermixed with the poo.  I laughed.  Apparently he'd eaten more than I thought.  I tossed the diaper into the wash with all the other dirty diapers and it came out without a spot.  Bright white - like always.  The white T-shirt I had been wearing didn't fare as well and I still have a purple stain on the front from his crayon drool.

That crayon was no match for the suedecloth lining of the KaWaii one size.

I am an attorney, as is my husband. We currently live in Berkeley with our two daughters, and are expecting our son this May.

With our first child, I shuddered at the thought of cloth diapering. I had decided it was not for me before really knowing anything about it. Then, one of my closest new mom friends started cloth diapering and learning and sharing more about it. I became somewhat interested, but my husband was adamantly against it, and being a law student married to a law student, we already struggled to keep up with adult sized laundry, let alone that of our new babe. Then, with our second child, things in our lives were even more hectic, my husband was taking the California Bar Exam just 4 days after our second baby was born. He maintained his reservations, and told me that he would not change a cloth diaper. Thus, due to circumstance, it just wasn't an option for us.

Then, however, when our first daughter was about 3 years old and finally potty trained during the day, and our then 19 month old was nowhere near being potty trained, I became frustrated and appalled at how much we were spending on diapers. (I am painfully aware of the waste treatment issues and the fact that it takes 500 years for a disposable diaper to decompose). I found myself buying large boxes of diapers to be used for our larger daughter only at night, and for our toddler day and night. Not only was it costly, but incredibly wasteful and daunting. Afterall, the disposable diapers simply did not hold the amount of liquid we needed them to, regardless of brand, size, absorbency. Every night, at around three or four in the morning I would hear the familiar, "Mama! Come change me, my jammies are wet!" and of course they were, along with all of her sheets and blankets. There had to be another way.

It was then that I decided that I was done buying disposables, especially with another little one on the way. I also keep on top of all of our laundry and the girls', I figured it wouldn't be too daunting to do a load of diapers every other day. So, I decided that I would buy cloth diapers, since I could use them for both girls and their soon to be here little brother. Plus, once my three year old is night trained, I can use the diapers for another one of the kids, and it won't be a waste of money or material.

It was important to me to do my research in advance, afterall, I didn't want to buy a diaper that would be too small for a 3 year old, or too big for a newborn. I got in touch with my friend who had CD'ed her two little ones all along, as well as some other moms online, and gave them my two daughters' sizes, and my criteria, and based on that information placed my order. I had heard the prefolds were one of the least expensive ways to get into CD'ing, so I picked up an Econobum, and my friend sent me some that her girls had outgrown, along with a Bummis cover and a Fuzzibunz pocket diaper. I ordered two Thirsties fab fitteds size large that were on sale for my 3 year old to wear at night in addition to two covers and 4 of the BabyKicks joeybunz hemp inserts, since I had heard these worked well overnight. I also picked up a Flip diaper, to see how that compared to pocket diapers.
With my first order from Kelly's Closet, I received a free KaWaii diaper, an economical pocket diaper, and I loved how well they held up for the price, so I made sure to pick up a couple more in my next order. I also ordered a Happy Heinys and a Knickernappies, upon another mom's recommendation, and a bumGenius, for good measure. For my next order, I received a free Rumparooz, which I anticipated as being the perfect fit for our newborn, since big thighs run in our family, and it didn't fit my girls that well. I've since received another Rumparooz, a camoflage Kawaii, and a cow print Kawaii as gifts for my son's stash (thank goodness for cloth diaper baby registries!), and I ordered a few more Econobums and bumGeniuses for my daughters. I try to take full advantage of the different sales, and keep up on reviews from both friends and blogs.

I started out with All Free & Clear, but after reading detergent reviews, was happily surprised to find that our local Whole Food's carries Planet, so I switched to that. My husband admits that the laundry isn't as bad as he thought it was, I got a laundry hamper and drying rack on sale at Ikea, and we've slowly gotten into a comfortable routine. My older daughter comments about the colors of the diapers, and I point out which ones will be for her soon coming little brother. The picture I've attached is of my first order of diapers and prefolds from a friend, which I've since added to. My stash is definitely a source of pride. I only wish it had worked out for our family sooner!

Cloth Diapering, Third Baby's a Charm

I started cloth diapering over 10 months ago.  My children were about 6 months old and 30 months old when we switched.  We started with prefolds and covers, and we got some hemp for over nights and pockets for my husband/errands.  Within two months, we were using cloth 99% of the time.  And within another two months, I only had one in diapers as my daughter decided to finally potty train (herself).  Life got easy – I had a routine, and things were working great.

Then one day I decided to strip our hemp and prefolds because they were starting to smell.  It took longer than I thought, so I just used two microfiber inserts at night and hoped for the best.  And well, I learned he didn’t even need that.  I had noticed the prefold/hemp combination hadn’t been completely soaked before, but I was afraid to try less.  And having to use two microfiber at night proved to me he didn’t need all that stuffing.  So, I got to try some new options.  I settled on Econobums at night if I was changing, and a bumGenius 4.0 or KaWaii pocket stuffed with an Econobum prefold if my husband had our son that night.  I was actually happy about this.  It meant I got to use the hemp and more pockets during the day.  They are cuter than our covers and are trimmer.  All was going well, and I had a new routine.

And then I ordered some flats.  We are expecting #3 this summer, and I knew these would be great for the baby.  I also thought that would be good for a trimmer option to prefolds for our son.  The first day went fine.  I had to remember to change more often, but it wasn’t a huge deal.  I expected this since I had a few less layers of cotton on him.  Then came the second day – a day I learned my son had changed his habits!  I first put him in a flat with a Snappi.  My plan was to change him about an hour later, just before we went to church.  Within 20 to 30 minutes, there was a puddle!  He had leaked straight through the flat on to the floor.  I thought it was just because I hadn’t used a cover.  So, I snappied another flat on him and put a cover on top.  Less than 45 minutes later, he had leaked.  I thought he might have sat in something (like water from the bath tub since he likes to pour water on the floor).  But, by the time we got to church, it was clear that he had soaked the flat.  I changed him into his hemp pocket, and thought we were through with leaks.  Less than 3 hours later, he was leaking again!  The hemp combination had lasted us at least 4 hours in the past (when we are out and about without a good spot to change him).

On the way home from church, I started thinking.  His night time diaper hadn’t been soaked.  But, he hadn’t drunk too much in the afternoon.  Instead, he drank a bunch that morning.  He was becoming more like his sister – able to drink two sippy cups of milk or water in a short period of time.  This is what had made her a heavy wetter, and now he is following in her footsteps.  So, now I have to rethink all of my diapering again.  I have to “monitor” his drinking and consider that when I diaper him.  On normal days, I can go with one flat pad folded for two to three hours.  I can go with a hemp insert for 3-4 hours.  But, other days I know I need to “double up” on his stuffing.

The challenge can be fun, but sometimes it is just easier to “overstuff” just in case!

Keeping Me On My Toes

Hi, my name is Julie. I'm a cloth diaper addict.

The first step is admitting you have a problem.  The second step (in this case) is stalking DiaperShops.com for the latest coupon codes!

Why am I so addicted to cloth diapers?  They are soft, they are colorful, they are cute, they don't irritate my super sensitive little one's bottoms and they are reusable!  I truly love my FuzziBunz perfect size diapers because of their literally perfect fit, and beautiful bright colors.  My husband is a huge fan of the BumGenius aplix, because even with a wiggly baby, it's easy to diaper up and go.  Furthermore, I can't resist pretty new colors and prints of Rumparooz, Happy Heinys, and GroVia...there simply could not be enough of any of these diapers, and there is always another one to try!

Seriously, we just don't have the finances to buy all the cute cloth diapers I want to get!  We're a military family on a tight budget.  We know the end result of cloth diapers is savings, but purchasing a stash all at one go was never an option.  But, continuing to pay for diapers I'm just going to throw away?  Even less of an option!

I bought one diaper at a time, and wondered how to maximize baby's time in cloth.  I was elated when my friend told me about DiaperShops.com.  I know, this is sounding like the cheesiest of infomercials, but it really has turned our whole approach to building a diaper stash completely around.  Not only can you earn points every time you make a purchase (to earn more free fluff!), but there are coupons...for FREE diapers!

It may not sound like it could amount to that much.  Even I underestimated the savings!  As I wrote this post, I went back to my order status to count up how many free diapers I've received...and I had to stop counting at a dozen!  That is the first 12 reasons I love DiaperShops.com!  It amounts to over $200 of free diapers!

We're expecting our third child in March, and I actually have accumulated such a stash, I'm putting some of it aside to use for the first time on our little boy...even though I could use it now.  The picture shows just a few of the diapers I have earned through points and coupon codes.  I've received Econobum, KaWaii, Rumparooz, Katydids, and FuzziBunz (among others)...and even the cutest Bummis Swimmi diaper!
My favorite part of the order is of course opening the box, but with a little twist.  My husband actually peeks over and I get to show him which diaper I got for free.  The approving smile is priceless.

I could list many reasons for my love of our favorite retailer, and fluff in general, but I think those first 12 reasons are pretty good!  (Who can argue with free cloth diapers?!)  It's time to call it a night.  After all, I need sleep so I can dream about the fluff that's on it's way in the mail right now!

12 Reasons to Love DiaperShops.com

I was looking for a few more diapers in my stash.  I hadn't tried the KaWaii One Size Pocket Diapers - and the price was right.  I ordered four of the suedecloth diapers with aplix closures.

When I got them, I was surprised at the quality of the fabric.  The outer shells were soft and durable.  The luandry tabs were perfectly placed and the two inserts were much nicer than I had expected.  The colors were vibrant and the design of the diaper seemed very smart - overall.

However, in my experience with cloth diapers - some of the best looking diapers can be some of the worst wearing diapers.  I was a little skeptical.  So I washed them.

Again, I was pleasantly surprised.  The outer shells dried - just hanging in my laundry room for about an hour.  By that time, the inserts were ready to be pulled from the dryer.  I was more than ready to try them on my heavy-wetting eight month old son for his nap.

My boy usually soaks through any diaper I put him in at naptime.  For whatever reason, he seems to wet more during his naps than at any other time during the day.  I used only one insert - and the bright red KaWaii One Size Diaper for his nap.  When he woke, I went in - fully expecting a soaked blanket.  To my delight, I found his bedclothes DRY.  When I took the diaper off - the insert was wet, but the suedecloth felt dry against his skin.  That was the best part for me - knowing that my boy was comfortable and didn't have to feel wet when his diaper was soaked.

The fit is excellent.  Snug - without seeming tight or leaving red marks.  And the Aplix closure offers an easy adjustable fit.  The diaper isn't bulky and there aren't any areas where it seems too loose.

I am completely impressed with these diapers.  With cloth diapers - I have often subscribed to the "you get what you pay for" philosophy.  So I wasn't expecting much from these bargain priced diapers.

Thankfully they have exceeded my expectations.  I can't wait to add more of these to my son's diaper collection.

KaWaii One Size Diaper Review

I am relatively new to cloth diapering.  I became interested in using cloth diapers when my son was five months old after seeing that several friends were using them.  My stash started small with one FuzziBunz Perfect Size Medium and 1 Flip Daytime pack.  I fell in love instantly with the diapers and went on to buy FuzziBunz One-Size Pockets, Happy Heinys One-Size Pockets, BumGenius! 4.0 One-Size Pockets, Kissaluvs Size 2 Fitted, and several pre-folds and Thirsties covers.  I also ended up receiving 2 free Kawaii Overnight pockets from Kelly's Closet after purchasing a certain amount from them.

For daytime use my son stayed completely leak-free in his Flips and Prefolds.  He also stayed leak-free for naps with double stuffed FuzziBunz One-Size Pockets or pre-folds and a cover.  It was with overnight use that I was constantly having a problem.  It seemed no matter what I did my son would wake up wet the next morning.  Early on I realized that my son was a heavy wetter so I ended up buying some Thirstie's Hemp Inserts as well as Thirstie's Fab doublers and figured I would try both to see which I liked better.   However even with the addition of the hemp insert or the fab doubler my son was waking up damp.  I even tried triple stuffing and using one microfiber insert, one fab doubler, and one hemp insert and he was STILL damp in the morning.  Why was this happening?  I seriously considered switching back to disposables at night as I was getting incredibly frustrated.  I decided to do some research and I discovered two things:

1)  If the inserts don't lay completely flat in the pocket then it can cause leaks as there is no where for the urine to go if there are bends in the insert.  Basically the urine would just roll around on the PUL fabric until it found an escape route out of the diaper.  No amount of extra inserts would stop this kind of leak if the inserts aren't lying flat.  All I had to do was, once the diapers would stuff, I would stick my hand to the top of the diaper and smooth the inserts out as I moved my hand back out of the diaper.
2)  Tucking the microfleece layer of the pocket back into the diaper if it is sticking out will also cause leaks.  For the longest time I thought that I was supposed to be tucking the microfleece back in or it would cause leaks... turns out it was just the opposite.  So, I started letting the microfleece stick out of the back of the diaper and VOILA!  No more leaks!

Not-tucking the microfleece back into the diaper was the turning point for keeping the diapers leak free.  As soon as I stopped tucking them the leaks stopped completely.

So, by making these adjustments to my nighttime diapering routine my son has been able to stay completely dry all through the night.  Even after sleeping 10 to 13 hours straight!

We will draw one winner randomly with an "Online Number Generator" and will make a post with the winner on Friday, Sept. 3rd. It is the responsibility of the winner to contact us to claim their prize.

Who can participate?
US Residents are welcome!

Important note about the winner:
If we haven't heard from the winner by the closing time of next week's giveaway, we will choose another winner that will be published TOGETHER with next week's winner.

Good luck, and don’t forget to tell all your family and friends about the giveaway! In case that you don't win, what a better person to win than a friend of yours!!
