Newborn Cloth Diapering at Four Weeks

My little boy is now a month old and life is starting to almost seem normal…well, a new kind of normal…okay maybe the word normal is stretching it!  I have been so excited to explore this world of newborn cloth diapering and I can finally start branching out now that his umbilical stump has finally fallen off and he has started to pack on some pounds.

Four Weeks: The little man is now 10 lbs 8 ounces and 22 inches.  Because they are just so adorable and seem so comfy-cozy I am still putting him in the Rumparooz Lil Joeys, being careful to change these more frequently to prevent leaks.  I have unsnapped the umbilical snap-down and the fit is still very good, but the leaks are hit or miss.

After much anticipation I have been able to pull out my BumGenius All-in-One X-Smalls, my Fuzzi Bunz X-Smalls (snap and aplix) and my Happy Heinys Mini One-Size Pockets.  I absolutely love the BG AIO and the Fuzzi Bunz pockets.  The BG’s and FB fit well, are very trim and haven’t leaked at all.  I definitely prefer the aplix with a newborn because I feel like I can get a really custom fit, although the snaps on the FB have worked nicely as well.  My only complaint would be the aplix on the FB (a fairly new feature for FB).  It’s super strong, which normally wouldn’t be a complaint, but there’s something very difficult about fully detaching them from the laundry tabs.  The aplix also seems to be curling a bit.  I would still consider buying more FB with aplix, however, because I love the diaper and relish the ease and fit of aplix.  I will definitely be purchasing a couple more BG AIO and Fuzzi Bunz Perfect Size diapers, sizing up to Smalls to help bridge the gap between newborn and One-Size diapers.

I have always thought Happy Heinys were somewhat boxy by design on my daughter and I have found these Mini pockets to fit the same with my son.  This fit, however, doesn’t seem to affect their performance thus far.  They fit nicely on the legs and because I can overlap the aplix on the waist I can get a good snug fit there as well.  I haven’t had any leaks either.  The nice thing about the Mini Pockets is that the different size options will allow them to grow with the baby.  He is currently on the smallest of three settings which will give us a lot of wiggle room as he grows.

I still have a couple of diapers to test out as my little guy grows.  I bought one or two of several different diapers to try because I just didn’t know which ones I would like and what his body-type would be.  As I have said before my preference is a trim diaper so I don’t plan on breaking out my one-size diapers until about 3-4 months (although at the rate this little one is growing it may be sooner).  Until then I have a couple more “newborn” diapers to test-drive.  I have yet to try the Applecheeks in Size 1, the Tot Bots Tiny Fit and the Thirsties Cover in Size X-Small.  These are all slightly bigger than the others so I have waited a bit to put them on him.

I used the FB with Aplix for 2 1/2 months till it curled so bad I returned them under warranty. I REALLY wanted to like them, and did at first, till the aplix curled so badly I couldn't use them anymore. FB was SUPER nice and replaced them with snaps (at my request). Unfortunately, they are the one FB product I cannot recommend to anyone and I've been using fuzzi bunz (with snaps) for 3 1/2 years and they are still going strong (with replaced elastic)!!!

My son was six wks premature so we had a tough time with cloth. We also used BG AIO, which I loved! And the FB XS although in snaps only. The Bummies wraps in XS were also great with newborn prefolds, super easy and no leaks ever. Just a note that FB Small seems huge on my son still, even though he's pretty much out of the XS. And he's just now in the Thirsties XS at three months old! They are my favorite by far. And can I just say they all look so cute on a teeny butt??

i used econobum covers and flats on my 8# girl for the first 8wks with no problem. by then she was up to 11# and needed the econobum prefolds in the cover so she wouldn't super soak them (but still wasn't leaking). we also used smartipants from day 1 with a great fit and no leaks. so from my experience, while newborn dipes are super cute, i don't think they're really needed.

I really love my Thirsties XS covers. Right about the time dd outgrew them the duo covers started to fit well. I didn't like the duo on a tiny tiny girl. I'm thinking 12ish lbs was about right. We're still in size 1 around 16lbs.

I have been using the thirsties x-small covers with the fitted kissaluvs or prefolds since birth (she is now 5 weeks) and we have yet to have a leak! They work very well.

If you've planning to use FB OS, I don't think you'll need to get PS Small diapers for a transition phase. My OS are much smaller than my PS Smalls (the width between the legs is very narrow, and while you might get a bit of "ballooning" in the back with the elastics tightened, it won't leak. I started using them at 6mos on my 14lb string bean (seriously, no chub on this boy) and never had a problem until about 13mos when he'd soak them overnight. I've stopped using the OS at nights, even triple stuffed, but the PS Mediums have a huge soaker pad, and are my overnight diaper now.

I'm glad to hear you really like your BG AIOs. My son is due in 2 weeks and I can't wait to try mine out. I also bought a happy heiny mini and it does seem to be cut much wider than the other diapers I have. I am also excited to try some fitteds with covers. I bought a wool sbish cover and a sbish fitted to try out before taking the plunge into a bigger sbish stash. I also have some kissaluvs 0 ready to go!

Oh wow, your baby is just now wearing the BG xs?! lol My guy, who's about the same age, grew out of them and was in BG small AIOs at about 8lbs! Amazing how body shapes make the same diapers fit so differently.

We loved flats and size one thirstie duo covers when my son was a newborn. They seemed to be less bulky then prefolds and pockets. All of my pockets are OS so we stuck with flats and covers for the first 2-3mths then went over to BG 3.0's.
Now at 10.5mths we love our BG's, FLIPS, Econobums, FB in Med, and a handful of homemade covers and pockets.
We never actually purchased "newborn" sized diapers. The flats and size one duo covers (which go up to 18lbs) worked great for out son.

I LOVE the tots bots Tiny Fits - I find them way easier to stuff, and you don't have to un-stuff them, because they come apart in the wash. My son was 5 1/2 pounds at birth, and we started using them when he was about 3 weeks old.

Thanks for posting this! Your child is so sweet and a perfect newborn diaper model! :o)
I plan on using Thirsties XS and also Tots Bots right away, so its interesting to me that you consider them too large. Could you take a photo of them on him NOW so I can compare it to a few weeks from now, just for education's sake? I have a newborn coming in 3 weeks!

I have a GroVia aio newborn diaper that I love! My son is 6weeks old and on the smallest setting it is fitting him perfectly. I also have a newborn Bummis Super Whisper Wrap that is fitting him just right. I haven't had any leaks!

Congrats on your new baby! My little guy is 3 weeks old and I'm starting to be able to use more cloth diapers, too (he's about 9lbs). Our favorites so far have been just some mommy-made bamboo prefolds with some mommy-made wool, but now the BG 3.0s/4.0s are fitting better with the NB insert.

Mrs. Haid-I will send in some pics of the Thirsties XS and the Tots Bots. I didn't mean to say they were too big, they were just on the bigger side so I knew I could wait with those and use my newborn diapers while they still fit. My kids also have a way of holding on to their stumps for a while so I definitely wanted to wait until that was healed before I tried the bigger diapers. Congrats on the new baby!

I'm curious, in your initial post you were going to try the Kissaluv fitted - what did you think? I've heard some folks just love them and others can't stand them... what was your take?
